Reduce Risk of ED – ED Risk Increased by 460% from Lacking This

Men who lack this one hormone in a specific way are 4.6 times more likely to suffer ED than those who have plenty of it.

Some swear that supplementing with it is more effective than taking risky prescription medications.

But there is a catch. If you lack this hormone in a different way, it has no effect on ED.

Testosterone has become a marketing word somewhat in the medical world. Doctors are prescribing pills and patches left and right to heal anything from high blood pressure to lack of libido or erectile dysfunction.

But a Chinese study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine put this issue to a scientific test.

Regularly measuring testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in 733 men for four years, the researchers found a weird connection.

Men between 20 and 40 years old had a 20% increased risk of erectile dysfunction if they had low free testosterone (FT). But there was no increased risk if they had low total testosterone (TT), as long as FT was normal.

This is an important difference. You see, 98 – 99% of all testosterone in your body is tied up by glycoprotein sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Meaning, it is not available to be used. Only the 1-2% testosterone that is FREE, can be used by your body.

The total amount of testosterone doesn’t make any difference, therefore, since it’s not available to be used. Taking prescription testosterone may not do you any good, because it will mostly be tied up by SHBG.

In fact, the researchers found the biggest increased risk of erectile dysfunction among young men who had a low level of FT and a high level of SHBG. Those men were 4.6 times more likely to suffer ED than men with high FT and low SHBG.

Now even more interesting was that in men over 40, the level of TT, FT, and SHBG had no impact on their risk of erectile dysfunction.

So what is it then that causes erectile dysfunction in men over 40?

You see, just like other muscles in the body become stiffer and less flexible with age, the muscles around the genitals tense up blocking blood flow into the penis.

Sexual function can be so easily derailed by a wide range of serious and non-serious conditions elsewhere in your body.

A new study in the journal Andrology has now revealed a fundamental cause of ED.

And it starts in your gums, of all places.

Periodontitis is the sixth most common disease in the world. This inflammatory infection of your gums is caused by bacteria that live and accumulate on your teeth and gums.

Bacterial plaques accumulate on your teeth and spread towards their roots. This causes the gums to pull away from your teeth and allows bacteria to accumulate in the holes that consequently form between your teeth and gums.

Your immune system tries to fight these bacteria with inflammation, which damages the gums even further. Eventually, the gums and the bones that support the teeth completely dissolve, causing the teeth to fall out.

Having missing teeth is already a self-esteem problem; to make things worse, consider the ED that the French and Canadian authors of the new study believe may result from periodontitis.

They noticed that previous studies had found a relationship between periodontitis and ED. They conducted a review of the literature to determine how common this finding is.

They identified 19 relevant studies; the smallest had 53 subjects and the largest had 197,136. They were all performed on adults, with an average age of around 41 years.

Almost all of the studies found a significant link between periodontitis and ED, with the most severe cases of periodontitis also having the most severe cases of ED.

As one would expect, age was one of the most common factors the two conditions shared, with elderly people being the most likely to suffer from both periodontitis and ED.

Tobacco use and systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes were also common in people with both conditions, as were obesity and medications that reduce saliva production.

Some of the studies also examined the relationship between periodontitis and sexual hormones, with lower testosterone levels found in people with periodontitis in two of the three relevant studies.

So how can a condition in your mouth affect your sexual health?

Most of the researchers speculated that the high levels of inflammation in the mouth that result from the fight against the bacteria become systemic. In other words, inflammatory substances spread from your mouth through your bloodstream to your entire body, including the penis.

Inflammation damages the inner linings of blood vessels. This causes endothelial dysfunction, which many previous studies have proven to play a role in both heart disease and ED when blood vessels in the penis are affected.

Systemic inflammation also causes oxidative stress and reduces nitric oxide levels in blood vessels, which further reduces blood vessel function.

In a small research study, 67% of men had their ED cured as a “side effect” of a simple, low-risk surgery.

The weird thing is, the surgery took place nowhere close to the genitals. In fact, it was done on a small gland in the throat.

Although there has been no proof until now, a connection between hyperparathyroidism (overactive parathyroid gland) and erectile dysfunction has been speculated by many doctors.

The researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, wanted to put this theory to the test.

They analyzed data from 160 men who underwent parathyroidectomy (a surgery where one or more of the parathyroid glands is removed). Every patient completed a list of “yes or no” questionnaires before surgery and again six months after surgery.

