Slow the Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease – This Food Causes Alzheimer’s

A study in the latest edition of Scientific Reports, written by researchers at the University of Bath and King’s College London, now proposes a mechanism through which one specific type of food causes Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately, it’s a food that is everywhere as an additive or by itself. It’s known by many names, as attempts to disguise its presence in ingredient lists are crafty.

Sugar molecules inside your body have this nasty habit of binding to protein and fat molecules. When this binding is controlled by enzymes, it’s normal and harmless.

But when this binding happens without the involvement of enzymes, scientists call it glycation, which can be harmful.

During the process of glycation, protein and fat cells can be damaged, and harmful advanced glycation end products can be released that can damage other cells even further.

None of this is new knowledge, but researchers never quite understood how glycation led to Alzheimer’s.

The Bath and London scientists studied brain samples of people with and without Alzheimer’s. They discovered that at the beginning of the disease, glycation damaged an enzyme called MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor).

This MIF enzyme is part of your immune system. When proteins start building up in your brain, as happens at the beginning of Alzheimer’s, MIF is supposed to stimulate other brain cells, called glia, to deal with this abnormal protein buildup.

But because glycation suppresses MIF, this process cannot get going, thereby allowing Alzheimer’s to proceed undisturbed.

In other words, your immune system has a mechanism to combat the changes that lead to this disease, but excessive sugar intake kills this mechanism.

We often wonder why our immune systems are so feeble and cannot protect us against cancer, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, and other widespread 21st-century ailments.

But this study shows that our immune systems are a lot better than we think—but they need a bit of help from us in the form of a reasonably healthy diet.

Be on the lookout for added sugar in your foods: sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, and other names. Checking the carbohydrate content is the best way to see whether you’re eating excessive amounts of sugar.

There are common drugs that everyone takes at some point.

And for a long time, doctors have been recommending them to fight off dementia and prevent stroke.

However, the journal Neurology has just issued a stark warning – this drug does not act against dementia and may actually cause stroke.

Previous medical advice about Aspirin was it was good for our hearts. Some scientists had claimed that it benefited brain health by reducing inflammation and dissolving small blood clots by keeping blood vessels open.

But using Aspirin for this purpose comes with a huge risk.

It can also cause unnecessary dangerous bleeding in the brain because of the thinning of our blood and the preventing blood clotting.

Researchers identified 19,114 people who had neither dementia nor heart disease at the beginning of the study. They followed and observed them for 7 years.

They gave half the participants a low dose of 100 milligrams of Aspirin per day, while the other half were given placebos.

At the beginning of and throughout the study participants were given tests to measure their thinking and memory.

By the end of the study, they had found no difference between the Aspirin and placebo takers in developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. They also found no difference in the rate of cognitive decline between the two groups.

People around age 70 have weaker blood vessels than younger people, which is presumably true of the blood vessels in their brains too.

This makes it all the more important that their blood can clot effectively when there are small ruptures in tiny blood vessels in their brains. If this cannot happen, the chances of them suffering from a catastrophic stroke is far greater.

An excess of cholesterol wreaks havoc in our blood vessels, and researchers have now discovered it causes Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Canadian researchers examined the brains of patients who had died of Alzheimer’s disease, finding that Alzheimer’s brains contained significantly more cholesterol than non-Alzheimer’s brains.

But that’s only half the story… They also discovered that Alzheimer’s brains and healthy brains do very different things with cholesterol.

And this may hold the key to finally cure Alzheimer’s.

The Canadian team found that Alzheimer’s brains retained cholesterol while healthy brains metabolized it. This study appeared in the journal Neurobiology of Disease.

A few years later, a different team published a study in Molecular Neurodegeneration in which they actually demonstrated what happened to neurons when they loaded cholesterol into their membranes.

These neurons immediately started resembling and behaving like neurons in Alzheimer’s brains.

Compared to non-Alzheimer’s neurons, Different genes were turned on and off, the transport of proteins in those neurons were blocked, and they secreted a lot more amyloid-beta42, a protein that appears in large amounts in Alzheimer’s brains.

But at present researchers still don’t understand the exact role that cholesterol plays in the development of the disease.

Until exact cause and effect relationships can be proven, it’s best to drop cholesterol to healthy levels.

