That was the question asked in a new study that was published in the journal Heart.

 

And the answer is: it depends on who you are!

 

To check whether this statement was true, they identified 32,367 people with CAD (coronary artery disease) from the Clarify registry of patients with a stable CAD. These people originated from 45 countries and had their information collected between 2009 and 2010.

 

They were observed for an average of five years to see which of them would have a major, adverse cardiovascular event, and this included stroke, heart attack, and cardiovascular death.

 

People with stable CAD are people whose arteries were narrowed or clogged with cholesterol but who did not have any trouble with them for the last few months.

 

Among the participants, 11.3 percent lived alone.

 

When they calculated the chance of a major cardiovascular event, they found that there was no difference between those who lived alone and those who cohabited.

 

But that was not the most interesting find.

 

Men who lived alone were 17 percent more likely to suffer from a cardiovascular event than men who lived with others.

 

From this, the scientists speculated that men who used to be married and lived with their spouses lacked the coping mechanisms and social support outside the home that women tended to have.

 

On the other hand, women who lived alone tended to have a slightly smaller chance of a cardiovascular event than women who cohabited with others.

 

The researchers again speculated that it may have been because of the fact that married women still had a tendency to take on the lion’s share of responsibilities around the home, causing some stress that single dwelling women can avoid.

High protein diets have become extremely popular as of late.

But what types of protein is the best, especially if you are going to eat a large amount of it?

 

Two new studies put this question to a test and revealed a surprising winner. In fact, this might completely change how most people do their Keto.

 

In the first study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which was not strictly related to cardiovascular disease, Finnish scientists wanted to know whether people who consumed their proteins in animal form were more likely to die of diseases than those who consumed plant proteins. These diseases included cardiovascular diseases, along with diabetes and cancer.

 

They identified the details of 2,641 Finnish men that had already been collected by the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. These men were all between aged between 42 and 60 at the beginning of the study and their information included a dietary register.

 

The researchers also collected records pertaining to disease-caused deaths from the National Causes of Death Register.

 

After observing the participants for an average of 22 years, they found that red meat eaters were more likely to die of diseases than people who avoided this protein form.

 

  1. Those who ate meat were 23 percent more likely to die than those who ate the least.

 

  1. Those who ate a larger quantity of red meat relative compared to plant proteins were 23 percent more likely to die than those who ate the most plant proteins relative to red meat.

 

  1. Fish, eggs, and dairy did not increase their disease-caused death risk.

 

In general, people who ate the highest amount of protein were 17 percent more likely to die than those who ate the lowest amount of it.

 

The second study, published in the journal Circulation, was an overview of published studies.

 

They found 36 studies that compared the effects of different types of diets on cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides (blood fats).

 

They divided the diets according to the source of protein: red meat, poultry and fish, fish only, poultry only, mixed animal (meat and dairy), plant proteins (legumes, soy, nuts), carbohydrates (mostly low-quality refined ones), and the usual mixed diet.

 

The findings are as follows:

 

  1. Compared with all the other diets combined, red meat eaters had the same cholesterol, but higher triglycerides.

 

  1. Compared with red meat eaters, plant protein eaters experienced a larger drop in total cholesterol and LDL (unhealthy) cholesterol.

 

  1. Compared with fish eaters, red meat eaters had a larger drop in both LDL (unhealthy) and HDL (healthy) cholesterol, thus making it a mixed blessing.

 

  1. Compared with carbohydrate eaters, red meat eaters had a healthier cholesterol and blood fat profile.

 

Both studies clearly prove that vegetable protein (nuts, soy, and legumes) is the healthiest for your heart.

 

So, if you’re going for a high protein diet, load up on nuts, legumes and a limited amount of soy instead of taking meat – especially red meat.

It’s a well-researched fact that stress raises blood pressure. But what about other cardiovascular factors, such as strokes and heart attacks?

A team of Swedish scientists decided to study further regarding that question.

