Researchers from the University of South Australia and Deakin University set out to examine whether obesity affects the plasticity of brains by examining the brains of 14 obese and 16 normal-weight subjects.

All participants were between ages 18 and 60.

The researchers applied pulses of electrical stimulation to their subjects’ brains, specifically to the part of the brain called the motor cortex. This is where intentional movements are planned, directed, and executed.

They wanted to see how strongly the brains of their subjects responded to this electrical stimulation, which they used as an indicator of neural plasticity.

The brains of the healthy-weight group reacted correctly, with a healthy level of neural activity, while the brains of the obese subjects reacted much less.

From this, they concluded that the brains of the obese subjects were unable to react sufficiently to stimuli to grow, learn, and change.

This means that it is important to lose weight if you want your brain to age healthily, to recover from stroke and injury, and to compensate for small areas of reduced function that inevitably occur with age.

The real breakthrough of this study, however, is that it proves that dementia is not just caused by our genetics and there is something we can do about it.

The Research

The research was done on women who took part in the Prospective Population Study of Women in Gothenbury. In the 1960s, 1,500 women in the age group 38-60 were studied. The women were not only put through various examinations, but their lifestyle was also analyzed.

After a gap of 32 years, a follow-up study revealed that 161 of these women, with average age of 75 years, now had dementia. The findings also revealed something peculiar – that women who had more fat around the waist than the buttocks or hips were two times more likely to contract dementia in old age. However, this study didn’t find any correlation between BMI (Body Mass Index) and dementia.

Deborah Gustafson, a key researcher of this study, pointed that unlike other similar studies in which a relation between BMI and dementia was found, no direct link between the two were noted in this study. She added that a probable explanation for this could be that a majority of the women who participated in the Prospective Population Study were not overweight or obese.

A new study conducted by Columbia University shows that poor oral health may contribute to the development of Dementia.

The Study

The researchers at Columbia University tested the memory capabilities of nearly 2,300 individuals of 60 and above. The Findings

All of the volunteers were given various memory tests. It was found that individuals who recorded the maximum levels of periodontitis causing bacteria were 3 times more likely to have difficulty in remembering a three-word sequence in comparison to those who had healthy gums and teeth. Also, volunteers with high levels of periodontitis causing bacteria were two times less likely to pass a memory test that involved mental arithmetic.

The Conclusion

The researchers believe that there is a link between poor dental health and diseases that involve memory loss, such as Dementia. Though, experts accept that more research needs to be done on this matter, they unanimously acknowledge the possibility of association between gum diseases and Dementia.

They recruited 104 primary, informal caregivers of dementia sufferers by consulting Alzheimer’s Australia and Dementia Australia, and by running social media advertising.

They asked the caregivers to complete three questionnaires: a questionnaire to collect their social demographic characteristics, the popular DASS-21 Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the commonly used PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index).

They found that their participants had been caring for dementia sufferers for an average of 4.8 years, with 76 percent of these caregivers being female.

Ninety-four percent of the participants reported being poor sleepers, with 84 percent complaining that they struggled to fall asleep and 72 percent complaining that they struggled to remain asleep for long enough.

Stop for a moment and think of 94 percent. That is a staggeringly high percentage to suffer from some level of insomnia, most certainly very much higher than in the general population.

Unsurprisingly, stress turned out to be the strongest predictor of poor sleep quality, but depression and anxiety disorders was not far behind.

Forty-four percent of the caregivers reported having been diagnosed with two or more chronic conditions like cardiovascular diseasearthritis, or type 2 diabetes.

Many of the participants reported struggling with depression, anxiety disorders, and stress, with significant levels of psychological distress registered.

Depression was a moderate predictor of poor daytime functioning.

This poses a huge problem for relatives of dementia sufferers, as few families want to put their elderly relatives away in long-term care facilities. But the psychological distress, poor sleep, and health problems can also be a problem when these interfere with their ability to take care of their elderly relatives.

The scans of 128 of each participant’s brain areas were taken both while they were at rest and while they were engaged in a concentration task.

They were then categorized into underweight (BMI less than 18.5), normal weight (BMI between 18.6 and 24.9), overweight (BMI between 25 and 29.9), obese (BMI of 30 and up), and morbidly obese (BMI of 40 and up).