Every time we read “new” Alzheimer’s research, it’s just the same old thing. It focuses on the genetic factors and doesn’t tell us anything new.

Little if any attention has been paid to the connection between Alzheimer’s and the lifestyle choices we make, especially diet ones.

But recent research from scientists from the University of Bath and King’s College has found one common ingredient that has been holding Alzheimer’s hostage and even helping it manifest.

Researchers examined samples of brain matter of people with and without Alzheimer’s to reveal the damage high blood sugar causes proteins and immune cells.

When sugar (or glucose) reaches your bloodstream, many of its molecules bind to protein molecules in a process called glycation.

Not only can glycation damage proteins, the by-products of the glycation process like beta-amyloid that causes brain plaque buildup are also harmful. This suggests that too much dietary sugar contributes to Alzheimer’s.

But researchers also discovered another extremely harmful effect of glycation – at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease – it damages an enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor (or MIF).

MIF enzymes are a part of your immune system. When abnormal proteins start to build up in your brain, MIF enzymes are supposed to help remove them and/or limit potential damage. But when damaged, they can’t prevent abnormal protein plaque buildup of the brain, which is how the disease gets going.

In short, if you eat too many simple sugars that build up as glucose in your bloodstream, glycation becomes likelier, putting you more at risk from Alzheimer’s.

Occasionally scientists stumble onto information that is promising not only for people who suffer from diseases, but also for those who just enjoy good food.

A recent study concluded that some genuinely tasty foods may be able to control Alzheimer’s disease even better than drugs.

If you enjoy researching natural health topics and following a naturally healthy lifestyle, you have probably heard of polyphenols, the chemicals found in red wine, red grapes, berries, and several other food types. They are powerful antioxidants, which explains why naturopaths recommend them so liberally.

An increasing number of researchers have become interested in the ability of one of these polyphenols to prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It is called resveratrol, and is a prominent ingredient in red wine, red grapes, pomegranate, dark chocolate, peanuts, and soybeans.

In September 2015, Neurology distributed an article in which a team of American researchers demonstrated that resveratrol might be an effective Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Researchers divided 119 Alzheimer’s patients into groups that either received resveratrol or a placebo. The resveratrol group started with 500 mg per day, escalated by 500 mg every 13 weeks, for an eventual total of 2 g per day.

By the end of the year, the resveratrol group had approximately the same levels of amyloid-beta40 (Abeta40) in their blood and cerebrospinal fluid as at the beginning of the experiment. The placebo group, on the other hand, had substantially lower levels, an effect that usually accompanies the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

An MRI scan also revealed that the swelling of the brains of the resveratrol subjects had diminished considerably.

While some participants complained of nausea, diarrhea, and weight loss, resveratrol was relatively free of side effects.

The authors warned that they had used a special pharmaceutical-grade resveratrol and claimed that you would have to drink about 1,000 bottles of wine to obtain the same amount. For that reason, together with their relatively small number of participants, they advised that their findings should be further tested, rather than immediately acted upon.

The way in which resveratrol manages dementia is still being researched.

A team at Oregon’s Health and Science University reviewed the literature in the journal Brain Research Reviews, and concluded that resveratrol activated sirtuin proteins, which also happen to be activated by low calorie diets.


These proteins have been shown to protect the brain cells of mice with Huntington’s disease, a disease that causes dementia and the degeneration of brain cells.

Another study by researchers at the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease has established that resveratrol does not inhibit the production of Abeta, but rather promotes its intercellular degradation. In other words, resveratrol kills the Abeta between cells, instead of allowing it to form plaque inside them.

Pure resveratrol supplements are available from natural health stores, and you can further stack your diet with the foods that contain it. Who knows, altogether you might manage to obtain enough of it to protect your brain cells from age-related decline.

We know nuts are good for the health.

They are packed with nutritional fiber, a plethora of healthy antioxidants, and numerous anti-inflammatory substances.

But maybe most importantly, a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found this one nut to slow down the progression of dementia in at-risk seniors.

Researchers used 636 participants aged between 63 and 79 from California and Barcelona. At the beginning of the study they were declared cognitively healthy.

The researchers divided them into two groups – one received between 30 and 60 grams of walnuts per day – the other consumed none.

