So, they set out to test another treatment option. A much healthier one. And the results were astonishing.

The researchers compared the effectiveness of an internet-based consulting treatment for knee osteoarthritis with that of routine self-management which, in most cases, involved over-the counter painkillers together with arthritis information.

They recruited 146 participants, 105 of whom were eventually included in the analysis. They were all 45 years or older with an average age of 66 and a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis.

They were divided into two groups: one group received a smart phone app that allowed them to connect with a registered therapist who educated them and assigned them daily exercises online; the other group received a knee osteoarthritis information package, including dietary and exercise advice, after which they were left to their own devices with doctor’s visits recommended when needed.

After six weeks of these programs, the online treatment group improved their pain scores by 41%, while the self-management group improved theirs by only 6%.

But that wasn’t the only area where the online treatment group enjoyed greater benefits than the self-management group.

They improved more on a 30-second sit-to-stand test and a Timed Up-and-Go test both of which measured stiffness and knee function.

They also improved more on a series of questionnaires that measured pain, stiffness, and physical function.

These improvements were not just better than those experienced by the self-management group, they were also clinically significant, meaning that they were as good or better than anything one could expect from the best available programs and that they resulted in genuine advances in functioning.

This shows that good online information can beat most other treatment options for arthritis.

They recruited people who suffered from both chronic pain and insomnia and gave them a collection of questionnaires to complete.

– The second measured the severity of their insomnia,
– The third tested their dysfunctional beliefs about sleep,
– The fourth evaluated the level of their anxiety and preoccupation with sleep,
– The fifth tested the extent to which pain interfered with their lives.

All these questionnaires told a consistent story.

The more people in chronic pain worried about their ability to sleep and believed that the pain would prevent them from sleeping well, the worse they slept, and the worse they slept, the more they struggled to cope with their pain.

As such, negative beliefs about the relationship between pain and sleep kick off a vicious cycle in which chronic pain and insomnia exacerbate each other.

The British researchers took it one step further, giving their participants some cognitive behavioral therapy for pain and insomnia. They wanted to find out whether tackling people’s negative beliefs about sleep and pain would break this destructive cycle.

The point of cognitive behavioral therapy is to identify those of your negative beliefs that adversely affect your life and to replace them with new beliefs that will allow you to function better.

After the therapy, the study participants held more positive beliefs about the relationship between sleep and pain than before, slept better, and coped better with their pain.

Home Remedies for Arthritis – The Worst Weather for Arthritis Pain

Many arthritis sufferers that one specific weather condition worsens their pain significantly, to the extent that they can even predict when it is coming.

New research from the University of Manchester now shows they’re right.

In this 18 month study, people report their level of pain directly once a day via a smart phone app.

The app also submit information of the weather conditions that prevail when the participants report their best and worst levels of pain.

The study is currently only halfway, but the scientists decided to report some preliminary findings at the recent British Science Festival in Swansea, partly because it is interesting, and partly because they are still looking for new participants to join the 9000 who have already signed up and downloaded the app.

If you are interested to sign up, the study is called “cloudy with a chance of pain” and is open to all residents of the UK who are over the age of 17.

The preliminary results are based on the inputs of participants from Leeds, Norwich, and London and show that their level of pain improved as the rain decreased from February to April, but that it worsened again in June when the amount of rain increased and the overall numbers of hours of sunshine dropped.

The researchers express the hope that a study that links pain severity to weather conditions can help people to prepare and organize their activities around the times when their pain is likely to be at its worst.

Alternatively, if there is no reason for you to be in Europe during its rainiest months, large parts of the southern hemisphere are dry and sunny from September to May.

Some previous studies have indicated that high barometric pressure and moisture may contribute to arthritis pain but, as Robert H. Shmerling, MD, the faculty editor at Harvard Health, admits after reviewing the available research, the studies are currently by no means consistent. Still, he does say that science clearly shows there is something to it.

Oddly, in a review of the research, scientists at the Arthritis Foundation draw attention to studies that show that air pressure continues to have an effect on the joints of cadavers, with one study showing that air pressure can move the ball of the hip joint by about one third of an inch.