 

And consequently, it was found that stress worsened all types of cardiovascular health. However, it was surprising to note that most of the timings were wrong.

 

The researchers used various Swedish population registers to identify 136,637 people diagnosed with stress disorders between 1987 and 2013, 171,314 of their siblings without such disorders, and 1,366,370 people from the general population who were unaffected by a stress disorder.

 

The study included the siblings because they needed to exclude the possibility that genes rather than stress disorders were responsible for cardiovascular disease.

 

The stress disorders studied included post-traumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, adjustment disorder, and other stress reactions.

 

They consulted the Swedish National Patient Register to check which of these people ended up developing cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease (narrowed arteries), cerebrovascular disease (affecting the blood supply to the brain), emboli/thrombosis (blocked blood vessels or blood clots), hypertensive diseases, heart failure, and arrhythmia/conduction disorder (irregular heartbeat).

 

Conclusion:

 

People affected by stress disorder were 64 percent more likely than their unaffected siblings and 71 percent more likely than other unaffected individuals to develop heart disease in the first year after their diagnoses with a stress disorder.

 

More than a year after the stress diagnoses, these percentages dropped to 29 and 36 percent, showing that the effect of stress was especially serious during the first year (so that’s what we meant by the timing being wrong).

 

They also concluded that post-traumatic stress disorder had a stronger effect on heart health than other stress-related disorders.

 

The person’s sex, family history of cardiovascular disease, history of psychological disorders, and co-occurring psychological disorders, such as depression had no influence on the findings.

 

This suggests that you should take especially good care of your heart after an extremely traumatic event like a violent attack, rape, a serious car accident, or a natural disaster.

 

It also shows how important it is to give yourself a break after such an event to practice as many relaxation techniques as you can fit into your daily schedule.

 

But stress does not just include emotional stress. It can also be physical (diseases), sensual (constant traffic noise), and mental (long-lasting mental task). All these factors can increase your stress hormone level and your risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Cure Cholesterol and Heal Heart – Lowering Cholesterol INCREASES Stroke Risk 220%

 

According to a new study published in the journal Neurology, the myth about high cholesterol has probably murdered millions of people.

 

In fact, lowering your cholesterol to the recommended level of 100 mg/dL can increase your risk of having the most dangerous type of stroke by a frightening 220%.

 

The researchers mined data from the Women’s Health Study that included the records of 27,937 women aged 45 and up.

 

At the beginning of the study, these women had their total cholesterol, their LDL cholesterol, their HDL cholesterol, and their triglycerides (blood fats) measured.

 

The scientists observed them over an average of 19 years to see which of them suffered from a haemorrhagic stroke.

 

Strokes come in two forms: ischemic, which occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked by, for example, clogged blood vessels, and haemorrhagic, which happens when there is bleeding in the brain because of, for example, blood vessels that have burst or are weakened and leak.

A haemorrhagic stroke is much harder to treat than an ischemic one.

 

According to the National Stroke Association, while haemorrhagic strokes only constitute 13 percent of all strokes, they are responsible for 40 percent of stroke-related deaths.

 

When the researchers compared women with LDL cholesterol of 70 mg/dL or lower with those with an LDL level between 100 and 130 mg/dL, they found that members of the former group were 2.2 times more likely to have a haemorrhagic stroke than members of the latter group.

 

This was still true after they excluded people with other stroke risks, such as high blood pressure, old age, smoking, and so forth.

 

But it wasn’t only LDL cholesterol that was a risk, and it was found that low triglycerides were equally bad.

 

Those with the lowest fasting triglyceride levels (74 mg/dL or lower) were twice as likely to have a haemorrhagic stroke as those with the highest fasting levels (156 mg/dL or higher).

 

Total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol, often called good cholesterol, had no effect on stroke incidents.

 

This study is alarming because it shows that official cholesterol recommendations are just too low. It also shows the dangers of lowering cholesterol artificially through the use of statins and other cholesterol-lowering medications.