They administered neurocognitive tests before the study and then again after two years. The 108 participants in Barcelona were also given frequent brain MRI scans.

When they compared the groups, they found no difference between the cognitive functions.

But their findings revealed some other interesting things.

Smokers in the walnut-eating group displayed a slower cognitive decline than smokers in the non-eating walnut group.

In addition, people who started the study with lower than average neuropsychological test scores also benefited from walnut consumption.

This implies that walnuts make little difference to people who are cognitively normal or healthy, but it shows they can help those who are most at risk of developing dementia.

Stop and Reverse Dementia and Memory Loss – These Easy Mental Games Bring Dementia to a Halt

Scientists from the Kumon Institute of Education and Tokyo’s Keio University have just revealed that a specific learning therapy can stop the progression of dementia in its tracks.

Unlike other “preventing” methods, this one seems to work even after the onset of dementia.

Their subjects were 57 seniors housed in nursing and care facilities in Japan.

Between July 2015 and July 2016, they gave 30 of these people a course of learning therapy, consisting of the answering of easy reading and mathematical calculation questions for five days a week.

The other 27, called the control group, received no therapy at all.

To track their progress, the researchers used the standard Japanese scale that is used to rate seniors from one to five according to the amount of nursing care they require.

By the end of the year, the condition of the participants who received the learning therapy showed almost no change, while the condition of those who received nothing deteriorated at the expected rate.

The leading researcher in the study described this type of brain stimulation as an example of a non-pharmaceutical treatment that worked.

He also expressed his satisfaction at discovering a dementia treatment that was substantially cheaper than drugs.

The January 2016 edition of the journal Current Opinion in Psychiatry included an interesting, but alarming, article on the cause of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

It seems like a simple activity, most of us just take as a normal part of life slowly and sneakily kills your brain function until nothing is left.

The good news is, this can be reversed if caught in time.

Scientists at the Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest Health Sciences, conducted a review of previously published studies and found that most of them backed the idea that stress could lead to depression and dementia.

According to scientists, stress affects the same parts of the brain as short-term fear and anxiety do. It causes the amygdala to become overactive while simultaneously suppressing the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex.

What does this mean?

The amygdala is the part of your brain that is most strongly associated with emotions. This is the part that becomes active when you are afraid or, as we are now learning, when you are stressed for a long period of time.

Your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex are the parts of your brain where most of your logical thinking takes place. When you are extremely emotional, these thinking centers become under active and take a back seat to the amygdala.

The problem during long lasting stress periods is that your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex are under active for years.

This causes the cells to degrade, making them less capable of the thinking operations for which they are responsible.

Think of your muscles. If you want them to be strong, you have to use them. The same holds for your hippocampus and your prefrontal cortex.

The new review of existing studies revealed that these thinking centers in the brains of people who suffer from chronic stress are smaller and physically different from those in the brains of people who live without such stress.

The biggest problem is that long-lasting stress in the past can affect your brain today. So if you were under a lot of stress in your 40s that’s now gone, your brain is still suffering.

The good news is you can workout your brain today to reverse this process. Doing word-puzzles, Sudoku, learn a language or juggle balls have all been shown to boost brain health.

Vitamin and mineral supplements can be great and are often highly regarded alternative health treatments recommended by doctors.

 

But sometimes supplements can do more harm than good.

 

This, according to a research team from University of Gothenburg, is true for one of the world’s most popular and recommended supplements on the market.

 

In fact, this one supplement can double your risk of dementia!

 

In 2001, 700 dementia-free women aged 70-92 were recruited, 98 of whom had been taking calcium supplements.

 

Comprehensive physical and neuropsychiatric examinations were carried out at the beginning of the study in 2001 and then at the end in 2006.

 

By the end of the study, 14.3 percent of the supplement takers had developed dementia, compared to only 7.5 percent of non-takers.

 

Alarmingly, this seems to suggest that calcium supplements could double your risk of developing dementia.

 

However, when they analyzed their data further, they realized this applied only to women who had previously had a stroke, and to women who had some other cerebrovascular disease.

 

Cerebrovascular diseases include all conditions that affect blood flow to the brain, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

 

So, instead of reaching for supplements, you can increase your calcium intake by consuming calcium-rich food   (such as vegetables) and beverages.