For all ages, brain function and blood flow declined progressively as BMI increased. This was true for almost all regions of the brain and both while the participants were at rest and concentrating.

This pattern was especially striking in the areas particularly involved in Alzheimer’s disease, namely the temporal and parietal lobes, the hippocampus, the posterior cingulate gyrus, and the precuneus.

For these areas, activity and blood flow started to decrease from normal weight, and then further to overweight, obese, and morbidly obese.

This is depressing when considering that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has calculated that 72 percent of American adults are overweight and 42 percent of them are obese. Sadly, 40 percent of young people aged 20 to 39 are obese, as are 44.8 percent of those between 40 and 59, and 42.8 percent of those above 60 years.

On the upside, a study like this shows in no uncertain terms that dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are lifestyle diseases that can be prevented using healthy dieting and exercise to lower body weight.

In fact, drinking this common drink in “moderation” (often highly recommended by health experts) can drastically decrease your brain health and cognitive function over a few-year period.

Many studies show that moderate alcohol intake is beneficial for cardiovascular disease and a wide range of other health conditions.

But how about your brain?

Scientists took the data of 550 people collected by the Whitehall II cohort study.

At the beginning of the study, the subjects’ average age was 43 years.

They collected info on people’s alcohol intake and cognitive abilities periodically over 30 years.

They also took a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of their brains at the end of the study.

The researchers divided the participants into

– Light drinkers: 1–6 units of alcohol per week

– Moderate drinkers: 14–21 units of alcohol per week

– Heavy drinkers: more than 30 units of alcohol per week

The brain and cognitive functions of heavy drinkers were worse than the moderate drinkers who were, in turn, worse than the light drinkers.

In fact, there was no difference between the light drinkers and the complete abstainers on brain structure and cognitive abilities.

But the surprising finding is that moderate drinking is also bad for the brain.

One medium glass of wine (175 ml) contains two units of alcohol and so do 24 ounces of beer.

This means that one glass of wine or two beers a day will place you in the category of moderate drinkers, whose alcohol intake is too high for good brain health.

Prevent and Even Lower Alzheimer’s Risk – This Gut Issue Increases Alzheimer’s Risk by 600 %

Gut health is usually not on the long list of risk factors when it comes to dementia.

But according to a new study from University of California at San Francisco and Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, it should be.

One specific gut health issue (you may not even know you have) can increase your risk of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia up to 600%.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comes in several forms, of which the two most common types are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In this study, the researchers found a relationship between both of these forms and dementia.

The researchers collected the records of 1,742 IBD patients from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database and found 17,420 controls that matched them on sex, income, access to healthcare, and conditions that normally co-occur with dementia.

The subjects in both the study and control groups were 45 years and older and were all followed for about 16 years.

While 5.5 percent of IBD patients developed dementia in this period, only 1.4 percent of those in the control group did so.

After ensuring that other dementia risk factors (like cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and smoking) did not influence their results, the researchers concluded that those with IBD were approximately 2.54 times more likely to develop dementia and more than 6 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than people without IBD were.

Further, those with IBD developed dementia around 7 years earlier than those without IBD did, at ages 76.24 and 83.45 years, respectively.

The dementia risk increased even further for those who had IBD the longest, compared with those for whom it was a new diagnosis.

While there is still much disagreement and uncertainty about the precise mechanism that connects IBD to dementia, it is understood that conditions that involve the perforation of the walls of the gastrointestinal tract cause gut bacteria-derived neurotoxic metabolites to travel to the central nervous system and into the brain.

Unhealthy habits affect you much sooner than you think. Joosten states that people understand that their habits might affect their heart health, but they fail to take their brain into account.

In his own words, “What’s bad for the heart is also bad for the brain.”

In order to conduct this research, 3778 people were studied between the ages of 35 to 82. The entire group was provided with cognitive function tests, ranging from their ability to reason and plan, as well as how comfortable they were in switching tasks.

Another test was used to determine their memory functioning.

The Framingham Risk Score was then used to determine each individual’s cardiovascular-related risk over the period of the next 10 years.

Those who were found to be more at risk for heart disease were also found to perform 50% worse on the cognitive tests.