Cure Cholesterol and Heal Heart – This Healthy Fat Causes Heart Attacks in the Elderly

 

For decades, we have been told to load up on this “healthy” fat (and avoid trans-fat and saturated fat).

 

And while this may be okay advice for people under the ages of 50, a new study published in the FASEB Journal has shown that if you’re older than that, you need to be very careful.

 

This is as this fat destroys your immune system and leads directly to stroke and heart attack.

 

The researchers split their mice into young and old categories, with the range being approximately two months versus 18 months old.

 

They gave all of them a high omega-6 vegetable oil diet and then triggered heart attacks or other heart-injuring events to see how their bodies would respond.

 

Examples of high omega-6 oils include sunflower and safflower oils, both oils that are frequently used for cooking.

 

As expected, the young mice had a tendency to survive these adverse heart events while the older ones often died.

 

And they investigated the mice, they found that the bacterial profiles in their intestines had changed completely.

 

Both the old and young mice had some factors in common:

 

Specifically, they developed a lot more bacteria from the phylum Firmicutes group, a type of bacteria that has previously been associated with obesity, diabetes, and system-wide inflammation.

 

On top of that, both groups experienced a huge increase in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that is natively a part of the immune system.

 

That was the end of the similarities, however.

 

There is another type of white blood cell used by the immune system is called leukocytes, and the spleen is normally a rich reservoir of these leukocytes.

 

When our hearts are injured by heart attacks or other terrible heart events, our spleens release these leukocytes that then rush to our hearts to repair the tissue and manage the inflammation at the injury site.

 

While this is what happened to the young mice in this study, this mechanism did not work with the old mice.

 

The two types of white immune blood cells, neutrophils and leukocytes, thus need to be carefully balanced for our immune systems to work properly.

 

But in the case of the old mice, the increase in neutrophils caused by the high-fat diet completely overwhelmed the leukocytes, leaving the latter incapable of doing their job in repairing the heart.

 

They also found that the old mice had structural deformities in their spleens.

 

In other words, during the point in which the inflammation was increased by high fat intake, intestinal phylum Firmicutes, and heart injury, the spleens of the old mice were impaired and could not release enough leukocytes to resolve the inflammation.

 

Medical scientists call this a non-resolving inflammation and it is ultimately the cause of heart failure.

 

If this study applies to humans too, then it shows why old people should pay even more attention to eating less omega-6 vegetable oils than young people, as their bodies might simply not repair heart damage if it occurs.

The theory behind this assertion is that cholesterol will go from the food into your bloodstream, where it adds to the blood cholesterol and packs up in your heart arteries.

 

But this is not what happens at all. In fact, there is a little process that is occurring in your guts that may be the main reason for your high cholesterol level.

 

Countries where people have traditionally eaten whole grains and consumed relatively little oil are increasingly moving towards a Westernized diet that contains a large amount of processed grains and vegetable oils.

 

Scientists have just published a study in the journal Gut that investigated the effects of this dietary change on our intestinal bacteria.

 

We have billions of bacteria in our intestines, and some of these have been found to be healthy, while others have been associated with obesity and illnesses.

 

The scientists divided 217 Chinese adults between the ages of 18 and 35 into three groups by gradually increasing the amount of fat in their diets through the primary use of soybean oil, white rice, and flour. As such, they were split into a low, medium, and high Westernized diet.

 

They observed these diets for six months and had blood and fecal samples taken at the beginning and the end of the study to test for gut bacteria and signs of inflammation.

 

The first change they noticed was in the healthy gut bacteria, called Fecali bacteria, the bacteria responsible for producing short-chain fatty acids, like butyrate. These increased in the low-fat group while decreasing in the high-fat group. It is to be noted that previous studies found that this bacteria had anti-inflammatory effects.

 

The Blautia family of bacteria, previously associated with healthy cholesterol levels, were abundant in the low-fat dieters while scarce in the high-fat dieters.