This British study will almost certainly be the biggest of its kind once it is completed, which may add some sorely missed reliable data.

Hopefully the researchers have not interfered with their findings by releasing preliminary results and creating an expectation in participants that rain would worsen their pain.

But know what worsen pain is no help if you can’t cure it.

The scientists examined knee radiographs and pain questionnaires taken at the commencement of the study and several times thereafter, up to 48 months later.

In addition, they asked the participants about the frequency and severity of crepitus at the beginning of the study, and again after 12, 24, and 36 months.

With all this information at hand, the researchers could compare the crepitus scores to the radiographs and pain scores, in order to see whether the crepitus scores were meaningless or if they actually predicted arthritis.

The chance that the subjects would develop symptomatic arthritis increased with the frequency of their crepitus.

This was especially true for those whose radiographs showed osteoarthritis at the beginning of the study, even when they had no pain at all.

This means that you should not wait until the pain starts if you experience frequent cracking or grinding sounds in your knees.

You can ask your doctor to take a radiograph to establish whether or not you have arthritis, and then start treating it immediately, before the pain even kicks in.

Over 60% of participants drastically improved their arthritis in two months. They got even better as they kept using it.

A research team led by the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine recruited 480 people aged 45–75 who had been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis and who had been complaining of knee pain for more than six months.

They divided their participants into three groups: one received electroacupuncture, one received manual acupuncture, and one received sham acupuncture.

Electrodes were attached to the needles in all three groups, although the current was turned on in only the electro-acupuncture group.

With manual acupuncture, the needles were inserted into the correct locations at the correct depths; in sham acupuncture, the needles were placed in the wrong places at the wrong depths.

After eight weeks with three treatments per week, the researchers measured the participants’ pain and function levels on the Numeric Rating Scale and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index function subscale. Only those who improved significantly on both scales were counted as successfully treated cases.

Overall, 60.3% of the electro-acupuncture group, 58.6% of the manual acupuncture group, and 47.3% of the sham acupuncture group reported that their treatments had been successful.

The electro-acupuncture group was 13% better off than the sham treatment group. While it appeared that the manual treatment group had improved, the difference between them and the sham group was not statistically significant.

This means that, at eight weeks, only the electro-acupuncture group had definitively improved.

However, the manual treatment group showed large and statistically significant improvements after 16 and 26 weeks, along with the electro-acupuncture group.

Therefore, acupuncture—especially electro-acupuncture—can improve function and reduce pain for people with knee osteoarthritis.

Arthritis and other inflammatory joint diseases come in different forms, all requiring slightly different treatments.

In addition, because arthritis is a progressive disease, it gets worse the longer it continues. The most effective remedies are those that start the soonest because they can slow the disease down before it really takes hold.

Unfortunately, after sufferers had ignored the first symptoms for a year or two and the doctors have taken months to make a correct diagnosis, the disease is usually already underway.

Scientists from the University of Warwick now think they have a solution in the form of a blood test that can accurately diagnose arthritis at its onset and distinguish various forms of arthritis and joint disease from each other.

At present, the only test that can diagnose osteoarthritis is an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan which is first, not terribly accurate when these diseases are at their onset, and second, quite expensive to perform on every person that complains about symptoms.

Similarly, the only presently available test for rheumatoid arthritis is called an anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibody test, which is also inaccurate at the disease’s onset.

The Warwick team recruited 225 study subjects, some with osteoarthritis, some with rheumatoid arthritis, some with other inflammatory joint diseases, and some with healthy joints. They focused on knee joints specifically and published the results in the journal Arthritis Research and Therapy.

They used mass spectrometry to analyze blood and synovial fluid from their subjects’ knee joints, looking for damaged or modified proteins.

To be more technical, they found that these proteins were damaged by oxidation, nitration, and glycation, which they managed to measure in the fluid they collected as oxidized, nitrated, and glycated amino acids.

The proteins of people with joint diseases were damaged in this way, while those with healthy joints had no such damage.

