Lower LDL Cholesterol Fast Naturally – Cholesterol and Red Meat (A Shocking Study)

 

For decades, scientists have been telling us to eat less red meat, as it is rich in saturated fats, which cause high cholesterol (or so they say).

 

But new research from the University of Nottingham and published in Food & Function put this claim to the test.

 

And the results were shocking.

 

Researchers recruited 46 subjects who agreed to halve their red meat intake for 12 weeks.

 

Instead of red meat, they agreed to eat chicken, fish, or other meat substitutes. Pork and veal were both classified as red meats.

 

Alternatively, they simply halved their red meat portions.

 

Researchers tested their cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index, and a wide range of other blood chemicals before, halfway through, and at the end of the intervention.

 

After 12 weeks, they found almost no significant drop in the cholesterol levels of women, except in those who started with the highest scores before the intervention.

 

On average, men’s cholesterol did drop by approximately 10 percent, with the largest reductions experienced by men being those with the highest scores before the intervention.

 

This was true for LDL and HDL cholesterol, and overall cholesterol scores.

At best, we can learn from this that we don’t have to turn vegetarian to reduce our cholesterol; just halving our red meat intake can reduce it by 10 percent or even more.

 

But that seems to be only half the lesson, as it didn’t seem to work for women at all, except for those who already had high cholesterol.

 

The reason for this is obvious. Saturated fat is not the cause of high cholesterol as doctors have been claiming for decades.

Unlisted ingredients could pose serious health hazards to consumers.

 

Various herbal supplements are not recommended for long-term use and could interfere with other health conditions and ingredients.

 

Moreover, there is a high risk for people with allergies, as some products were found to be contaminated with walnut leaves and gluten.

 

This may explain why some studies have “proved” various herbal remedies useless for conditions, even if it’s a well-known fact that the true herb actually works.

 

In the US, there is still very little control over these herbal products. They are considered a dietary supplement and, unlike medicines, do not need the approval of the FDA.

 

Good advice is to not only carefully examine the herbal product you buy but also to research very thoroughly the reputation of the company that produces these herbal supplements.

 

Oftentimes it’s better to invest in a good-quality organic product than a cheaper product that only provides false security.

They immediately noticed that some of the subject’s HDL cholesterol varied from visit to visit, and from this data, they divided the subjects into four groups:

 

  1. People with low average HDL and low variability in their HDL scores from test to test.
  2. People with high average HDL and low variability in their HDL scores.
  3. People with low average HDL and high variability in their HDL scores.
  4. People with high average HDL and high variability in their HDL scores.

 

During around five years of observation, their subjects experienced 122,192 cases of diabetes, as defined by at least one insurance claim per year for a diabetes drug prescription.

 

They found that people with a high average HDL score and low variability in their HDL scores were the healthiest.

 

People with a low average HDL score or high HDL variability were the most likely to develop diabetes, and those with both a low score and a high variability had the highest risk.

 

Compared to the high average, low variability group:

 

  1. The high average, high variability group was 20 percent more likely to have diabetes.
  2. The low average, low variability group was 35 percent more likely to have diabetes.
  3. The low average, high variability group was 40 percent more likely to have diabetes.

 

This means that we should try to keep our HDL cholesterol stable and high to avoid diabetes. And the same is probably true for heart disease.

We all know that smoking is a cardiovascular disease risk because of the tar that we inhale when the cigarette burns.

But as evidence is piling up around the danger of e-cigarettes, a new study in the journal Radiology reveals what may be the most terrifying results yet.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that convert a liquid into aerosol and thereby enable us to inhale nicotine and fruity and herby flavors that taste good.

 

To simplify the question about the heart health of e-cigarettes, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania decided to test plain e-cigarettes without nicotine or flavors.

 

They recruited 31 people between the ages of 18 and 35, none of whom had smoked e-cigarettes before. They then used an MRI to examine their arteries after taking 16 three-second puffs of an e-cigarette loaded with plain vape juice, consisting mostly of water and either glycerol or propylene glycol, the standard ingredients.

 

To check the flexibility of blood vessels, the scientists constricted the vessels of the thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood vessels expanded again for normal blood flow after they released the cuff.

 

Flexible blood vessels that contract and expand quickly for variable blood flow are healthy; stiff vessels that cannot expand to allow enough blood flow are unhealthy. That is basically what cholesterol does to your blood vessels that is so dangerous.

 

After inhaling the vape juice, the researchers observed:

 

  1. a 34 percent reduction in the ability of blood vessels to expand,
  2. a 17.5 percent reduction in peak blood flow,
  3. a 20 percent reduction in the oxygen carried by the veins, and
  4. a 25.8 percent reduction in the speed at which the blood returned to the normal flow after the cuff release.

 

This means that it is not only tar and nicotine that make smoking hazardous: the inhalation of vape juice from e-cigarettes causes less blood flow through our bodies, less oxygen in our blood, and stiffer blood vessels.

 

And this was from only 16 puffs. Imagine what happens if you smoke e-cigarettes day in and day out.

 

At this stage, it is not obvious why this is the case, as glycerol and propylene glycol are safe to eat. Our bodies obviously don’t like it when they are heated and inhaled.

But when is the time to take action and tackle your cholesterol level?

A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology answers this.

The authors collected data from six large studies that had followed their subjects over long periods, from young adulthood to later life.

 

This gave them the trajectories of 36,030 people’s low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, as well as their systolic and diastolic blood pressure scores from age 18 onward.