 

The Bacteroide family, previously found to be linked with high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes, were abundant in the high-fat consumers and scarce in the low-fat consumers.

 

The low-fat dieters had lower levels of the metabolites p-cresol and indole, formally linked with metabolic disorders like diabetes.

 

The high-fat dieters also had more inflammatory chemicals in their blood than the low-fat dieters had.

 

It is important to remember that the scientists increased refined grains along with fats in the diets of the high-fat group, which unsurprisingly suggests that they were too unhealthy.

 

Furthermore, soybean oil was used to increase the fat content of the high-fat diet. Soybean oil is one of the most harmful omega-6 polyunsaturated oils available, and some researchers think it is single-handedly responsible for our high cholesterol levels.

 

This is as it appears in almost all pre-made, prepackaged foods, it is abundant in our diets, and is almost impossible to avoid, unless you shun pre-made food in favor of fresh food.

Prevent Cholesterol Buildup in Arteries – The Most Harmful Cholesterol Discovered (not LDL or HDL)

 

You have heard of LDL – the so-called “bad cholesterol”. And HDL – often called “good cholesterol”.

 

And then we, of course, have Triglycerides.

 

But there is a third type of cholesterol, one that you probably have never even heard of. And this type was found to be the most dangerous type by far.

 

Ironically, this third type of cholesterol is also the one easiest to eliminate.

 

This new discovery by the University of Illinois was presented at the 63rd Biophysical Society Annual Meeting.

 

The researchers divided their mice into two groups: one group that received a well-balanced diet and the other that received a diet based on the number of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins that can be found in a typical fast-food meal.

 

Unsurprisingly, researchers quickly observed a thickening of the arteries of the unhealthy eaters.

 

This damage did not occur only to the arterial walls, but all the way down to the individual cells that made up the arterial walls.

 

They then measured the amount of LDL cholesterol and oxidized cholesterol in the arteries of these mice so that they could inject the same amounts into human arterial cells in a laboratorial setting to see what would happen.

 

Just like oil that is placed on the shelf for too long and starts to smell, oxidized cholesterol is basically cholesterol that has become rancid.

 

After applying these to human cells, they observed the same as in the mice: a thickening and hardening of arterial membranes.

 

Like in the mice, the damage occurred all the way down to the individual cells from which the arteries were constituted.

 

The oxidized cholesterol did a lot more damage than the LDL cholesterol. Even scarier, it only took a tiny amount of oxidized cholesterol to do substantial damage.

 

The value of this study lies in the three following findings:

 

  1. Oxidized cholesterol is more harmful than LDL cholesterol.
  2. The arterial damage that causes the thickening and hardening of arteries goes down to the cellular level.
  3. When LDL and oxidized cholesterol appear together, the damage is the greatest.

Prevent Cholesterol Buildup in Arteries – Is Your High Cholesterol Putting Your Kids At Hidden Risk?

 

If you have high cholesterol, chances are that it’s indirectly putting your children at immediate extreme risk.

 

This is true even if they’re in their 20s, 30, or 40s and have no sign of cardiovascular diseases.

 

It’s because your high cholesterol could be a sign of a family disease, one that you’ve already beaten yourself.

 

Hereditary high cholesterol is a condition called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). It is caused by a fault on chromosome 19 that compromises your body’s ability to remove LDL cholesterol from your blood vessels.

 

Unfortunately, it has no symptoms that are obviously noticeable, so many families do not realize that they have it.

 

Norwegian researchers wondered about the risk that this condition poses for heart attack and coronary heart disease and decided to find out by analyzing information from thousands of people with FH.

 

They identified 3,071 people with FH who had not had a prior heart attack and 2,795 people with the condition who did not have coronary heart disease.

 

They matched these people with a sample from the general population that approximately match them in age, so they could compare people with and without hereditary cholesterol.

 

They then examined Norwegian hospitalization records between 2000 and 2009 to compare how many people in each group were hospitalized with heart attack or coronary heart disease.