Some of the biggest contributors to the decline in cognitive health were diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking and bad cholesterol.

Smokers with a 15-a-day habit had, on average, a 2.4 points drop in their cognitive scores, while those with a habit exceeding 16 a day dropped by 3.43.

The memory tests showed precisely the same results.

The study was published in “Stroke,” the journal of the American Heart Association.

Prevent and Even Reverse Dementia – Shocking Cause of Dementia (And Ways to Avoid It)

Today, we understand that a person’s genetics and conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes are associated with the risk of developing dementia.

But an interesting study in a recent edition of the journal JAMA Network Open reveals a cause that nobody had thought of before.

Yet most of us are at high risk of this cause of dementia.

A team of Taiwanese researchers identified 8,135 people who were newly diagnosed with hearing loss between 2000 and 2011 from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. They then found the same number of hearing people with whom to compare them.

Almost all of the subjects were between 54 and 76 years old with an average age of 65.

The question they asked was: how many people from each group will develop dementia between 2000 and 2013?

In the hearing loss group, the rate of dementia was 19.38 per 1000 person-years, compared with 13.98 in the hearing group.

When they crunched the numbers further, they discovered that people with hearing loss had a 17% risk of dementia.

This was especially high for people with hearing loss between the ages of 45 to 64, who had more than twice the risk that their hearing peers had.

40% of people in this age group with hearing loss suffered some level of dementia during the follow-up period.

The researchers were not sure why there is an association between hearing loss and dementia. But despite this finding, hearing loss is not the leading cause of dementia.

Research continues in the field of Alzheimer’s disease prevention, and new information comes to light almost weekly.

In the study, scientists looked at health indicators for people aged 55 to 100. What they found was that for those with hypertension in the middle-age group, (defined as age 55-70), a specific biomarker that is tied to Alzheimer’s disease is present. As the vascular damage increases, so does the biomarker.

The study looked at pulse pressure, which is found by subtracting diastolic (bottom) pressure from systolic (top). The higher the pulse pressure was in the participants, the higher the concentration of amyloid beta or p-tau proteins in their spinal fluid.

These are the biomarkers that are found to be responsible for cell death in the brain that leads directly to Alzheimer’s.

Tackle Dementia and Memory Loss – Shocking Heart Health and Dementia Connection

Most of us think of poor cardiovascular health as causing strokes and heart attacks, which is terrifying enough.

But a study that has just been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reveals a connection between poor heart health and dementia.

That’s a condition that most of us dread more than anything else.

In 2008, the journal Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, published a study that summarized the main risk factors for serious cardiovascular events, like heart attacks, strokes, coronary heart disease, and heart failure. The authors derived these risk factors from the Framingham Heart Study, a huge study that ran for decades.

People who score highly on these risk factors do not necessarily have cardiovascular disease yet, but participants in the Framingham Heart Study who scored highly for these factors were much more likely than their peers were to suffer a cardiovascular event in the following 10 years.

The risk factors are age, sex, smoking status, total cholesterol, HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, hypertension medication, and diabetes status.

The authors of the new study wondered whether people with many of these cardiovascular risk factors were more likely than those without them to develop dementia in the following two decades, and decided to find out.

They collected the medical data of 1,588 people who had participated in the Rush Memory and Aging Project. At the beginning of the study, they had an average age of 79 and were all dementia-free.

They were followed for up to 21 years and each participant was given a battery of 19 cognitive tests every year to test abilities like episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, visuospatial ability, and perceptual speed.

Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on the brains of a subsample of subjects to obtain their brain volumes and structures.

After approximately two decades, it turned out that people with the highest risk scores were significantly more likely to suffer a decline in episodic and working memory and perceptual speed. Their scores on general cognitive tests that incorporated many different abilities were also lower than those whose risk factors scores were closer to normal.

Those with high cardiovascular risk scores tended to have a smaller hippocampus, less gray matter, smaller brains, and more damage to their white matter, which explained why their cognitive abilities deteriorated faster.

It is, of course, normal for cognitive abilities to decline with old age, but they deteriorated faster for those people with high cardiovascular risk scores. In fact, in this study, faster deterioration could already be seen after less than six months.

This was true for both people with and without a genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s disease.