 

It also provided them with details of these same people’s later coronary heart diseases, heart failures, and strokes.

 

Armed with all this information, they could calculate whether high cholesterol and blood pressure during early adulthood posed a risk of heart disease later in life and whether action to lower cholesterol and blood pressure after age 40 reduces these risks.

 

These were their findings:

 

  1. Those with LDL cholesterol above 100 mg/dl between the ages of 18 and 39 were 64 percent more likely to have coronary heart disease when compared to people with LDL below 100 mg/dl during this period, even if they lowered their cholesterol after age 40.

 

  1. Those with systolic blood pressure readings of 130 (mmHg) or higher during early adulthood were 37 percent more likely to experience heart failure in later life than those with early scores lower than 120 mmHg.

 

  1. Those with diastolic blood pressure of greater than 80 mmHg during early adulthood were 21 percent more likely to have heart failure later in life than those with scores below 80 mmHg.

 

This seems to be depressing, as it appears to suggest that nothing you do after age 40 matters to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.

 

But this is not true. Consider the following:

 

  1. While your later-life risk of coronary heart disease (clogged arteries) increases if your cholesterol is too high in young adulthood, your risk of stroke and heart failure does not increase significantly if your cholesterol was high in young adulthood but you lowered it after age 40.

 

  1. While your later-life risk of coronary heart disease increases if your cholesterol is too high in young adulthood, it increases even more if you do not lower your cholesterol after age 40.

 

This gives you two good reasons to continue working on your cholesterol when you are older than 40.

They specifically wanted to know whether dairy consumption increased their participant’s risk of dying prematurely of cardiovascular disease, cancer, or all other causes combined.

 

Following up after approximately 14.9 years, they found that 2,468 of their 45,009 participants had died, 59 percent of cancer and 19 percent of cardiovascular disease.

 

But they could find no difference in the death rates of consumers versus non-consumers of dairy products.

 

No type of dairy product puts its consumers at increased risk of death.

Not even full-fat milk.

 

Interestingly enough, when they compared people who consumed milk with those who consumed no milk, they found that people in the former group were actually 25 percent less likely to die of all causes than people in the latter group.

 

This was, however, only true for those who consumed between 120 and 160 grams of milk per day, not for those who consumed more than 200 grams per day.

The authors wanted to answer two questions: firstly, whether pet ownership, in general, could improve our cardiovascular health and, secondly, whether dog ownership, compared to the ownership of other pets, could improve our heart health.

 

To investigate this, they consulted data collected by the Kardiovize Brno 2030 study.

 

This study first collected the health and socioeconomic information of more than 2,000 people in the city of Brno, Czech Republic in 2013. It is meant to run through several follow-up visits until 2030.

 

Using the information from the 2018-2019 follow-up visit, the researchers examined the information of 1,769 of the subjects and rated them on the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7. These include body mass index, diet, physical activity, smoking status, blood pressure, blood glucose, and total cholesterol.

 

They also interviewed all these participants and asked them about their pet ownership status.

 

When comparing pet owners with non-owners, it initially seemed like pet owners had superior cardiovascular health, specifically with better diets, more physical activity, lower blood sugar, and higher HDL cholesterol.

 

But after running the numbers through the appropriate statistical measures, the researchers could not conclude that it was the pet ownership that caused better heart health, as education level and age seemed to have as big an effect on both owners and non-owners as pet ownership had.

 

They then compared dog owners with people who owned no pets and with people who owned a pet other than a dog; here, education and age did not interfere with the results.

 

Dog owners were more likely to engage in physical exercise and to eat healthy diets. They were also more likely to have a lower waist circumference and a higher HDL cholesterol score.

 

Therefore, pet ownership, in general, may not be heart-healthier than non-pet ownership, but dog ownership is certainly healthier.

They tested the cholesterol of 140 crow nestlings in and around Davis in California, in various areas, which ranged from rural to urban. They found that urban crow-chicks had higher cholesterol than their rural cousins.

 

To discover whether this was due to the processed and fatty food that humans dump and throw out for them, the researchers left McDonald’s cheeseburgers near crow nests in rural New York.

 

When they tested the cholesterol of these crows, they found that those who had fed on the burgers had higher cholesterol than those who had fed on natural food sources.

 

In fact, their cholesterol was very similar to the cholesterol of the city crows, altogether around five percent higher than that of the rural crows who ate naturally available food.

 

This, of course, doesn’t just reveal crow health. This shows how the normal junk diet most people consume directly leads to high cholesterol in humans as well as animals.

 

And this is, of course, why so many people nowadays are dying from strokes and heart attacks.

But a new study in the journal Atherosclerosis reveals that health-wise, this is a short-sighted way of looking at it.

Cholesterol travels around the body in your blood, in packages called lipoproteins. We usually talk about two types, called:

 

  1. LDL cholesterol. This is transported in low-density lipoprotein packages and is often called ‘bad’ cholesterol because it causes cardiovascular disease.

 

  1. HDL cholesterol. This circulates in high-density lipoprotein packages and is often called ‘good’ cholesterol because it transports bad cholesterol to your liver, which breaks it down for excretion.

But now there’s a third category (well, it’s actually been known about for a long time).

 

  1. Remnant cholesterol. This is transported in triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (or fat particles if this lipoprotein stuff is too much of a mouthful for you). It’s another bad type of cholesterol because it causes cardiovascular disease too.

