But even though the researchers expected the groups treated with ginkgo biloba and magnetic water to improve, they were stunned when they noticed the size of the effect.

 

The pancreatic beta cells in these two groups started increasing in mass and in their ability to produce insulin. The ginkgo-biloba-treated rats, especially, displayed such an improvement in pancreatic beta-cell function that their pancreatic beta cells almost resembled the cells of the rats without diabetes

Both the treatments also reduced oxidative stress and oxidative damage caused by diabetes to pancreatic cells.

36 of the radical dieters lost 15 Kg (66 pounds) or more, a feat achieved by no one in the comparison group. This should not be surprising, as 850 daily calories are approximately half of a general daily recommended intake.

 

On average, the dieters lost 10 Kg (22 pounds) and the non-dieters lost only one (2.2 pounds).

 

Amazing 46% of the dieters achieved complete remission from their diabetes, while only 4% of the non-dieters did.

 

The effectiveness on their diabetes depended on the amount of weight lost.

 

Remission was achieved by:

 

  1. 7% of those who lost from 0-5 kgs,
  2. 34% of those who lost from 5-10 kgs,
  3. 57% of those who lost from 10-15 kgs, and
  4. 86% of those who lost 15kgs and more.

  1. Unsteadiness in the dark and on uneven surfaces. Peripheral neuropathy makes it harder for diabetics to maintain their postures and to walk evenly when their legs are affected.

Scientist identified 81 adults in their early 20s with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. All of the subjects were from low socio-economic backgrounds, and all were English or Spanish speakers from Los Angeles County.

 

The researchers divided the subjects into two groups:

 

– One to receive an occupational therapy program
– The other to receive general educational material

 

The occupational therapy program they tested was called Resilient, Empowered, Active Living with Diabetes (or REAL Diabetes, for short).

 

It consisted of a manual with seven activity-focused chapters: (1) assessment and goal-setting, (2) living with diabetes, (3) access and advocacy, (4) activity and health, (5) social support, (6) emotions and well-being, and (7) long-term health.

 

The contents of the chapters were very practical and focused on specific steps towards behavior change.

 

An occupational therapist worked through one chapter with the subjects biweekly to make the process interactive.

 

The general educational group received standardized educational material together with a biweekly phone call.

 

The researchers, who did not know which participants received which program, were responsible for assessing the subjects hemoglobin A1c levels (their average level of blood sugar over the past two to three months), their diabetes self-care, their diabetes-related quality of life, their diabetes distress, their depressive symptoms, and their life satisfaction.

 

All subjects were tested at the beginning of the study and again after six months to check whether there was an improvement.

 

After six months, the REAL Diabetes program group showed a significant more improvement in hemoglobin A1c, in diabetes-related quality of life, and in habit strength for self-monitoring blood glucose.

 

The fact that both programs included the same amount of human interaction suggests that human interaction was not the reason for the effectiveness of the REAL Diabetes program.

 

The authors speculated that the REAL program’s success was due to its ability to build healthy goals and habits in the participants.

 

This shows that given the right information and tools, people can move mountains.

Also, compared to non-breastfeeders, those who breastfed for more than six months had a 47.5% smaller chance of dodging the diabetes bullet.

Interestingly, past studies have also concluded that breastfeeding can prevent your kids from developing diabetes.

 

For example, in a 2014 article in the journal Jornal de Pediatria, scientists reviewed 21 relevant studies, nine on type 1 diabetes and 12 on type 2 diabetes.

 

The majority of the studies concluded that longer breastfeeding conferred a lower risk of both types of diabetes.

Though their findings were predictable, the extent of them was surprising:

 

  1. Compared to people with normal glucose control, for every one fewer member in their social network, there was an associated increase in the odds of a prior type 2 diabetes diagnosis: 5% higher for men and 8% higher for women.

 

  1. Compared to people with normal glucose control, for every one fewer member in their social network, there was an associated increase in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes: 10% higher for men and 12% higher for women.

 

  1. For men only, living alone carried 94% higher odds of a prior diagnosis, 84% higher odds of a new diagnosis, and 59% higher odds of prediabetes.