The authors recommended that people started tackling these cardiovascular risk factors aggressively during their middle age to prevent them from ruining a long and peaceful retirement.

By the end of the study, they had found no difference between the Aspirin and placebo takers in developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. They also found no difference in the rate of cognitive decline between the two groups.

People around age 70 have weaker blood vessels than younger people, which is presumably true of the blood vessels in their brains too.

This makes it all the more important that their blood can clot effectively when there are small ruptures in tiny blood vessels in their brains. If this cannot happen, the chances of them suffering from a catastrophic stroke is far greater.

A recent study concluded that some genuinely tasty foods may be able to control Alzheimer’s disease even better than drugs.

In September 2015, Neurology distributed an article in which a team of American researchers demonstrated that resveratrol might be an effective Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Researchers divided 119 Alzheimer’s patients into groups that either received resveratrol or a placebo. The resveratrol group started with 500 mg per day, escalated by 500 mg every 13 weeks, for an eventual total of 2 g per day.

By the end of the year, the resveratrol group had approximately the same levels of amyloid-beta40 (Abeta40) in their blood and cerebrospinal fluid as at the beginning of the experiment. The placebo group, on the other hand, had substantially lower levels, an effect that usually accompanies the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

An MRI scan also revealed that the swelling of the brains of the resveratrol subjects had diminished considerably.

While some participants complained of nausea, diarrhea, and weight loss, resveratrol was relatively free of side effects.

The authors warned that they had used a special pharmaceutical-grade resveratrol and claimed that you would have to drink about 1,000 bottles of wine to obtain the same amount. For that reason, together with their relatively small number of participants, they advised that their findings should be further tested, rather than immediately acted upon.

The way in which resveratrol manages dementia is still being researched.

A team at Oregon’s Health and Science University reviewed the literature in the journal Brain Research Reviews, and concluded that resveratrol activated sirtuin proteins, which also happen to be activated by low calorie diets.


These proteins have been shown to protect the brain cells of mice with Huntington’s disease, a disease that causes dementia and the degeneration of brain cells.

Another study by researchers at the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease has established that resveratrol does not inhibit the production of Abeta, but rather promotes its intercellular degradation. In other words, resveratrol kills the Abeta between cells, instead of allowing it to form plaque inside them.

Pure resveratrol supplements are available from natural health stores, and you can further stack your diet with the foods that contain it. Who knows, altogether you might manage to obtain enough of it to protect your brain cells from age-related decline.

A study in the latest edition of Scientific Reports, written by researchers at the University of Bath and King’s College London, now proposes a mechanism through which one specific type of food causes Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately, it’s a food that is everywhere as an additive or by itself. It’s known by many names, as attempts to disguise its presence in ingredient lists are crafty.

Sugar molecules inside your body have this nasty habit of binding to protein and fat molecules. When this binding is controlled by enzymes, it’s normal and harmless.

But when this binding happens without the involvement of enzymes, scientists call it glycation, which can be harmful.

During the process of glycation, protein and fat cells can be damaged, and harmful advanced glycation end products can be released that can damage other cells even further.

None of this is new knowledge, but researchers never quite understood how glycation led to Alzheimer’s.

The Bath and London scientists studied brain samples of people with and without Alzheimer’s. They discovered that at the beginning of the disease, glycation damaged an enzyme called MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor).

This MIF enzyme is part of your immune system. When proteins start building up in your brain, as happens at the beginning of Alzheimer’s, MIF is supposed to stimulate other brain cells, called glia, to deal with this abnormal protein buildup.

But because glycation suppresses MIF, this process cannot get going, thereby allowing Alzheimer’s to proceed undisturbed.

In other words, your immune system has a mechanism to combat the changes that lead to this disease, but excessive sugar intake kills this mechanism.

We often wonder why our immune systems are so feeble and cannot protect us against cancer, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, and other widespread 21st-century ailments.

But this study shows that our immune systems are a lot better than we think—but they need a bit of help from us in the form of a reasonably healthy diet.

Canadian researchers examined the brains of patients who had died of Alzheimer’s disease, finding that Alzheimer’s brains contained significantly more cholesterol than non-Alzheimer’s brains.

But that’s only half the story… They also discovered that Alzheimer’s brains and healthy brains do very different things with cholesterol.