Twenty-one men reported erectile dysfunction before the surgery. Two were using erectile dysfunction medications.

Six months after the surgery, only seven men (one-third) still suffered ED. And the two men who were taking medications didn’t need them anymore.

This was, of course, a very small study. Much more research is needed to get any reliable data. But you may want to have your doctor check your thyroid activity if you experience erectile dysfunction.

Most men think it’s a complicated task to overcome ED and even that it’s incurable.

Many try strong medications or hormonal therapies with horrendous side effects.

It may therefore come as a surprise to you how simple and effective the method is that was proven in a new study published in JAMA Network Open.

It has no side effects other than lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improved blood sugar levels, and other health markers. Plus, of course, drastically increased stamina.

ED and cardiovascular disease share many of the same risk factors, namely, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, a lack of exercise, sedentary habits, obesity, and smoking.

In fact, the authors of the new study point to some previous studies that show that ED can be used to predict future cases of cardiovascular disease.

We already know that healthy dieting is one of the most effective recommendations against cardiovascular disease, so the researchers wondered whether it worked for ED too. After all, it is difficult to motivate men to adopt a healthy diet to address some potential future heart disease, but if you tell them to do so to prevent or treat ED, they might just be motivated enough.

They obtained their data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which ran between 1998 and 2014. The subjects were 21,469 male health professionals who were between ages 40 and 75 in 1998 and who did not have ED, diabetes, or heart disease at the beginning of the study.

They were given food frequency questionnaires every four years to establish their food and nutrient intake. The authors of this study then used a Mediterranean diet score and the Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010 score to rank them according to the health of their diets.

The subjects were also given questionnaires every four years to assess their levels of ED.

During the follow-up period, there were 968 ED cases among men younger than 60, 3,703 cases among men aged between 60 and 70, and 4,793 cases among men aged 70 and older.

For men younger than 60, those with the highest Mediterranean diet scores were 22% less likely to develop ED than men with the lowest Mediterranean diet scores.

For the men between ages 60 and 70, the highest Mediterranean diet score cut down their risk of ED by 18%, and for those over 70, by 7%.

The Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010 also cut ED risk, especially for men below 60, where it reduced their risk by 22%.

These two diets are relatively similar.

The Mediterranean diet includes plenty of whole grains, legumes, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Its intake of red meat, poultry, dairy products, and eggs is relatively low, while refined grains are almost completely excluded.

The Alternative Healthy Eating Index 2010 rewards you for eating healthy foods, which it defines as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, fish, and polyunsaturated fats, while subtracting points for eating unhealthy foods, which it identifies as refined grains, sugar-sweetened beverages, red and processed meat, trans fat, and sodium.

To put it bluntly, penile fractures happen when the penis is shoved into something hard, causing it to break.

During both missionary and doggy styles, it is possible for the penis to slip out and be shoved into the bed, table, chair, or wherever you happen to be.

Doggy style poses the extra risk that you can aim poorly and shove the penis into the woman’s pelvic bone.

The treated group also showed an improvement in urinary function and continence, with no cases of severe or moderate symptoms remaining after the 10 years.

Low testosterone tends to cause ED, while both high and low prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, are common in ED sufferers too.

There were clear differences between the psychotic and nonpsychotic participants, with the former having higher levels of ED, lower levels of testosterone, and higher levels of prolactin than the latter.

When the researchers observed them for a while, they noticed that those whose psychosis went untreated developed even higher levels of ED and prolactin than those who had had a first episode only.

But a study just presented at the European Association of Urology Congress reveals that doing it a lot will destroy your love life and cause ED.

Digital technology has caused an explosion in the easy accessibility, affordability, and anonymity of porn, which makes it all the more important to discover whether porn consumption and ED are related in any way.

Researchers from Belgium, Denmark, and the UK published an anonymous online questionnaire that was mostly advertised to men in Belgium and Denmark.

The study deliberately recruited men who had had sex in the past four weeks so they could compare masturbation with “normal” sex.

Approximately 28.4 percent of the participants were single and 1.3 percent were divorced or widowed; 5.7 percent were in a new relationship and the remaining 65 percent were either in long-term relationships or married.

