Improve Cholesterol and Heart Health – One Coffee Type Prevents Heart Attack—Another Causes It

Studies on coffee consumption and cardiovascular health are very contradictory.

Some studies show extreme benefits of coffee while others show extreme dangers of heart attack and stroke.

So, a team of Norwegian researchers decided to research whether the way we brew our coffee might be what makes a difference.

Indeed, one type of coffee brewing was found to significantly decrease risk of heart attack while another type increased the risk.

From 1985 onwards, the research team recruited a large sample of 508,747 healthy Norwegian adults that was roughly representative of the population regarding age, race, gender, and so on.

They observed these participants for an average of 20 years and were interested to see who would die of cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart attacks.

During this period, the team also asked the subjects about their coffee drinking habits and brewing methods and recorded changes, if any.

During the 20 years of follow-up, 46,341 participants died, including 12,621 from cardiovascular disease.

Of these cardiovascular disease deaths, 6,202 were caused by heart attacks, and 2,894 were caused by strokes.

Compared with those who drank no coffee at all, those who drank filtered coffee were 15 percent less likely to die prematurely of any cause. Men were 12 percent and women were 20 percent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

Unfiltered coffee was a different matter, though, and no healthier than abstaining from coffee altogether for younger adults and causing deaths of any cause, deaths of cardiovascular disease, and deaths of heart attacks for those over the age of 60.

So why is filtered coffee healthier for our hearts than unfiltered coffee?

From the available literature, the researchers concluded that the culprits were the chemical substances in the coffee grounds and oils that remained in the coffee if it was unfiltered. These chemicals cause high cholesterol and, thus, cardiovascular disease and early death.

Using the study as a guide for coffee brewing, it means that you should stay away from Turkish coffee, which is yummy but unfiltered. Any other finely ground coffees in which the grains remain unfiltered at the bottom of your cup while you drink the liquid from the top are equally unhealthy.

A French press or any other plunger device that uses a meshed metal screen at the bottom of the plunger is not good enough to qualify as a filtering device either, as it can’t thoroughly filter out the oils from the coffee beans.

The best filters were found to be percolators with paper or fabric filters.

Improve Cholesterol and Heart Health – This Cholesterol Combats Alzheimer’s

An excess of cholesterol wreaks havoc in our blood vessels, and researchers have now discovered it causes Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Canadian researchers examined the brains of patients who had died of Alzheimer’s disease, finding that Alzheimer’s brains contained significantly more cholesterol than non-Alzheimer’s brains.

But that’s only half the story… They also discovered that Alzheimer’s brains and healthy brains do very different things with cholesterol.

And this may hold the key to finally cure Alzheimer’s.

The Canadian team found that Alzheimer’s brains retained cholesterol while healthy brains metabolized it. This study appeared in the journal Neurobiology of Disease.

A few years later, a different team published a study in Molecular Neurodegeneration in which they actually demonstrated what happened to neurons when they loaded cholesterol into their membranes.

These neurons immediately started resembling and behaving like neurons in Alzheimer’s brains.

Compared to non-Alzheimer’s neurons, Different genes were turned on and off, the transport of proteins in those neurons were blocked, and they secreted a lot more amyloid-beta42, a protein that appears in large amounts in Alzheimer’s brains.

But at present researchers still don’t understand the exact role that cholesterol plays in the development of the disease.

Until exact cause and effect relationships can be proven, it’s best to drop cholesterol to healthy levels.

Improve Cholesterol and Heart Health – The Best Diet to Lower Bad Cholesterol

Hundreds of diets all claim to be the best at weight loss, cardiovascular health, and other health benefits.

But which diet works the best?

A study just published in the journal BMJ has answered this question.

There were many candidates for this short-term gain, but only ONE winner for long-term weight loss and cardiovascular health benefit.

A large multinational team of researchers reviewed 121 studies with about 22,000 participants.

In these studies, the subjects were divided into a group that followed a diet and a group that continued to eat normally. They all compared these groups based on weight and cardiovascular health factors.

In general, the diets were divided into low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate macronutrient diets.

The macronutrient diet contained more vegetables, fruits, and legumes than our current diet as well as less fat and carbohydrates.

The team also looked at various popular diets, like Atkins (keto type), Mediterranean, DASH, and Zone.

Within six months of commencing the diets, all participants showed slight weight reduction and improvement in cardiovascular health.

Regarding weight loss, low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets led to a loss of between four and five kilograms (or 8.8 and 11 pounds) over the six-month period.

Moderate macronutrient diets were less effective.

Low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets were also approximately equally effective at reducing both systolic (5 mmHg) and diastolic (3 mmHg) blood pressure by six months.