And this may hold the key to finally cure Alzheimer’s.

The Canadian team found that Alzheimer’s brains retained cholesterol while healthy brains metabolized it. This study appeared in the journal Neurobiology of Disease.

A few years later, a different team published a study in Molecular Neurodegeneration in which they actually demonstrated what happened to neurons when they loaded cholesterol into their membranes.

These neurons immediately started resembling and behaving like neurons in Alzheimer’s brains.

Compared to non-Alzheimer’s neurons, Different genes were turned on and off, the transport of proteins in those neurons were blocked, and they secreted a lot more amyloid-beta42, a protein that appears in large amounts in Alzheimer’s brains.

But at present researchers still don’t understand the exact role that cholesterol plays in the development of the disease.

Until exact cause and effect relationships can be proven, it’s best to drop cholesterol to healthy levels.

Every time we read “new” Alzheimer’s research, it’s just the same old thing. It focuses on the genetic factors and doesn’t tell us anything new.

Little if any attention has been paid to the connection between Alzheimer’s and the lifestyle choices we make, especially diet ones.

But recent research from scientists from the University of Bath and King’s College has found one common ingredient that has been holding Alzheimer’s hostage and even helping it manifest.

Researchers examined samples of brain matter of people with and without Alzheimer’s to reveal the damage high blood sugar causes proteins and immune cells.

When sugar (or glucose) reaches your bloodstream, many of its molecules bind to protein molecules in a process called glycation.

Not only can glycation damage proteins, the by-products of the glycation process like beta-amyloid that causes brain plaque buildup are also harmful. This suggests that too much dietary sugar contributes to Alzheimer’s.

But researchers also discovered another extremely harmful effect of glycation – at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease – it damages an enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor (or MIF).

MIF enzymes are a part of your immune system. When abnormal proteins start to build up in your brain, MIF enzymes are supposed to help remove them and/or limit potential damage. But when damaged, they can’t prevent abnormal protein plaque buildup of the brain, which is how the disease gets going.

In short, if you eat too many simple sugars that build up as glucose in your bloodstream, glycation becomes likelier, putting you more at risk from Alzheimer’s.

Reverse the Effects of Alzheimer’s Disease – These Delicious Foods Stop Alzheimer’s Development

Occasionally scientists stumble onto information that is promising not only for people who suffer from diseases, but also for those who just enjoy good food.

A recent study concluded that some genuinely tasty foods may be able to control Alzheimer’s disease even better than drugs.

If you enjoy researching natural health topics and following a naturally healthy lifestyle, you have probably heard of polyphenols, the chemicals found in red wine, red grapes, berries, and several other food types. They are powerful antioxidants, which explains why naturopaths recommend them so liberally.

An increasing number of researchers have become interested in the ability of one of these polyphenols to prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It is called resveratrol, and is a prominent ingredient in red wine, red grapes, pomegranate, dark chocolate, peanuts, and soybeans.

In September 2015, Neurology distributed an article in which a team of American researchers demonstrated that resveratrol might be an effective Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Researchers divided 119 Alzheimer’s patients into groups that either received resveratrol or a placebo. The resveratrol group started with 500 mg per day, escalated by 500 mg every 13 weeks, for an eventual total of 2 g per day.

By the end of the year, the resveratrol group had approximately the same levels of amyloid-beta40 (Abeta40) in their blood and cerebrospinal fluid as at the beginning of the experiment. The placebo group, on the other hand, had substantially lower levels, an effect that usually accompanies the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

An MRI scan also revealed that the swelling of the brains of the resveratrol subjects had diminished considerably.

While some participants complained of nausea, diarrhea, and weight loss, resveratrol was relatively free of side effects.

The authors warned that they had used a special pharmaceutical-grade resveratrol and claimed that you would have to drink about 1,000 bottles of wine to obtain the same amount. For that reason, together with their relatively small number of participants, they advised that their findings should be further tested, rather than immediately acted upon.

The way in which resveratrol manages dementia is still being researched.

A team at Oregon’s Health and Science University reviewed the literature in the journal Brain Research Reviews, and concluded that resveratrol activated sirtuin proteins, which also happen to be activated by low calorie diets.