Being an online survey, it is unsurprising that the majority of participants were young: around 38 percent were between ages 18 and 25 and a small minority were over age 45 (10.4 percent); 29 percent were between 26 and 35, and 22.5 percent between 36 and 45.

On average, the men watched 70 minutes of porn per week, with some watching hardly at all, and others watching a spectacular 26.25 hours. 2.2 percent of them reported watching more than seven hours per week.

While the majority watched between five and 15 minutes at a time, 3.1 percent watched for more than an hour per session.

The findings were alarming.

Predictably, the occurrence of ED increased with the amount of porn consumed.

Sadly, 23 percent of men below age 35 reported some level of ED when trying to have sex with a partner. In fact, only 65 percent of the men reported feeling more satisfied after sex with a partner compared with how they feel after watching porn.

Why is this the case? The answers may lie somewhere in the findings, too.

First, 20 percent of the participants reported having to watch more extreme porn to get the same level of arousal as they did before. Second, 90 percent of the men reported fast-forwarding past the slow bits to get to the most arousing scenes.

The authors speculated that their participants’ ED while having sex with a partner resulted precisely from their lack of arousal during sex that is not as extreme or with partners that cannot keep up with that endless process of becoming more and more stimulating.

In fact, if this study had included men who had basically given up on sex, rather than those who had had sex in the past four weeks, they would probably have found a substantially higher prevalence of ED for the same reason.

They recruited 220 volunteers who visited their hospitals for a TRUS-guided prostate biopsy. This is the test that is done to find out whether you have cancer if the doctor thinks there is a low or moderate chance that you have it.


The men completed questionnaires before the biopsy to report their level of erectile function. They were asked to complete those same questionnaires several times after the procedure: after 1 week, after four weeks, and after 12 weeks.

Most men reported worsened ED one week after the biopsy than before the operation. However, it did get better after four weeks and by the 12th week most men had regained the level of erection strength they had before.


Researchers speculated that some temporary nerve damage may occur during the biopsy, that hematomas could be responsible, and that the type of local anesthetic used can contribute. A hematoma is a solid swelling of clotted blood within body tissue, which may well be present for a few weeks after a biopsy. The procedure puts a needle into sensitive tissue, after all.

However, the ED may also be somewhat psychological. Indeed, the fear of having a needle put in such a delicate organ would cause most of us to go soft for a while.

Previous studies have shown that a majority of men report great fear of this procedure. And, ED is worse after the first biopsy than if men had undergone one in the past.


Any procedure like this does, of course, have a risk of infection and other side effects. If your risk of cancer is very low, you may want to talk to your doctor about if the procedure is absolutely needed.

Academics at the University of Toledo have been battling to develop a remedy for a type of ED that does not respond to traditional medication.

These drugs work for some men with ED, but there is a common health condition that causes a type of ED that does not respond to these drugs. The number of couples that hope for a new remedy is increasing every day as the condition that causes it becomes more widespread.

Men with diabetes have a terribly difficult task to get and keep their erection throughout sexual intercourse. In a 2002 Harvard study with 31,027 males between 53 and 90, those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes were found to have a much higher rate of erectile dysfunction than those without diabetes.

In the last ten years, many academic papers have been published to examine the link between diabetes and ED. Researchers found that diabetics lacked some proteins and other substances that were required for an erection, but they just could not explain why this was the case in diabetics and not in non-diabetics.

Today, the reason for this problem is better understood than ever because of new research at the University of Toledo.

To understand why type 2 diabetes causes ED, you must remember that diabetes is a condition in which your body develops resistance to the hormones insulin and leptin.

Insulin is the hormone that removes glucose from the blood stream so that the rest of the body can use it as energy, while leptin’s main functions are to regulate the sensation of hunger and the storage of fat. If your body is resistant to both, as is the case in type 2 diabetics, it results in an excess of glucose in the bloodstream and the storage of fat that should either be burned as energy or excreted.

The connection between type 2 diabetes and ED is directly related to this resistance to insulin and leptin.

One of the chief mechanisms behind an erection works as follows:

1. Insulin and leptin stimulate proopio-melanocortin cells in the brain.

2. When stimulated, these proopio-melanocortin cells make a protein called melanocortin.

3. Melanocortins stimulate a nerve in the prostate that makes a healthy erection possible.

Accordingly, the ability to achieve and maintain an erection starts with the two hormones to which type 2 diabetics’ bodies are resistant. Their bodies are not properly responsive to insulin and leptin, and as a result, fail to produce the required proteins and nerve stimulation required for an erection.