Moderate macronutrient diets were less effective here too.

Low-fat and moderate macronutrient diets were the best at reducing bad LDL cholesterol, and low-carbohydrate diets were the best at increasing good HDL cholesterol—but again, only at six months.

Atkins, DASH, and Zone were approximately equally effective at reducing weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol by six months.

By 12 months, however, the picture looked quite different. By then, the cardiovascular effects and weight loss benefits of all these diets but one had disappeared.

Only the Mediterranean diet maintained its positive effects on cardiovascular health by 12 months. The largest of these effects was on cholesterol reduction.

There are three things to learn from this study.

First, our normal diet is so unhealthy that any other diet can have positive effects—in the short term, at least.

Second, if weight loss is your priority, then Atkins, DASH, and Zone are your best bets in the short term. However, if heart health is more important—which it should be—then the Mediterranean diet is the only one that maintains its positive health effects in the long term.

Third, dieting alone is not a terribly effective weight loss tool, which is why it is better to combine it with other positive lifestyle changes, like regular exercise, stress reduction, and adequate sleep.

There’s an unprecedented amount of people taking statins and following dietary advice from the American Heart Association to cure their high cholesterol problems.

A research group from Dublin put a revolutionary theory to a test in a study published in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes – if something isn’t working, do the exact opposite!

Researchers asked 1500 adults to keep food diaries for four days. They also collected their subject’s fasting blood samples and conducted various other tests.

Those who ate more dairy products had the lowest body mass indices, the lowest percentage of body fat, the smallest waist circumference, the smallest waist-to-hip ratio, and the lowest systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which are all signs of good health.

The subjects were split into three groups. They consumed:

1. Butter and cream;
2. Whole milk;
3. Reduced fat milks and yogurt.

If the traditional advice is correct, you would expect the last group to have yielded the healthiest results – however, they had higher total cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat) levels than the other groups.

Those who drank the most milk, whole or low-fat, had lower circulating levels of some inflammatory markers than their peers, and also had higher insulin sensitivity.

Now, The Journal of the American Heart Association has published an even more worrying link related to these popular beverages – they cause unhealthy cholesterol profiles as well.

This is serious business. Especially since having high cholesterol drastically increases other health-related problems, namely strokes and cardiovascular disease.

Sugary drinks are the offenders. These, of course, include sodas, but also other drinks with added sugar like fruit punches and sweetened fruit juices.

Researchers examined the data of 3,146 participants who joined between 1991 and 2014, and 3,584 participants who joined between 2002 and 2011. The first cohort was in their 50s, 60s, and 70s, while the second cohort were in their 40s.

The data included information on cholesterol at enrollment and at subsequent examinations every four years over a 12-year period.

In the older cohort, they discovered that those who drank one or more sugary drinks per day were 98 percent more likely to have low HDL cholesterol and 53 percent more likely to have high triglycerides.

High triglycerides are unhealthy because they are fats in our blood that might become trapped in our blood vessel walls with LDL cholesterol.

Low HDL cholesterol is bad because this type of cholesterol is meant to remove unhealthy LDL-cholesterol to our livers where it is broken down and excreted.

If you have both high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol, you have a condition called dyslipidemia that causes heart and blood vessel damage over some years, suggesting our attachment to sugary drinks gradually worsens our cholesterol profiles the longer we drink them.

There was no conclusive evidence found with natural fruit juices and diet soda, but the authors suggest drinking water to remain hydrated instead.

Drinking water instead of soda is a good start, but to avoid high cholesterol problems completely, and reverse its effects, you need to cut out this ONE ingredient you didn’t even know you were consuming…

The mice were then given nobiletin to see the effects compared to the group that did not receive it.

The nobiletin-fed mice weighed substantially less than the other group. They also had significantly lower levels of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance.

In those mice that already had a buildup of plaques in their arteries, they noticed that the plaques were getting smaller as a result of the nobiletin.

The scientists thought that it had an effect on AMP Kinase, which is the mechanism that regulates our bodies’ ability to burn fat for energy.

Other research suggests that nobiletin slows down the process of dementia, improves glucose and fat metabolism, reduces insulin resistance, and reduces inflammation and oxidation that damage blood vessels in cardiovascular disease.

Research published in British Medical Journal in 1995 states women who have higher amounts of vitamin C and flavonoids in their body are 19 percent less likely to develop strokes.

Both the smooth muscle cells and immune cells absorbed fewer of the fats when treated with the FMBP. They also identified two key atherosclerosis-causing proteins in the immune cells that were blocked, suggesting FMBP reduces the risk of atherosclerosis.

Mice, which were genetically predisposed to atherosclerosis, were fed a high-fat diet. They were then treated with either statins or FMBP. Some were left untreated.