 

Up to now, scientists have ignored remnant cholesterol too much, because they thought there wasn’t all that much of it flowing in our bloodstreams. However, the new study has made them think again.

 

It shows that it’s more abundant than was previously thought, which makes it just as much of a heart disease risk as LDL is.

 

The authors looked at medical information from 9,293 participants in the Copenhagen General Population Study. This is a survey of 140,000 people who receive free health checks, investigating the causes of good and bad health.

 

They used a new and advanced measuring tool called metabolomics to check the cholesterol levels of their subsample.

 

The new tool showed that the subjects had roughly equal amounts of LDL, HDL, and remnant cholesterol in their blood, which came as a bit of a shock.

 

Remnant cholesterol levels were the same as LDL levels, which means there was twice the amount of bad stuff as they were expecting.

 

Previous research has shown that remnant cholesterol is a serious risk for heart attack and stroke, so we need to keep our remnant cholesterol levels as low as possible.

The study, presented at the American College of Cardiology 2019 Latin America Conference was led by researchers at the Simón Bolívar University in Barranquilla, Colombia.

 

They analyzed the smartphone habits and health of 1,060 health sciences faculty students at the university. The 700 males in the study averaged 20 years of age, and the 360 females averaged 19 years of age.

 

For the girls, there was a 63.9 percent that they were overweight and a 57.4 percent chance that they were obese. For the boys, that likelihood was 36.1 percent for being overweight and 42.6 percent for obesity.

 

26 percent of the subjects that were overweight and 4.6 percent who were obese used their smartphones for more than five hours per day, and here’s the headline figure: their risk for being obese increased by 43 percent!

 

The connection here seems to be that students who spent more time on their devices were around twice as likely as their peers were to eat fast food, drink sugary sodas, and not do enough exercise.

 

This seems really surprising when you remember that the subjects were health sciences students, people who should have been more aware than most about maintaining good health.

 

And worst of all, being overweight has some dire consequences such as cholesterol plaque buildup in the arteries and high blood pressure.

Being obese is the biggest risk factor for heart disease, partly because obese people have more fat hugging their hearts. But even slim people can have fat around their heart.

 

Exercise helps in the war on fat, but what kind of exercise is best for reducing heart fat?

 

JAMA Cardiology has just published a study that answers this question.

The fat around your heart can appear in one of two places. Epicardial fat appears in the tissue closest to your heart, while pericardial fat shows up in the cavity around your heart.

 

Both types are bad for you, but more time has been spent studying epicardial fat, so we know it’s a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, high fasting glucose, and abdominal fat deposits, all of which are extremely unhealthy.

 

Pericardial fat is less well studied, but we know that it definitely contributes to atherosclerosis (which is when your arteries narrow, restricting and even cutting off blood flow).

 

The authors of the new study decided to find out whether endurance or resistance exercise was as good at reducing these harmful types of fat, as they were at reducing abdominal fat.

 

They split their 50 participants into three groups: a group that performed high-intensity interval endurance training three times a week for 45 minutes each, a group that performed resistance training three times a week for 45 minutes each, and a group that performed no exercise at all.

 

The endurance training consisted of exercise on a stationary bicycle, while the resistance group had to do weight training with medium-heavy weights.

 

Before the study, all the participants were inactive with a high body-mass index score and abdominal fat.

 

The scientists measured their cardiac fat via MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) during and after the study.

 

The endurance and resistance exercise groups reduced their epicardial fat by eight and nine grams respectively by the end of the study. The no-exercise group saw no changes.

 

The resistance exercise group reduced their pericardial fat by 34 grams, while the other two groups saw no change.

 

That’s an impressive result. It means that you should be doing some sort of exercise on a regular basis at the very least, but you shouldn’t just limit yourself to the usual ones like running and cycling.

 

Endurance work will improve your cardiorespiratory fitness, but it won’t make you stronger.

 

In comparison, resistance training will improve both, and now you know that it will reduce your dangerous heart fat too. We’d call that a pretty good return on your effort!

For those who don’t know, the paleo diet promotes foods that hunter-gatherers would have eaten more than 10,000 years ago (in the Paleolithic era—hence the name) things like fish, lean meats, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds. It forbids foods like dairy products, grains, legumes, potatoes, added sugar, salt, and processed foods.

 

The new study—carried out by researchers from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia—investigated the effect of the paleo diet on gut health, since previous studies contradicted each other on this issue.

 

They recruited 47 people who had eaten a relatively healthy diet for the previous 12 months, together with 44 people who had eaten a paleo diet for at least the previous 12 months.

 

The paleo group was divided into a strict paleolithic group that consumed less than one serving of grains and dairy per day and a pseudo-paleolithic group that consumed more than one serving of these food groups per day.

 

Unsurprisingly, they found that the paleo groups were eating more fat than the other groups and that the strict paleo group consumed the most protein. They also discovered that the paleo dieters were not short of fiber, as one may have expected, given the lack of grains and legumes on their plate.

 

Still, that wasn’t enough to save the paleo crowd, as their blood, urine, and stool samples revealed a few unsavory truths.

 

Firstly, they had much more trimethylamine-n-oxide (TMAO) in their blood than the other subjects. TMAO is a compound that’s produced in our intestines, and too much of it spells bad news.

 

Almost all the research up to now says that it’s a major heart disease risk.

The TMAO levels were highest in the strict paleo group, the people that consumed almost no grains at all, so their heart disease risk goes way up.