Furthermore, the exact nature of the damage differed from one joint disease to another, making it easy to distinguish them from each other.

This blood test has a slightly higher sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of these diseases.

Sensitivity is a measurement’s ability to rule out the wrong diseases, and specificity is its ability to rule in the right diseases.

For osteoarthritis in its earliest stage, the blood test had a sensitivity of 92 percent and a specificity of 90 percent, giving it a slight advantage over an MRI scan with its sensitivity of 70 percent and specificity of 90 percent.

For all these reasons, this new blood test is a vast improvement over the existing diagnostic methods and, according to the researchers, it can be available within the next two years.

While they did not find structural differences, they did notice that their arthritic subjects had a lot of inflammation inside their hearts, especially of the walls of their hearts’ ventricles.

On average, the arthritic subjects had 12 percent higher heart inflammation than the non-arthritic subjects, a number that jumped to 30 percent when those with mild arthritis were excluded.

In other words, those with moderate or severe arthritis had 30% more heart inflammation than those without arthritis.

This inflammation, cause with time structural changes in hearts that prevents them from functioning properly.

On the upside, their second study found that those who treated their arthritis had much lower heart inflammation than those who did not treat it or treated it insufficiently.

They recruited 100 newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis patients and 197 healthy subjects. Those with a history of heart disease, kidney disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases were excluded. So were consumers of alcohol and people who consumed less than 800 or more than 4,200 calories per day.

They gave the participants a 168-item questionnaire to record their food intake. They had to say how often they consumed each item during the previous year: never, 2–3 times per month, once a week, 2–4 times per week, 5–6 times per week, or daily.

Based on the portions the subjects reported, the researchers calculated how many grams per day they ate of each food item.

They divided the foods into 32 categories based on their nutrients to identify dietary patterns.

They identified two general patterns: a healthy dietary style and a Western dietary style.

The healthy style included poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, fruit, and vegetables, while the Western style included a lot of red meat, processed meat, and organ meat.

They also investigated their subjects’ weight, height, education, employment, medical history, drug consumption, and so forth to ensure that none of these affected their findings.

Unsurprisingly, they found that those with low adherence to the healthy diet were 2.85 times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis. Those who ate the Western diet were 2.22 times more likely to have this type of arthritis.

They attributed these findings primarily to the inflammation caused by the unhealthy diet.

They stated that previous studies had found that red meat and processed meats caused inflammation, especially the arachidonic acid in red meat. Sugary treats and beverages are also pro-inflammatory.

Furthermore, fruit and vegetables contain lots of minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, all with anti-inflammatory functions. Fish provide plenty of anti-inflammatory omega-3s, and the riboflavin, calcium, and vitamin B12 in dairy are also anti-inflammatory.

A gap in our shoulders through which tendons and blood vessels pass has narrowed over the years, limiting the moving space of the tendons that become active when we reach over our heads.

Together with mapping our past bone development, the scientists used these models to estimate what our bodies will look like 4,000 years from now, finding that the current structural trends and their resulting aches and pains will probably increase.

Hypercitrullination happens when the normal process that regulates the operations of proteins in your body becomes overactive.

The consequence of this hyperactivity is the buildup of something called citrullinated proteins.

Your immune system dislikes this buildup of citrullinated proteins, because it is not a normal biological process.

It accordingly responds by producing antibodies to attack and remove these proteins.

These antibodies cause inflammation that then attacks your gums (in gum disease) and/or your joints (in arthritis.)

This was after they excluded smoking, alcohol use, and other habits known to be contributing factors in the development of this disease.

Researchers asked 38 college-age women with painful menstruation to take either 400mg of cinnamon powder, 400mg of ibuprofen, or a starch powder as a fake treatment.

No one involved in the study knew which substance each participant received.

Researchers monitored the women’s pain severity and duration throughout the day to see which substance worked best.

The cinnamon group experienced less pain than the ibuprofen and fake treatment groups for the first few hours, up to four hours, when there was no longer a difference between them and the ibuprofen group.

Needless to say, the suffering of the fake treatment group continued unabated.