 

  1. In men, social isolation increased their odds of a prior diagnosis by 42%.

 

  1. In women, social isolation increased their odds of a prior diagnosis by 112%, and their odds of prediabetes by 60%.

 

This is by far the most detailed study on the relationship between social characteristics and type 2 diabetes. Previous studies only looked at isolated parts of their participant’s social networks and habits.

This Commonplace Food Can Fight Diabetes

 

Scientists have known for some time that whole grains seem to prevent type 2 diabetes, but they don’t understand exactly why yet.

 

But a new study led by Finnish researchers published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition adds more to this debate by looking at the effects of whole grains on consumers.

 

Researchers asked 15 volunteers to eat whole grain rye bread or wheat bread supplemented with rye fiber for four weeks. Next, they had to eat low-fiber wheat bread for four weeks.

 

This involved adding 6 to 10 slices of bread to their diet each day but still carrying on with eating their regular foods.

 

Testing at the end of both periods revealed lower blood serotonin levels after the whole grain period than after the low fiber one.

 

But just to be sure they weren’t missing anything, the authors tested this diet out on mice too. After nine weeks on rye or wheat bran, they got the same results. There was less blood serotonin after eating whole grains.

 

Now, in case you were wondering, this lower serotonin level is not going to make anyone depressed. It’s a neurotransmitter that explains why people taking ecstasy think they love everybody, and why SSRI antidepressants work so well.

 

In the brain it makes us happy, but in the gut, serotonin is produced when your body needs to clear everything out sharpish. These two do their jobs completely independently, and a drop in one doesn’t affect the other.

The total cholesterol of the olive oil group was higher than that of the standard diet group. This was, however, almost entirely due to a rise in HDL (healthy) cholesterol.

 

The butter group, on the other hand, experienced a large rise in body weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol and a moderate rise in the level of insulin in their blood, suggesting that they were slowly becoming resistant to insulin, a main characteristic of diabetes.

– and another group that received two capsules of 186 mg of green coffee bean extract every day for a period of eight weeks.

When they compared the groups after the eight weeks, they found that the green coffee extract consumers had lower fasting blood glucose, more sensitive responses to insulin, and lower systolic blood pressure.

According to a recent study, published in the Naunyn-Schmedeberg’s Archives of Pharmacology, a specific type of tea not only helps people to lose weight, but it can also drastically assist in improving type 2 diabetes.

Researchers from the Keimyung University School of Medicine conducted the study to find out whether green tea was able to help people lose weight, as well as regulate the glucose levels of type-2 diabetes.

 

The results revealed specific ingredients within green tea, called gallated catechins, that worked to inhibit the glucose uptake in the intestines.

 

The study itself began with the presumption that people could ingest enough of the gallated catechins to lower the blood glucose levels within the body from one cup of green tea, a quantity that could be consumed daily.

 

But it turns out that this isn’t necessarily so.

 

You see, as helpful as gallated catechins are when in the gut, it increases insulin resistance when entering the bloodstream, which is very bad for diabetic or obese patients.

 

To conduct the study, the researchers fed both diabetic and healthy mice a high-fat diet and then supplemented this with extracts of green tea.

 

As a preventative measure for the potentially harmful effect of gallated catechins, they bound the gallated catechins with polyethylene glycol, a non-toxic resin, so that the former wouldn’t leak into the bloodstream.

 

The results were quite clear: the mice that were fed high doses green tea extract with the polyethylene glycol addition not only lost weight, but also experienced a great reduction in glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.

 

The mice, however, who only received the extract without polyethylene glycol reaped almost no benefits from the green tea.

 

As long as the green tea extract is combined with polyethylene glycol, drinking a couple of cups of green tea should provide enough gallated catechins to drastically inhibit glucose uptake in the gut and therefore improve both cases of obesity and type-2 diabetes.

 

The effects of drinking green tea (with polyethylene glycol) were the same as taking two types of medications that are recommended to non-insulin dependent diabetics to control their condition.

They found 25 sufficiently rigorous studies with 2,932 participants altogether. The participants with type 2 diabetes had an average age of 58, compared with that of those without diabetes whose average age was 56.