This also explains why men with type 1 diabetes struggle with ED. Type 1 diabetics are not resistant to insulin. Instead, they completely lack insulin because their immune systems destroy the cells that release it. At this stage the traditional medical system has no solution. The most obvious route would be to increase melanocortin proteins artificially by suppressing the enzymes that absorb the few available ones. Since this increases blood pressure and heart rate, however, it is not really an option. Replacing ED with cardiovascular disease solves nothing.

It’s old news that smoking causes erectile dysfunction (ED). So the advice doctors give to men suffering ED is to stop smoking.

Simple, right?

Well not quite, because a new study published in Translational Andrology and Urology reveals just how long men have to stop smoking until their love life is back on track.

And what they can do to speed things up.

The researchers obtained 40 eight-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats and divided them into four groups. Ten were exposed to room air only and served as the control group.

The remaining 30 received the same amount of smoke as passive smokers do for 12 weeks after which they were divided into the three remaining groups:

– a smoking group of 10 that immediately underwent ED testing,
– 10 that were first exposed to room air for four weeks before ED testing, and
– 10 that received room air for eight weeks before the ED testing.

They evaluated the rats’ ED by testing their intracavernous pressure (the pressure in the spongy tissue of the penis) and their mean arterial pressure (their blood pressure). For ideal sexual function, the former should be high, while the latter should be low.

The intracavernous pressure was lower, the arterial pressure was higher, and the ratio between the two was lower in the smoking group than in the groups that received only room air or room air for eight weeks after smoking cessation.

This indicates that eight weeks of room air after 12 weeks of smoking can undo much of the damage of the smoking. Four weeks of clean air is not quite enough but is preferable to continuing smoking.

So how long do you need to stop smoking before seeing this huge benefit, which is almost comparable to people who have never smoked?

If this rat study translates directly to humans, a week in a rat’s life corresponds to approximately 26.6 weeks of a human lifespan, on the assumption that a long life expectancy for a rat is three years and for a human is 80 years.

In other words, if you smoked for six years, you might need to stop smoking for at least four years to reset your sex life.

Of the participants, 38.4% reported no erectile difficulties during condom use, 13.8% reported ED while putting it on, 15.7% reported ED during penile-vaginal intercourse, and 32.2% reported ED during both condom application and penile-vaginal intercourse.

Incredibly, this means that 61.7 percent of men report some erectile problems during condom use, with 47.9 per cent experiencing such problems during intercourse.

The authors also asked the men about sex without a condom. This is where it becomes interesting. The 47.9 percent who experienced ED during intercourse were substantially more likely to have ED while having sex without a condom, too. In other words, it’s not the condom’s fault!

It is possible that men blame condoms because they want to avoid recognizing the dismaying possibility that they have ED. This is not only a health risk, but also a psychological issue that may lead them to put the kind of performance pressure on themselves that will almost certainly aggravate their ED during sex with and without a condom. Think of it this way: if you don’t admit it, then you cannot tackle it and your ED will continue indefinitely.

It is also worth mentioning that grabbing at Viagra or any other PDE5 inhibitor is not the answer to ED during condom use. The Journal of Sexual Medicine published another study in 2009 that concluded that men who used PDE5 inhibitors were three times more likely to report erection loss during sex while using a condom. So if you use a condom, you will have to deal with the real causes of the ED, rather than simply drawing on the strongest drug you can find.

The conclusion? Men who consume 85-170 mg of caffeine per day are 42 percent less likely to have ED, while those who consume 171-303 mg of it are 39 percent less likely to have erectile problems. This is the equivalent of two to three cups of coffee per day.

This conclusion holds only for overweight, obese, and hypertensive men; however, the effects of diabetes on ED are too strong for caffeine to counteract.

The researchers did not investigate any other high-risk groups, such as those on certain types of medication or those who are advancing in age, so if you fall in those groups, you may have to try this for yourself.

If you don’t like coffee, you might want to try black tea, green tea, or other teas and drinks high in caffeine. Just make very sure that your drink of choice does not have tons of added sugar or fructose corn syrup, otherwise diabetes and cardiovascular disease will soon replace ED at the top of your list of health concerns.