Because 400mg of cinnamon is very little and it causes no side effects, you can keep on taking it several times a day, whereas there’s a limit to how much ibuprofen you can safely consume.

This is a bleak picture, especially the findings regarding non-calcified and mixed plaques. These are the plaques that are the most likely to rupture and block arteries completely, causing heart attacks and strokes.

Bone examination revealed that arthritis-affected joints had only half the boron content of healthy joints.

The synovial fluid that helps carry nutrients to the cartilage and lubricates joints was found to be boron deficient in arthritic joints.

According to Newnham, supplementing with borax can eliminate pain, inflammation, and joint stiffness in about 1 to 3 months.

After 3 months, he suggests reducing the treatment from 3 daily pills to 1 pill a day (each containing 3 mg of borax) as a preventative measure to avoid future arthritis.

Borax is usually sold as agricultural or technical grade at a 99–99.5% pure concentration. The remaining 0.5 % might consist of potassium, sodium, chloride, sulfates, phosphates, calcium, carbonate, and bicarbonate but no toxic or heavy metals.

The British Daily Express recently interviewed a Cuban man who routinely used scorpion venom to ease his terrible arthritis pain.

They found that the venom-injected rats experienced as much improvement in movement and reduction in inflammation as those injected with the arthritis drug.

The Journal of Clinical Toxicology published a similar study in 2014 in which Indian scientists tested the venom of the Indian red scorpion, one of the most lethal scorpions in the world, on similarly induced rat arthritis with similar results.

At this stage, these are the only two studies that back the use of scorpion venom.

At the same time, there are plenty of other studies proving that scorpion venom actually causes inflammation and death.

So why are the results so conflicting?

You see, scorpion venom has so many different chemicals in it and different types have different amounts of each chemical.

A research study conducted by a team from Peking Union Medical College Hospital in China has found promising results with a traditional Chinese herb called Tripterygium wilfordii. In a trial, 207 patients were assigned to one of three groups; the first group received 12.5 mg of prescription drug, methotrexate once a week, the second group received 20 mg of the herb extract and the third group received a combination of both. The patients were tracked for a period of 24 weeks. They were then assessed to check if at least 50 percent reduction in pain and swelling of joints was achieved.

55.1 percent of the patients who took the herb extract and 76.8 percent of those who took a combination of drug and the herb extract showed more than 50% improvement in inflammation. Compare this to only 46.4 percent who got relief from taking only the drug.

The side effects related to the herb extract was also found to be minimal. This inexpensive Chinese herb seems like a potential candidate for treating rheumatoid arthritis safely. Many doctors in China actually recommend this herb extract, available as capsules, for patients older than 50 years.

Apart from its effect on arthritis, the herb is also known to cure pancreatic cancer and other autoimmune diseases. It is, however, believed to lower fertility in men.

The researchers recruited their 156 subjects from the U.S. military health system. All of them were arthritis patients, and they had an average age of 56 years.

The patients were split into two evenly sized groups, one of which received physical therapy and the other received glucocorticoid joint injections.

Before and after the treatment program, the researchers obtained their scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC). This is a standard test used in many of these studies. Higher scores signify worse pain, more disability, and more stiffness than lower scores do, with scores ranging from zero to 240.

Before the program, the two groups scored approximately the same, 108.8 in the glucocorticoid group, and 107.1 in the physical therapy group.

After one year, the glucocorticoid group scored 55.8, whereas the physical therapy group scored 37, showing a clear benefit of physical therapy over the injections.

In addition to WOMAC, the researchers also measured their subjects’ performance on three other tests before and after the program. All three of these tests yielded the same result as WOMAC: physical therapy was more effective than glucocorticoids in limiting pain, stiffness, and disability.

Moreover, a high fiber intake also reduced the amount of pain experienced by people with osteoarthritis and prevented it from worsening.

There are two reasons Fiber is so beneficial for arthritis:

1) It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

2) It helps you lose weight and keep it off.

This indicates that a high fiber diet is not just good for osteoarthritis but all types of arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