Avoid Stroke and Heart Attack – Shingles Increases Your Risk of These Two Deadly Conditions

 

A recently published study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology shows that people at risk of shingles are also at risk of heart attacks and strokes because of the virus that causes shingles.

 

Shingles comes from the Herpes Zoster virus. It first causes chickenpox, usually in childhood, then it bides its time, lying dormant in your body until it shows up as shingles when you’re older.

 

But how does it cause stroke and heart attack?

 

The authors of the new study used medical data relating to South Koreans. This gave researchers extensive demographic and medical information for 570,000 people.

 

519,880 of them were observed between 2003 and 2013 and in that time 23,233 were diagnosed with the Herpes Zoster virus, primarily because they developed shingles.

 

The scientists created a comparison group with selections based on demographic and medical information.

 

The shingles group suffered 1.34 more strokes per 1,000 person-years than the non-shingles group did. They also suffered 0.8 heart attacks more per 1,000 person-years than the non-shingles group did.

 

The risk was highest for people under 40 and for those who had had shingles in the past year.

 

The fact that the youngest people with few cardiovascular disease risk factors experienced the highest risk was surprising, as we would usually expect older people with clogged arteries and higher blood pressure to experience strokes and heart attacks.

 

The authors looked at previously published studies to help them suggest why shingles might increase the risk of cardiovascular problems.

 

When active, the Herpes Zoster virus can replicate right next to arteries. This causes inflammation in those arteries which, in turn, can cause them to block or burst.

 

Even when dormant, the virus is constantly reactivated at a level that causes no symptoms. When this occurs next to arteries, the same thing happens.

 

The virus tends to move through your nervous system to the center of your body, where you have the largest arteries.

 

The virus increases both your blood pressure and negative emotions.

The virus compromises your immune system, which then puts you at risk of medical problems, including cardiovascular ones.

 

This all points to why we should live healthy lifestyles. Being healthy is the best way to be ensure that your immune system is strong enough to resist the shingles virus. It tends to attack people who are older with weaker immune systems, so the healthier and stronger we can keep ourselves, the better we can resist it.

You’ll find omega-3 fats in all fish, especially mackerel, salmon, sardines, lake trout, herring, anchovy, and tuna; and in plant sources like flaxseed, chia seed, hemp oil, walnut, fresh basil, and dried oregano.

 

Most of the omega-6 fats we eat can be found in soybean oil, corn oil, grape seed oil, poppy seed oil, safflower oil, and sunflower oil. We fry in them and they’re added to almost all the packaged, canned, and partially pre-prepared products we buy too.

 

Our bodies can’t make enough to keep us healthy, so we need to get our supplies from food.

 

Lots of studies have claimed that the ratio between them is important: higher omega-6 and lower omega-3 is bad for us, they say.

 

But the authors of the new study spotted two huge flaws in these studies:

 

The first is people. We’re usually quite bad at remembering what we eat and drink.

 

The second is that we don’t always know how much of these oils is really in the foods we eat because it can vary a lot.

 

Actually, there is also a third, smaller flaw, which is that some health conditions can affect how much of these two fats the body absorbs.

 

The researchers wanted to study how Omega 3s and 6s affected health without having to worry about these questions, so they manipulated the genes of mice in different ways. They bred some that produced different amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 regardless of what they ate, and they also used a sample of normal mice for comparison.

 

The results? The mice that overproduced omega-6 compared with omega-3 had higher rates of cancer and metabolic disease. Metabolic disease includes not only diabetes, but also high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Their livers were unhealthier, and they had a lot more of the gut bacteria that cause chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a huge contributor to cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.

 

The mice who could convert omega-6 to omega-3 did not suffer from these health problems.

 

The unhealthy mice had the same omega-6 to omega-3 ratio found in the typical 21st century Western diet, which means it’s probably too blame for much of the heart disease epidemic.

 

So, the researchers actually confirmed that despite the flaws in their studies, the advice from previous research was correct.

 

Which means:

 

  1. Avoid vegetable oils and foods made with them.
  2. Eat the omega-3 sources listed above.
  3. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, as most of them contain more omega-3 than omega-6.

 

This approach will bring down your omega-6-omega-3 ratio and you’ll have a much healthier heart.

As a new study in the journal Npj Digital Medicine suggests, your smart speaker will one day be able to hear you having a heart attack and save your life by calling for help.

 

According to the American Heart Association, almost 300,000 people die in the United States every year after having heart attacks outside of hospital. At least two thirds of these happen at home, and the most common place they happen is in the bedroom.

 

The new technology hinges on the fact that the smart speaker is such a good listening device. A heart attack causes low oxygen levels that leave you gasping for air. You make a guttural sound that’s called “agonal breathing” and it tells the smart speaker very clearly that you’re in trouble.

 

University of Washington scientists got hold of 162,911 calls during which bystanders had held a phone up to an unconscious heart attack sufferer’s mouth. From these calls, they made 236 different audio clips.

 

They programmed these clips into a range of smart devices and used further machine learning techniques to expand the data set to 7,316 clips.

They then played these agonal breathing clips to smart devices to see whether they could recognize a heart attack when they heard it.

 

To make it even more challenging and realistic, the researchers played these clips at various distances from the smart devices, and with other frequently heard home sounds cluttering up the background like air-conditioning, cats, dogs, and car horns.

 

It sounds tough, but the system was well trained. Researchers collected 7,305 sound clips from sleep studies that included snoring, sleep apnea, and the like to add to what it could recognize.