When they compared the three groups, the untreated mice had atherosclerosis, while those on statins and FMBP exhibited approximately the same reduction in plaque.

They were interested in insulin, glucose, glycated hemoglobin, cholesterol, other blood fats, C-reactive protein, uric acid, and blood urea nitrogen. They then compiled a cardiometabolic disease risk score for each participant and compared people who consumed high sulfur amino acid diets to those who consumed low ones.

They found that the ones who had a higher sulfur amino acid intake had the highest risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. They also discovered that the average sulfur amino acid consumption in the US was over twice the recommended daily dose.

So what contains so much of this stuff?

Basically all protein-rich foods – any meat, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

Scientists noticed that the participants who ate the most grains, fruit, and vegetables had lower heart disease risks, suggesting that you should simply adjust the balance between them and protein-rich foods.

Finally, it was found that cholesterol wasn’t so much of a problem if you consumed a reasonable number of calories a day – it was overeating that caused the problems.

Eggs are another example. They contain a quarter of our dietary cholesterol in the US, so why don’t egg eaters have an increased risk of coronary heart disease or have more strokes?

This goes to show that the old daily recommended cholesterol intake of 300mg can be binned.

Instead, the authors recommend following healthy diets like the Mediterranean diet, as these tend to contain healthy grains and fiber that can keep cholesterol in check.

Allopurinol is the most common drug prescribed for gout sufferers, so they investigated whether these prescriptions could reduce their risk of suffering from cardiovascular events.

For fatal heart events, those who were prescribed the drug during the past five years had an increased risk of 41 percent compared to the 33 percent who had not taken it.

For non-fatal events, those that took prescribed drugs had a 34 percent increased risk compared to the 38 percent of the non-drug takers.

This means that urate-lowering drugs did not work to attenuate the risk that gout posed for the participants. Therefore, drugs cannot control the worst potential consequences of gout.

  1. Smokers were three times more likely to  suffer from peripheral vascular disease.

The subject’s scans revealed the primary emotion-processing center of their noise-exposed brains, which is called the amygdala, was more active compared to the brains of the subjects who lived in quieter areas.

 

They also found a lot more chronic inflammation in the blood vessels of their noise-exposed subjects.

 

Scientists concluded constant noise activates your amygdala, which then activates your body’s stress responses. This leads to chronic inflammation everywhere – blood vessels included, thus resulting in heart disease.

– the second received transcendental meditation,
– the third received meditation with exercise and diet,
– and the fourth received conventional drug treatment.

 

The blood flow to and from the hearts of the people in the transcendental meditation/cardiac rehabilitation group improved by 20.7 percent and the transcendental meditation group improved by 12.8 percent.

 

Exercise and diet treatment increased it by 5.8 percent, and with drugs 10.3 percent.

 

Why is this relaxation technique so effective?

 

Psychosocial stress worsens coronary disease. But decreased stress leads to decreased hormones, and therefore a drop in blood vessel inflammation. Hence, why transcendental meditation helps with the fight against cholesterol.

Researchers wanted to know whether composite flour made from starch and beans was more heart healthy than one made purely from starches.

 

They recruited 39 subjects who were grouped according to age (15-26, 27-38, and 39-50).

 

They first put them on a steamed rice diet for four days that required them to eat 100 grams of white rice for breakfast every morning.

 

The next diet was a composite flour one for 16 days that required them to have 100 grams of steamed rice made from cassava roots and mung beans.

 

Over a series of days, they tested their participant’s blood for glucose, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol.

 

There was a clear drop in glucose levels when eating the composite rice, suggesting it could be a solution for those who are susceptible to diabetes. And while the total cholesterol remained the same, HDL (good) cholesterol increased while LDL (bad) cholesterol decreased.

 

Scientists attributed the beneficial effects of the composite rice to arginine, an alpha-amino acid found abundantly in protein-rich foods. Previous studies had found that arginine could lower cholesterol.

 

If you want to try baking your breads and other baked goodies with composite flour, it is easier to start with bean flours, since they have no strong taste and add a nice buttery texture.

 

Here are some ideas:

 

For flat doughs like pizza, use 30-35 percent bean flour mixed with 65-70 percent wheat flour.

 

For bread, use 20-25 percent bean flour.

 

For batter when baking or frying, use 50 percent bean flour.

 

Use it as a soup thickener and creamer.

If possible, try to wake up the same time every day of the week. Staying up late and then sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday morning and then having to wake up early on Monday puts quite a strain on your system.

 

Choosing a career where you love waking up to go to work is extremely helpful as well.