 

Most of the studies concluded that people with type 2 diabetes had lower heart rate variability than those without diabetes did.

 

The researchers could even offer an educated guess on the cause of the type 2 diabetes in participants as a lack of heart rate variability.

 

Your heart rate is controlled by your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, two parts of your autonomic nervous system.

 

Generally speaking, your sympathetic nervous system promotes the release of the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine to speed up your heart rate, while your parasympathetic nervous system stimulates the release of the hormone acetylcholine to slow it down.

 

According to the new study, both the sympathetic and parasympathetic activity in participants with type 2 diabetics decline, most probably because diabetes damages the nerves that lead to your heart.

 

This impairs your body’s ability to speed up and slow down your heart as needed, putting you at risk of heart failure.

 

This is, according to these scientists, one of the reasons people with type 2 diabetes have a greater risk of heart failure than the rest of the population.

If we believe that we can, then we are more likely to sustain a course of behavior that leads us to our goals even through difficulties; if we believe that we cannot, then any obstacle can throw us off our required course of behavior and lead us to fail at our goals.

 

Those subjects whose depression levels declined were the most likely to experience an improvement in their levels of self-efficacy and in their adherence to their diabetes management program.

 

Those whose depression worsened experienced a decline in self-efficacy and in their ability to stick to the diabetes management program.

 

The finding regarding social and emotional support was confusing, as an improvement in those seemed to improve only their level of self-efficacy and not their adherence to the program and only at six months, not at 12 months.

 

Therefore, severely depressed people struggle more than the rest to manage their diabetes well and those who receive little social and emotional support may not feel like they are capable of maintaining self-management programs.

 

This is important as scientists have found that people with type 2 diabetes are more vulnerable to depression.

The study published in the journal Obesity recruited 21 overweight/obese people with pre-diabetes and 11 people who were metabolically healthy with whom to compare the former group against.

 

The scientists tested three breakfasts:

 

  • one without red raspberries,
  • one with one cup of red raspberries,
  • one with 2 cups of it.

 

Aside from these, the three breakfasts contained the same amount of calories and the same macronutrients, high carbohydrate and moderate fat.

 

The subjects were rotated so by the end of the study, each had eaten all three of the breakfasts.

 

Results: the more red raspberries were eaten with breakfast, the lower the insulin and blood glucose levels found in their subjects.

 

On one and two cups of red raspberries, it was found that their average insulin levels just two hours after breakfast were lower when compared with those who ate no raspberries at all.

 

On two cups of red raspberries, their peak insulin, peak glucose, and glucose average levels two hours after breakfast were lower than their peers who did not eat raspberries for breakfast.

They decided to test it on children and adolescents, as this is the population that was increasingly targeted by these drugs to “correct” behavior disorders, like ADHD.

 

The study was published in JAMA Psychiatry.

 

They analyzed 144 youths from the St. Louis-area who had been prescribed antipsychotics.

 

At the beginning of the study, after six weeks of antipsychotic use, and after 12 weeks at the end of the study, they used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans to test the kids’ total body fat.

 

They also used MRI scans to test their subcutaneous and visceral fat, which is the fat below the skin and around the organs in the abdomen.

 

Lastly, they tested the kid’s sensitivity to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that is used for the removal of sugar from the blood stream, and a low sensitivity to it causes high blood sugar levels and the possibility of having the risk of diabetes.

 

At the beginning of the study, 30% of the youths were overweight or obese, which is the same percentage as that of the general population.

 

After 12 only weeks of antipsychotic treatment, this percentage rose to 46.5%.

 

When they broke down the causes of the weight gain, they found that half of the new weight was fat, while the other half was water.

 

The children and teens also became less sensitive to insulin, putting them at risk of diabetes.

 

Stimulants, like Ritalin, made no difference to the amount of fat gained and the amount of insulin sensitivity lost.

But according to a study that has just appeared in the Annals of Internal Medicine, there is a particular group of people that are especially hard hit.

 

In fact, if you belong to this group of people, you’re 80 percent more likely to be hospitalized than other diabetics.

 

The authors were interested in the general health burden of people with young-onset diabetes (YOD), diabetes that is diagnosed before age 40.