 

After giving the smart devices time to learn from all those sounds, they were able to correctly identify a whopping 97 percent of heart attack cases. A phenomenal result!

 

They only made mistakes in 0.14 percent of cases, confusing sleep noises with agonal breathing.

 

But even that great result improved when the researchers changed the rules of identification slightly. As soon as it was decided that agonal breathing could only be diagnosed when the speakers heard two of the suspected breathing noises, 10 seconds apart, the results jumped to an amazing 100 percent accuracy.

 

So, how would this system work practically?

 

In the future, the service would run as an app on a smart device. It would listen to you round the clock and when triggered it would sound the alarm for someone else in the house to come and help you, or it could even dial emergency services if you were alone.

 

This service is still a long way from becoming widely available, but the researchers are serious about bringing it to the market someday.

 

Before that can happen though, they need to work on expanding their database of heart attack sounds so that they can train the system to become more accurate.

Clear Out Your 93% Cholesterol Clogged Arteries – Stroke Caused By This Widespread New Work Trend

 

We spend at least a third of our lives at work, so scientists have always been interested in the effects of work on our health.

 

The journal Stroke has just published a study that explores the health effects of how we work.

 

And the results are terrifying!

 

Eight hours a day seems like the average answer you’d expect to hear from most people, but it’s a number that’s fluctuated over time. Ancient societies worked no more than three hours per day, while the industrial revolution saw factory workers putting in up to 15-hour shifts, up to six days a week.

 

Workers in the second half of the 20th century worked around eight hours, but recent trends towards self-employment, contract work, and gig employment are pushing it back over 10 hours.

 

Stroke is one of the most severe health events a person can suffer from, so the researchers were interested to know if long work hours could make them more likely.

 

They looked at a French population-based study, called CONSTANCES, for information on people’s working hours, cardiovascular risk factors, smoking status, occupation, age, and sex.

 

They excluded people with part-time jobs and those who had had strokes before they had worked their long hours.

 

Altogether, they found 143,592 study subjects, of whom 1,224 had suffered strokes.

 

29 percent of them had worked long hours, which meant 10 hours a day for at least 50 days of the year, and 10 percent worked those long hours for 10 years or more.

 

Researchers found that people who worked long hours had a 29 percent higher risk of stroke, while those who worked long hours for 10 years or more had a 45 percent higher risk of stroke.

 

This means that working 10 hours or more for one day a week can increase your stroke risk by 29 percent, while doing so for 10 years can raise it by 45 percent.

 

For workers under 50 years of age and for white-collar workers, the association between working long hours over a 10-year period and experiencing stroke was especially strong.

 

After looking at previous studies, the researchers thought that some of this effect might be due to the stresses and strains of certain jobs.

 

Obviously, more time spent doing something stressful is…more stressful.

But the fact that white-collar workers and people under 50 were especially at risk did come as a surprise to them.

 

That’s because previous studies have shown that some white-collar workers (like business owners, managers and some other professionals) actually have a lower risk of health problems when they work longer hours, because they have more control over what they do.

 

These matters, because autonomy has often been linked to lower stress levels, but this study doesn’t seem to agree.

 

Perhaps more research needs to be done to separate out all of the factors in work that can overload people with stress, but what’s clear is that you can reduce your stroke risk by not having a 10-hour work day once a week.

 

That may be easier said than done of course. You can’t just tell your boss, “I’m not coming in today because I’m busy avoiding a stroke,” but you can start planning for a change if it looks like this job is going to work you into the ground.

But a new study in the journal PLOS Medicine reveals that one of the best ways to have good heart health as an adult is to do one important thing right as a child.

 

Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University wondered whether childhood education could affect our heart health as adults.

 

To find out, they cast their eyes over the records of children born between 1900 and 1950 in different American states.

 

For those who don’t know, different American states have different rules for how many years their kids must spend in school. Some make them stay until age 18, while others let them leave as soon as they hit 14.

 

The reasons for this are historical. Between 1900 and 1950, with two world wars and an economic depression affecting priorities somewhat, some states realized that compulsory education had to take a backseat, so they set no age requirements at all.

 

The researchers included people born in different states between 1900 and 1950, because 33 percent of all children failed to finish high school during this period. This gave them a nice big sample to work with.

 

They identified 44,732 people from the 1971–2012 waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and 30,853 people from the 1992–2012 waves of the Health and Retirement Study.

 

For all these people, the researchers gathered lifestyle and health information, including cardiovascular conditions, and some other health markers.

 

Once they had crunched all the numbers, they found that for every single additional year of compulsory childhood education there was a 2.5 percent lower risk of people getting heart disease as adults.

 

In real terms that means that staying in school until age 18 gives you a 10 percent lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease than leaving school at 14.

 

But why should this be so? Other findings shed some light on this question.

 

Firstly, people born in states with longer compulsory schooling were 3.6 percent less likely to smoke than the “early leaver” states.

 

They were also 4.9 percent less likely to have depression, 3.9 percent less likely to have high triglycerides (blood fats) and 50 percent more likely to have high HDL cholesterol, which is often called healthy cholesterol.

 

Researchers think there might be a few reasons for this. They think that people with more years spent in high school end up being better educated, so they get better jobs and can afford better food and healthcare. They can then afford a better quality of life and don’t experience the stresses and strains that come from having less money.

 

All of these things may contribute to their lower risk of heart disease.