 

3) Stuffing your mouth stuffs your heart

 

The plaque in the arteries that causes heart attacks develops over many years. One meal is not going to suddenly cause narrow arteries. However, studies have shown that big high-fat high calorie meals put more strain on your system that constricts blood vessels, which can trigger heart attacks.

 

Indulging yourself in good food occasionally doesn’t have to be harmful. Just keep the portion sizes moderate and eat slowly.

 

4) On the Potty

 

Moving the bowels is one of the most private things we can do. Most of us want to have privacy and not be distracted. And we definitely don’t want to experience a heart attack at that point.

 

Bowel movements, however (especially if you’re constipated), put extreme pressure on the chest, slowing down the blood returning back to the heart.

 

To lower your risk of having a heart attack on the potty, make sure you eat enough fiber (at least 25 gr/day), drink enough water, and avoid stress.

 

5) Not all exercises are created equal

 

Exercising is one of the key elements to improve cardiovascular health and avoid heart attacks. Too much, too quickly, however, can have the opposite effect.

 

If you’re not in good physical shape, begin slowly with walking and light jogging. As your health and stamina improve, you can, and should, engage in more vigorous exercises to strengthen your heart.

 

Sex is, in the same way, extremely heart-healthy as long as the intensity is not more than the body can handle.

 

6) Any kind of stressful event

The scientists recruited 45 subjects, all of whom were overweight or obese and all of whom had high cholesterol.

 

They placed participants on a typical American diet for two weeks prior to the research so they could start with the same nutritional intake.

 

Each participant was asked to complete three diets in random order for a period of five weeks each:

 

A low fat diet that contained seven percent of its calories from saturated fat, 11 percent from monounsaturated fat, and six percent from polyunsaturated fat.

 

A medium fat diet that contained six percent of its calories from saturated fat, 17 percent from monounsaturated fat, and nine percent from polyunsaturated fat. (The monounsaturated fat consisted of high oleic acid oils).

 

A medium fat diet with exactly the same specifications as the one above, except the monounsaturated fat was obtained from a daily avocado instead of oleic acid.

 

At the beginning of the study and at the completion of each diet, they measured their participants’ overall LDL cholesterol, their large buoyant LDL cholesterol particles, their small dense LDL particles, their oxidized cholesterol, and their blood lutein.

 

As expected, the participant’s LDL and oxidized LDL cholesterol were lower after the avocado medium fat diet. Their lutein levels were also predictably higher.

 

This shows clearly that avocado helps lower cholesterol, not only by being a healthy monounsaturated fat, but also by being a strong antioxidant.

 

Oxidized cholesterol is overwhelmingly responsible for our current cardiovascular disease epidemic, and small dense cholesterol particles oxidize the most easily, which is why it is necessary to consume foods like avocado daily to prevent oxidation and this disease.

But a new study from the Medical University of Vienna and published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases shows that these drugs increase your risk of a serious autoimmune bone condition by shocking 362%.

 

Your body breaks down your bones regularly to replace them with new stronger ones, but if it breaks them down quicker than they can be replaced, you are said to have osteoporosis. As a result, your bones are then too thin and brittle and break easily.

 

In 2006 and 2007, scientists collected all medical claims from almost 8 million Austrians. They isolated those who claimed for osteoporosis treatment and those who received statins for high cholesterol. They also picked people who matched them in age, sex and general health for comparison.

 

They were especially interested in those who had taken statins for at least one year; they wanted to see how long-term statin taking affected bone health.

 

They found that the statin-takers were on average 3.62 times more likely to have osteoporosis than non-statin-takers. Yikes!

 

The relationship between statins and osteoporosis was true for both men and women, but not for people taking very small doses.

 

In fact, those who took 10 mg or less per day had a smaller osteoporosis risk than the general population, but doctors almost never prescribe such a small amount.

 

Most statins started to pose a risk at 20 mg per day, making these drug takers almost twice as likely to develop osteoporosis.

 

A daily dosage of 40 mg saw the risk of developing osteoporosis skyrocket to over 5 times more when compared to people who didn’t take any statins.

 

So why does this happen?

 

During and after menopause, women are likely to develop osteoporosis because they have much lower levels of estrogen than at other times during their lives.

 

Estrogen is not the only sex hormone that has this effect; research shows that low levels of other female sex hormones, as well as low levels of testosterone in men, also play havoc with our bone density.

 

We usually think of cholesterol as something bad, but it is also a useful substance that is, among other things, one of the essential building blocks of sex hormones.

 

So, because statins artificially reduce our cholesterol, they interfere with the production of sex hormones, therefore raising the risk of weak brittle bones.

 

This is why it is a better idea to lower our cholesterol via natural methods like diet and exercise so that our bodies can reduce it in their own way.