 

They expected to find hospitalizations for cardiovascular disease and infections, which would be similar to the outcomes for people whose diabetes kick in only later in life.

 

They obtained the medical records of almost 445,000 type-2 diabetes patients in Hong Kong who were observed between 2000 and 2014.

 

They found that, by specific ages, people with YOD experienced more days of hospitalization than people with usual-onset diabetes (UOD) did, showing that it posed a larger health risk.

 

Compared with those that had UOD, those with YOD were 80 percent more likely to be hospitalized with any cause, 6.7 times more like to have renal problems, 3.7 times more likely to have diabetes itself, 2.1 times more likely to have cardiovascular problems, and 70 percent more likely to have infections.

Fructose in both its natural form (fruit) and its excessively concentrated form (high fructose corn syrup) have recently received the reputation of being fattening.

However, during a study in which they were trying to prove this, researchers reached a surprising conclusion.

 

They found a food type that posed an even larger diabetes risk.

 

In fact, the surprising culprit is often found in numerous kitchens belonging to health-conscious people’s and is sold as a healthy food option by many restaurants.

 

Of fructose, soybean oil, and coconut oil, most people believe that fructose is the most fattening, followed by coconut oil, followed by soybean oil.

 

A logical assumption, since fructose is sugar, coconut oil is a saturated fat (the vegan equivalent of a cup of cream), and soybean oil is a healthy polyunsaturated fat.

 

If asked this question, a large section of the academic community would have answered that both the oils were more fattening than the fructose, as it has long been understood that fat contains almost twice as many calories per gram, when compared to carbohydrates.

 

Thus, from most to least fattening, they would have predicted coconut oil, then soybean oil, then fructose.

 

But what no one could have predicted the discovery a new study just made.

 

Academics at the University of California Riverside wanted to prove that coconut oil caused more weight gain than soybean oil. They fed some mice a diet that contained 40% fat, which is approximately the amount of fat the average American diet contains.

 

The first group of mice received their 40% of fat in the form of soybean oil, and the second received theirs via coconut oil.

 

Since the researchers also wanted to compare the weight gain of the high soybean oil and high coconut oil eaters against the weight gain of high fructose eaters, they stuffed some of the mice with an equivalent amount of fructose that would be consumed by the average American.

 

This is what they found:

 

  • The soybean oil eaters gained the most weight. They gained approximately 25% more weight than the coconut oil-eating mice and 9% more than the fructose-eating mice.
  • The fructose eaters gained the second highest amount of weight. They gained 12% more than the coconut oil-eating mice.
  • The coconut oil-eating mice put on the least weight.

 

However, these weren’t the worst findings. Here are more findings:

 

  • Compared to the coconut oil eaters, soybean oil eaters suffered higher levels of insulin resistance and had a fatty liver with signs of liver injury. These are all characteristics of type 2 diabetes.
  • Compared to the oil eaters, the fructose eaters suffered higher levels of kidney damage and had prolapsed rectums, a symptom of inflammatory bowel disease.

 

In other words, if you want to avoid inflammatory bowel disease, cut all fructose that is not from a fruit out of your diet, and if you want diabetes to pass you by, exclude soybean oil.

Unfortunately, this is not as easy as it sounds.

 

When researchers in the 1960s concluded that animal fats were unhealthy, food manufacturers switched to vegetable oils when making everything from margarine, to potato chips, and salad dressings.

 

Unsurprisingly, they picked one of the cheapest vegetable oils available for this purpose, which happened to be soybean oil.

 

As a result, almost all pre-made and packaged foods contain soybean oil, a factor that obviously explains why type 2 diabetes is such a massive and increasingly widespread problem today.

 

In fact, our food selection is further complicated by the fact that scientists are still unsure as to which oil they should recommend.

 

The authors of the above study specifically warned that they were not recommending saturated fat (like coconut oil) above polyunsaturated fat (like soybean oil), as they had not studied the cardiovascular effects of either.

 

So, for now, the best approach would be to reduce your intake of soybean oil, since you know it is a diabetes risk. I personally would also recommend replacing it with olive oil and coconut oil.