Changes in the blood vessels of the retina are a giveaway for high blood pressure, because the changes they can see in the eye are the same changes that happen in the brain. So, the eye can give doctors an early warning system.

 

In the study, people with high blood pressure were followed for more than 13 years and researchers labelled effects on their eyes (called hypertensive retinopathy) as severe, mild, or none.

 

People with severe retinopathy had a 137% higher risk of having a stroke than those with none. Mild retinopathy meant they were 35% more likely to suffer from a stroke.

 

This looks really promising, but it’s still early days. More research is needed to backup these conclusions.

The Syracuse University academics used 63 workers who were eligible for paid vacations. They invited them into the laboratory where they conducted a range of physiological measures to assess their metabolic status.

 

Together with the physiological tests, they also asked them about their vacation behavior in the last 12 months.

 

These participants had taken five vacations during the past 12 months, using two weeks of their paid vacation days.

 

The more vacations they took, the fewer harmful metabolic symptoms they showed. Each additional vacation reduced their risk for the metabolic syndrome by 25 percent.

 

We should probably define what metabolic syndrome is. It’s said to be present if you have three of these four symptoms: large waist circumference, high blood pressure, high triglycerides (fats in the blood), and high fasting blood sugar levels.

 

These are also major risks for cardiovascular disease and events like heart attacks and strokes.

 

It isn’t known exactly why vacations have such a positive effect, but the results make it clear that they really do.

 

Any change to compulsory vacation time will probably be a long time coming, so until it does, you had better take charge of your health!

Cholesterol Drugs Can Triple Your Risk of This Serious Disease

These drugs are the most commonly prescribed drugs for high cholesterol. They’re so common that researchers think more than a quarter of middle-aged Americans are taking them.

 

But a new study by scientists at Ohio State University in Columbus now suggests that these drugs may be largely responsible for the current diabetes epidemic.

 

The researchers checked the health records of 4,683 adults who had private health insurance. They were free of diabetes when the study began in 2011, but they had already received warnings about their risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers followed them until 2014 to see which of them would develop diabetes.

 

Their average age was 46 years and 16 percent of them had been prescribed statins during the study period.

 

It turned out that statin-takers were 2.2 times more likely to develop diabetes than non-statin-takers.

 

Those who had taken statins for more than two years had a 3.3 times greater chance of developing diabetes compared with those who never took statins.

 

Even statin-takers who never developed diabetes were in trouble, with a 6.5 percent higher chance of high blood sugar than those who had never taken statins. This suggests that if this study had continued for longer, they may eventually have been at serious risk of diabetes too.

 

Pause and think about this for a moment. This study already shows that two years of statin-taking can triple your risk of diabetes, but because it was stopped at three years, and since even nondiabetic statin-takers had high blood sugar, even this number is probably too low.

 

It’s clear that the longer the participants took statins for, the greater their risk of developing diabetes, so the researchers knew that statins were causing it.

 

They ruled out interference from other factors like ethnicity, sex, age, and body mass index, so it was clear that the new diabetes cases were caused by the statins, and not by any of these other factors.

 

They couldn’t rule out alcohol use and smoking, so that’s worth bearing in mind, but the link does appear to be strong despite this.

 

This study again shows why it is far better to adopt natural methods to combat cholesterol. There is, after all, no point in fighting heart disease if that means it causes diabetes. You’re just swapping one deadly illness for another.

Cutting Down Your Cholesterol Level – Sitting and Heart Health

 

There are lots of good reasons to sit down these days, and unfortunately for our hearts one of them is good television. There’s just so much of it!

But if you’re also sitting for hours at a desk job too then you’re getting a double dose of badness.

 

Sitting down for too long has been shown by many studies to be bad for your heart health, but the latest one on the subject now reveals that one of these reasons to sit is worse for you than the other.

 

The new study appears in the Journal of the American Heart Association and it was authored by researchers from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York City.

 

They were curious about how sitting affects our hearts. Were couch potatoes going to have more heart problems than desk jockeys at work or fewer?

 

Luckily, they didn’t have to set up a study of their own because the information they were after was already available.

 

The Jackson Heart Study had previously looked at a whole host of health issues in 3,592 African American people from Jackson, Mississippi.

 

Participants had filled in questionnaires that told researchers about how much or how little physical activity they generally did.

 

As part of this they kept a record of their television viewing time, and also time spent sitting at work, two figures which were gold for the present researchers.

 

They were able to divide the television viewers into five groups, on a scale that went from least to most time spent watching. Some people watched less than one hour per week while at the other extreme some of them watched more than four hours every day.

 

The researchers also did the same for the workers. They divided them into those who said that they sat down “never”, “seldom”, “sometimes”, “often”, or “always”.

 

Their physical activity was measured in terms of how much exercise they got each week and how intense it was.

 

It’s worth noting that the study didn’t just take a snapshot. It ran for 8.5 years, so we can be pretty sure that all the data gathered is a true representation of these people’s behavior.

 

The findings were interesting. People who sat watching television for four or more hours per day had a 49 percent higher risk of cardiovascular disease and early death than folks who watched for two or fewer hours per day. So, no big surprise there then.

 

What did come as a surprise was that the people who sat at work showed quite different results. Those who reported that they sat “always” or “often” at work were no more likely to have cardiovascular problems or die prematurely than those were who reported “never” sitting at work or “seldom” sitting.