 

Interestingly, by age 70, people with FH were no more likely than those without it to suffer heart attack or coronary heart disease events, but from age 55 downward, they were at a much greater risk than the general population.

 

In fact, those with FH who had the greatest risk compared with the general population were people between ages 25 and 39, the youngest group studied here.

 

Across the board, for all ages, the risk for women was worse than for men, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies.

 

This means that it is incredibly important to diagnose familial hypercholesterolemia as early as possible so that it can be treated immediately.

 

This is because, for these people, it is simply not good enough to wait until they are in their 30s before they start controlling their cholesterol, as it is then already too late.

 

If this condition runs in the family, the cholesterol levels of children must be controlled from the moment they start walking.

 

So, if you know of several people in your family who experienced cardiovascular events before age 55, you might want a doctor to test you and your children for FH.

Prevent Heart Attack and Stroke – Why You Don’t Exercise Enough (it’s not your fault)

 

Most of us should be more active. In fact, 3-5 hours of intense activity per week is minimal, and every hour awake should include a little moving around.

 

But sometimes you just don’t feel like you have the energy, do you?

And according to a new study published in the journal Circulation, it’s all because of a hidden additive that food companies add to almost all the food you consume.

 

It robs you of physical energy, prevents you from exercising and therefore causes high cholesterol, blood pressure, overweight, type 2 diabetes and a row of other health issues.

 

Lots of dairy, meat, and vegetables contain phosphate, and that is healthy because it helps your body build bones, helps with muscle contraction, and facilitates nerve function.

 

But one of the most common food additives in our modern diet is inorganic phosphate, and that sends our daily phosphate intake into the stratosphere.

 

When scientists fed mice a high-phosphate diet, they observed that they could no longer produce enough fatty acids to feed their muscles. They spent less time on their treadmills and had lower cardiovascular fitness levels.

 

They also found genetic changes in these mice when they were fed high-phosphate diets over a long period of time. After 12 weeks, levels for the genes responsible for muscle metabolism had changed in their bloodstreams.

 

Since studies on mice are not always translatable to human beings, they tried to address this question by analyzing data from participants in the Dallas Heart Study, where their food consumption was recorded and who were asked to wear physical activity monitors for seven days.

 

It turned out that those with the highest blood phosphate levels exercised the least, while those with the lowest phosphate levels exercised the most, suggesting that it has the same effect on people as the mice.

 

Most food manufacturers add phosphate to food to prevent it from spoiling and to enhance flavor. Cola and other soft drinks, sausages and other processed meats, baked products, and canned products are the most likely to contain it.

 

Any “phos” on labels is suspect, such as dicalcium phosphate, monopotassium phosphate, sodium hexameta-phosphate, phosphoric acid, sodium tripolyphosphate, and so forth.

 

The easiest way to avoid inorganic phosphate, however, is to bypass processed food as much as possible.

A new research by Harvard University has proven that eating a handful or two of certain specific nuts significantly lowers the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the bad one) and Triglyceride (blood fat) present in your body.

 

What’s more, this same nut has been proven to reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke by 37%.

 

A team led by Harvard University researchers has now reviewed studies that included 26 trials and 1,059 subjects on walnuts.

 

The subjects included healthy volunteers, as well as people with high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Some of the participants were overweight or obese, while others were at their ideal weight.

 

In all the studies, the subjects were on a wide variety of diets, including Mediterranean, low-fat, conventional American, or traditional Japanese diet.

 

Across the various studies, walnuts represented between five to 24% of the subject’s daily calorie intake.

Compared to all these other diets, people on walnut-enriched diets experienced:

 

1.A 3.25% reduction in total cholesterol,
2. A 3.73% reduction in LDL cholesterol (normally called bad cholesterol), and
3. A 5.52% reduction in Triglyceride (blood fat) concentrations.