These proteins have been shown to protect the brain cells of mice with Huntington’s disease, a disease that causes dementia and the degeneration of brain cells.

Another study by researchers at the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease has established that resveratrol does not inhibit the production of Abeta, but rather promotes its intercellular degradation. In other words, resveratrol kills the Abeta between cells, instead of allowing it to form plaque inside them.

Pure resveratrol supplements are available from natural health stores, and you can further stack your diet with the foods that contain it. Who knows, altogether you might manage to obtain enough of it to protect your brain cells from age-related decline.

And as the exiting news from the research shows, if we can prevent type 2 diabetes, we can avoid brain-damaging Alzheimer’s disease.

We know nuts are good for the health.

They are packed with nutritional fiber, a plethora of healthy antioxidants, and numerous anti-inflammatory substances.

But maybe most importantly, a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found this one nut to slow down the progression of dementia in at-risk seniors.

Researchers used 636 participants aged between 63 and 79 from California and Barcelona. At the beginning of the study they were declared cognitively healthy.

The researchers divided them into two groups – one received between 30 and 60 grams of walnuts per day – the other consumed none.

They administered neurocognitive tests before the study and then again after two years. The 108 participants in Barcelona were also given frequent brain MRI scans.

When they compared the groups, they found no difference between the cognitive functions.

But their findings revealed some other interesting things.

Smokers in the walnut-eating group displayed a slower cognitive decline than smokers in the non-eating walnut group.

In addition, people who started the study with lower than average neuropsychological test scores also benefited from walnut consumption.

This implies that walnuts make little difference to people who are cognitively normal or healthy, but it shows they can help those who are most at risk of developing dementia.

Stop and Reverse Dementia and Memory Loss – These Easy Mental Games Bring Dementia to a Halt

Scientists from the Kumon Institute of Education and Tokyo’s Keio University have just revealed that a specific learning therapy can stop the progression of dementia in its tracks.

Unlike other “preventing” methods, this one seems to work even after the onset of dementia.

Their subjects were 57 seniors housed in nursing and care facilities in Japan.

Between July 2015 and July 2016, they gave 30 of these people a course of learning therapy, consisting of the answering of easy reading and mathematical calculation questions for five days a week.

The other 27, called the control group, received no therapy at all.

To track their progress, the researchers used the standard Japanese scale that is used to rate seniors from one to five according to the amount of nursing care they require.

By the end of the year, the condition of the participants who received the learning therapy showed almost no change, while the condition of those who received nothing deteriorated at the expected rate.

The leading researcher in the study described this type of brain stimulation as an example of a non-pharmaceutical treatment that worked.

He also expressed his satisfaction at discovering a dementia treatment that was substantially cheaper than drugs.

The January 2016 edition of the journal Current Opinion in Psychiatry included an interesting, but alarming, article on the cause of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

It seems like a simple activity, most of us just take as a normal part of life slowly and sneakily kills your brain function until nothing is left.

The good news is, this can be reversed if caught in time.

Scientists at the Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest Health Sciences, conducted a review of previously published studies and found that most of them backed the idea that stress could lead to depression and dementia.

According to scientists, stress affects the same parts of the brain as short-term fear and anxiety do. It causes the amygdala to become overactive while simultaneously suppressing the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex.

What does this mean?

The amygdala is the part of your brain that is most strongly associated with emotions. This is the part that becomes active when you are afraid or, as we are now learning, when you are stressed for a long period of time.

Your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex are the parts of your brain where most of your logical thinking takes place. When you are extremely emotional, these thinking centers become under active and take a back seat to the amygdala.

The problem during long lasting stress periods is that your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex are under active for years.

This causes the cells to degrade, making them less capable of the thinking operations for which they are responsible.

Think of your muscles. If you want them to be strong, you have to use them. The same holds for your hippocampus and your prefrontal cortex.

The new review of existing studies revealed that these thinking centers in the brains of people who suffer from chronic stress are smaller and physically different from those in the brains of people who live without such stress.

The biggest problem is that long-lasting stress in the past can affect your brain today. So if you were under a lot of stress in your 40s that’s now gone, your brain is still suffering.

The good news is you can workout your brain today to reverse this process. Doing word-puzzles, Sudoku, learn a language or juggle balls have all been shown to boost brain health.