 

So why was sitting down to watch TV worse for their health than sitting down at work? The thinking is that television watchers might be more likely to sit for long periods without being interrupted, while some desk workers may get more opportunities to move around, like when they visit a co-worker or fetch files, for example.

 

It’s also more likely that television watchers will eat a big meal before they sit down and once they’ve put their feet up the potato chips and other unhealthy snacks often come out too.

 

That’s not something that office workers would generally be doing, so perhaps the food component helps to explain why there wasn’t any variation in consequences between the different frequencies of workplace sitting.

 

Not all sit-down jobs are healthy, of course. Truck drivers can’t move around and may end up eating more than they should just to relieve the boredom of the road.

 

But the good news from the study is that moderate or vigorous physical activity for 150 minutes per week eliminated the heart disease risk for everyone. Even the people who watched television for four or more hours per week cut their chances of heart trouble to zero if they also exercised for those three and a half hours a week.

 

The chief takeaway from this is that moderate or vigorous exercise can take away a lot of the health risks from your next box set binge.

Cutting Down Your Cholesterol Level – Drink This Juice to Lower Cholesterol

Tomato juice is great at reducing both cholesterol and blood pressure, so researchers wanted to test how great.

 

Researchers recruited 184 men and 297 women. A few suffered from high cholesterol and 94 had hypertension or pre-hypertension. Their average ages were 56.3 and 58.4 years respectively.

 

For a year, these participants were given as much unsalted tomato juice to drink as they wanted, but it doesn’t look like they were exactly clamoring for the stuff, because the average participant only got through about one cup a day.

 

But maybe they should have been guzzling it, because after one year of chugging tomato juice, their systolic blood pressure had dropped from 141.2 to 137.0 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) and their diastolic pressure from 83.3 to 80.9 mmHg. Those are averages, so they don’t show the even better news – that the people who started out with the highest blood pressure saw the biggest reductions.

 

125 of the participants had high cholesterol or high blood fats. Their LDL cholesterol, which is the bad stuff that poses the greatest heart disease risk, dropped from 155 to 149.9 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter).

 

You might be thinking that these reductions don’t seem very impressive, but they are when you remember what caused them: drinking just one cup of tomato juice every day.

 

Also, they didn’t find any reduction in blood glucose, nor changes in HDL cholesterol (the good type) and triglycerides (blood fats), so it seems the effects were limited to reducing bad cholesterol.

 

To be sure that tomato juice alone was the cause of their dramatic drop, the scientists had them fill out a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the study to make sure that nothing else about their lifestyles could have affected the outcome, so we know that the results are watertight.

 

This was the second time that this research team had looked at the effects of tomato juice. They also performed a 2015 study to see tomato juice might affect menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women, and they also happened to test their cholesterol as part of that.

 

In this one, they asked their 93 subjects to drink 200ml of tomato juice twice a day for eight weeks. This is a bit less than two cups per day.

Afterwards, 22 of the women with high triglycerides saw them drop substantially, and the ones with the highest scores at the start enjoyed the biggest falls.

 

Before you get too excited, the one big limitation in this study is that they didn’t gather enough detailed information about what the participants ate. This means we can’t know if the tomato juice was used to replace something unhealthy. If it replaced something sugary then that change alone might have been responsible for the health benefits, and not the tomato juice itself, but let’s not forget that the results are consistent with other studies, so it’s probably safe to assume that tomato juice really is that good for you!

Lower Your Cholesterol Quickly and Easily – Do Eggs Raise Cholesterol Levels?

 

Eggs of one sort or another are a firm favorite that show up in a lot of people’s breakfasts, but how many times have you heard people tell you that eating eggs will raise your cholesterol?

 

Science hasn’t completely settled the debate yet, but a new contribution to the topic has just been published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

 

For this piece, researchers from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and Northwestern University looked back over large studies that recorded the diets, lifestyles, and cardiovascular diseases of 29,615 people. These people had an average age of 51.6 years and they were followed for an average of 17.5 Years.

 

When the researchers separated out daily cholesterol consumption, daily egg consumption, cardiovascular events, and deaths from the rest of the data, they found some interesting points:

 

The first 300 mg (milligrams) of cholesterol consumed per day has no measurable harmful effects on health.

 

Beyond the first 300 mg of daily cholesterol, every additional 300 mg increases our risk of a cardiovascular event like stroke or heart attack by 17 percent and our chance of death by 18 percent.

 

Beyond the first 300 mg of daily cholesterol, each half an egg increases our risk of a cardiovascular event by six percent and our risk of death by eight percent.

 

To unpick all of that, it doesn’t mean that you have to avoid eggs. In fact, it shows that eggs are fine in moderation, but how much is that exactly?

 

One egg, or one egg yolk to be more precise, contains 200 mg of cholesterol, which is about the same amount as you’ll find in a large steak.

 

This means that if you eat a large steak and an egg every day, together with the milk in your tea or coffee, you will be over the 300 mg safe limit.

 

But if you eat three eggs and three large steaks per week, and spread them out, your cholesterol intake will be below it.

 

Past research has actually shown that daily cholesterol intake doesn’t raise our cholesterol to harmful levels, which is why the American and British governments don’t recommend a daily cholesterol limit.

 

The reason why eggs (and meats for that matter) become unhealthy is probably because they have to be cooked to improve flavor and reduce the risk of Salmonella.

 

But when you heat cholesterol, its chemical composition changes in a process called oxidation. It is this oxidized cholesterol that clogs your arteries, not uncooked cholesterol.