 

Even better, when compared solely against the typical American/European diet, the participants on the walnut-enriched diets lost around 6% of their total cholesterol and about 5.5% of LDL cholesterol.

 

Despite walnuts being found to be high in fats and calories, the study found that eating them did not lead to weight gain.

 

What’s more, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2006 found that those who ate walnuts at least four times per week had a 37% lower risk of developing clogged arteries, and therefore reduced their chances of a stroke and heart attack.

But a new study from New Zealand that was published in Lancet found one ingredient that you can’t have too much of when eating for optimal health.

 

In fact, those who ate most of it were up to 30% less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases and 24% less likely to suffer heart diseases, strokes, type-2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer.

 

Best of all, this ingredient is dirt cheap and available in every supermarket.

 

Scientists consulted previously published studies and selected 243 with the strongest scientific standards.

 

From these, they found that people who ate the most fiber were 15 to 30 percent less likely to die prematurely of any cause, of cardiovascular disease, and of stroke as compared to those who ate the least fiber.

 

Compared with the lowest fiber consumers, the highest consumers were also 16 to 24 percent less likely to suffer from coronary heart diseases, strokes, type-2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer.

 

They were also found to have lower body weight, blood pressures, and cholesterol than those who mostly avoided fiber.

 

The authors stipulated that anything below 25 grams per day was too little, and that between 25 and 29 grams was ideal.

 

But they did not find any level of consumption where the health benefits stopped accumulating, which meant that you would be doing no wrong if you ate more than 30 grams per day.

The scientists reviewed 358 surveys from 168 countries, with a total of 1.9 million people. The countries on which the surveys were based contained 96% of the world’s population.

 

These are the trends they discovered:

 

  1. 27.5% of the world’s adults do not exercise at all.
  2. Women were less active than men, with 32% of women and 23% of men being completely inactive. This inequality was the highest in central and South Asia and in the Middle East and North Africa.
  3. People in higher average income countries were less likely to exercise than people in lower average income countries. 37% of people in high-income countries, 26% of those in middle-income countries, and 16% of those in low-income countries are physically inactive, partly because people in higher income countries do sedentary work while people in lower-income countries are more likely to do manual physical work.
  4. Regionally speaking, the highest level of inactivity was found in Latin America and the Caribbean (39%), high-income Western countries (37%), and high-income Asian countries (36%).
  5. Within each country, the activity levels varied according to the characteristics of specific areas, and this included the availability of community sports programs, the availability of gyms and other exercise programs, the presence of nature walks close to the cities, and the structure of the road networks.
  6. Economic development and urbanization, as clearly seen in China and Brazil, directly led to lower physical activity and poorer health.

They published their findings in the Games for Health Journal.

 

They consulted eight previous studies between 2008 and 2017.

 

The studies differed in many ways, such as the number of participants (11 to 144), the social support or supervision offered (trained support and supervision or none), the location of the games (subject’s homes, clinics, or other research sites), and the structure of the games.

 

In two studies, players played Nintendo Wii Sports games like tennis, bowling, baseball, golf, and boxing in their homes; the hope being that they will then start playing those sports in real life after getting a taste of them in the game.

 

Another study made them play Nintendo Wii boxing and canoeing games and added a real-life exercise session twice a week.

 

A further study used Nintendo Wii gym games, such as rhythm boxing, obstacle course runs, free runs, hula-hoop, and stepping games. This study combined the games with real supervised exercise session in a physical therapy clinic.

 

In addition to these, other studies involved interactive games with avatar doctors in virtual medical clinics, goal-setting tablet apps, a casino slot game with health content, and a game in which they received advice and were then monitored remotely through a sensor to note their compliance.

 

These studies showed that 70% of participants stuck with their programs right to the end, which was a much higher rate than those seen in traditional cardiac rehabilitation programs.

 

The studies that examined physical exercise found that there was an improvement in the amount of physical exercise their subjects engaged in and the amount of energy used, a finding that could be beneficial for heart disease prevention and management.