 

So, don’t stop eating eggs just yet. They contain calcium, fiber, iron, potassium, zinc, selenium, B vitamins, vitamin A and other healthy nutrients, so if you keep your consumption under control, your favorite breakfast food can still be a heart-healthy addition to your day.

To test the common assumption, they found 113 healthy volunteers aged from 21 to 65 who had a body-mass index between 20 and 35 kg/m2 (which puts some in the normal range, some at overweight and some at obese).

 

They split them into two groups: a high saturated fat group and a low saturated fat group.

 

Within each of these groups, the volunteers first consumed their proteins in the form of red meat (but none of it processed, like bacon or sausage) for four weeks, and then white meat (but no fish) for four weeks. For the final four weeks they ate no meats, but had vegetables and dairy instead.

 

The study doesn’t mention whether the cuts included skins, but we’re assuming they did.

 

Before, during, and after the study, the scientists measured their subject’s total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol (usually called bad cholesterol) to see which diet was the worst.

 

It should come as no surprise that the high saturated fat dieters had a higher LDL cholesterol level than the low saturated fat dieters.

 

And the ones who got their proteins from plants and a bit of dairy had lower LDL levels than those who ate meat.

 

Now, you might have been expecting a higher LDL cholesterol score for the red meat eaters and a lower score for the poultry fans, but that didn’t happen.

 

Cholesterol-wise, there was nothing to choose between them.

 

This means that if you want to lower your bad cholesterol, you could try getting your proteins from vegetables and dairy instead of meat. If you really want to eat meat, then it doesn’t seem to matter whether it came from something winged or something hoofed. One’s no worse for than the other, so long as it’s ‘real’ meat and hasn’t been processed.

 

If you’ve read our cholesterol program, these findings should not surprise you too much. Both red and white meat (especially the skins) contain cholesterol, and they both need to be cooked before consumption. That means the cholesterol in both will undergo some oxidation during the heating process.

 

This explains why both meat protein groups had higher LDL cholesterol than the vegetable protein group. It also explains why the high saturated fat group had more LDL cholesterol than the low saturated fat group had, since saturated fat is consumed almost exclusively in the form of meat that needs to be cooked.

 

Still, when delving deep into the study, the conclusion is not seriously alarming. In previous studies, small LDL cholesterol particles have been found to be far more harmful than large LDL particles were. Large LDL particles pose a coronary heart disease risk, but it’s smaller than the risk you get with small LDL particles.

 

In this study, the cholesterol differences between the high and low saturated fat groups and between the meat and vegetable groups were mostly in large LDL particles.

 

This suggests that meat consumption increases a type of cholesterol that is harmful, but not the most harmful.

Lower Your Cholesterol Quickly and Easily – The Simplest Way to Avoid Millions of Deaths

 

If you believed everything you read in the news, then you might tend to worry that war, terrorism, natural disasters, murder or road traffic accidents were all trying their best to kill you.

 

Every day the headlines are full of dire warnings, but if newsmakers were really serious about telling you what to avoid, then the headlines would be totally different.

 

They’d focus on something else completely, because more people die of this one thing than all of that other stuff.

 

More people are dying of broken hearts, because cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the world today.

 

But it needn’t be this way. War might be difficult to avoid sometimes but for most people, cardiovascular disease certainly isn’t.

 

Tufts University scientists presented a new study at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting in Baltimore claiming that the simplest way to cut millions of these deaths worldwide is to just eat more fruit and vegetables. Wait, what?

 

How did they come to this conclusion?

 

They looked at a lot of information for the year 2010 about diets and deaths in 13 countries, all in all representing 82 percent of the world’s population.

 

They found that inadequate fruit consumption caused 521,395 coronary heart disease deaths, which means deaths caused by arteries that got clogged up with fat, cholesterol, or blood clots. It also caused 1,255,978 deaths by stroke.

 

Low vegetable consumption (including legumes) resulted in 809,425 coronary heart disease deaths and 210,849 stroke deaths.

 

It’s no surprise that given their large populations and relative rates of poverty, China and India had the most cardiovascular deaths related to low fruit and vegetable intakes at 541,564 and 199,364 yearly deaths respectively.

 

Putting this together, worldwide, inadequate intake of fruit lead to almost 1.8 million annual cardiovascular deaths while low vegetable intake was responsible for around 1 million annual deaths.

 

A different research team did the same thing for the year 2015 with 195 countries. They used similar diet surveys, cause-of-death records, and studies on the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and cardiovascular disease.

 

They calculated the number of healthy years that were lost to heart disease-related disability or death related to inadequate fruit and vegetable intake.

 

It transpired that low fruit consumption was the cause of a staggering 57.3 million lost years while low vegetable consumption accounted for 44.6 million lost years.

 

Despite the overall unhealthiness of the typical Western diet in the United States and Europe, both these studies showed that people there still ate more fruit and vegetables than those in the poorest countries and suffered from fewer heart disease-related deaths because of low fruit and vegetable consumption.

 

The simple conclusion you get from these studies is that if you eat more of what your grandma recommends then you live longer. The researchers put the level of adequate fruit intake at 300 grams per day (about two small apples) and adequate vegetable intake at 400 grams daily (about three cups of raw carrots).

 

It’s a lot cheaper and simpler than getting drugs and surgery later, and it might even make you feel better every day too!

 

This is the risk factor for heart disease and early death that is the easiest and cheapest to avoid, so just eat more fruit and vegetables if you’d like a long life.