 

Together with these foods, make sure you have a good supply of vitamin D, as your body needs it to absorb the calcium.

Many recent studies have indicated that chemical compounds in marijuana are able to reduce our risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

 

Now, just to remind us that medical science is an ongoing conversation and thereby a work in progress, a new study in the journal Alzheimer’s Disease suggests that marijuana may actually affect the brain in ways that may cause Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists from the Amen Clinic did functional neuroimaging scans on the brains of 982 marijuana users and 92 non-users to compare the amount of blood that flows through them both while performing a concentration task and while at rest.

 

Several areas of the brains of the marijuana users, most notably the hippocampus, showed markedly less blood flow than the brains of the non-users.

 

The hippocampus is one of the most important parts of your brain. It is responsible for both short-term and long-term memory, and for spatial coding, which refers to your ability to map and remember physical spaces like your home or street or, mind you, the shapes of letters or buttonholes on your clothes. These are the first areas of the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers that start to shrink.

 

That is why people afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease have such poor memories, become easily disoriented, and need help to dress and feed themselves.

 

In this new study, the right hippocampus suffered the worst reduction in blood flow.

 

Interestingly, many of the study participants were former marijuana smokers who had given it up years before the brain scans. In other words, if these researchers are right, marijuana does permanent damage to cerebral blood flow that does not reverse when you stop smoking it.

  1. Reduced blood flow damages the white matter that your brain needs to think, feel, and control other operations in your body.

 

  1. Reduced blood flow may also lead to Alzheimer’s disease by ruining your brain’s ability to control the amount of beta amyloid that is present. Excess beta amyloid then forms plaques and tangles, which are the chief characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease.

Eight researchers from various American universities have just published a groundbreaking study showing that a very common and popular drink can completely prevent dementia from developing.

Researchers identified 6,467 post-menopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study who reported consuming some caffeine could help prevent (and even reverse) dementia. The information included the amount of coffee, tea, or cola they drank.

 

The data also included the results of annual assessments of their cognitive function, taken over a period of 10 years or less.

 

During this period, 388 women were diagnosed with some level of cognitive impairment or dementia.

 

After comparing the participant’s dementia diagnoses with their caffeine intake, they concluded that the women who consumed only a little caffeine every day were 36 percent more likely to suffer from dementia or some level of cognitive impairment than those who consumed a lot.

 

Those who developed dementia or cognitive difficulties drank an average of 64mg of caffeine per day, while those who remained cognitively fully functional consumed 261mg of it.

 

261mg of daily caffeine equals two to three cups of coffee or five to six cups of black tea. The cups should be normal cup-size (approximately eight ounces or 250 milliliters).

 

Seven to eight cans of cola have a similar amount of caffeine, but I don’t recommend that due to its unhealthy sugar content.

 

The researchers were happy with their findings because consuming caffeine is so easy and, at these levels anyway, without side effects.

It was true across co-morbidities like high blood pressure and diabetes as well, showing previous studies might have errantly targeted high blood pressure or diabetes as a cause in acceleration of brain atrophy, instead of being additional health issues caused by a bigger problem.

 

The scientists concluded either the totality of the Mediterranean diet is responsible for benefits of lowering blood pressure and healthier minds, or that some other specific ingredient lies behind it.

 

The Mediterranean diet consists primarily of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, fish, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Poultry, meat, and dairy are eaten in smaller amounts.

 

Compare this with the normal diet followed in most industrialized Western countries that contains plenty of meat, dairy, processed rather than whole grains, huge quantities of processed vegetable oils, and sugar, and only small and infrequent portions of vegetables.

The three new studies all demonstrate that activation of these type 2 cannabinoid receptors can treat Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

 

Study 1: Alzheimer’s Reversed.

 

In the first, published in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, Indian researchers tested the ability of 1-phenylisatin, a type 2 cannabinoid receptor agonist, to ameliorate the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

They first induced Alzheimer’s disease in rats, after which they verified that the rodent’s memories were indeed compromised by observing their efforts to learn the route through a maze.

 

The researchers then gave the rodents the 1-phenylisatin, which activated the rodent’s type 2 cannabinoid receptors. The researcher’s subsequent tests revealed that the rat’s memories and executive function improved, that the oxidative stress in their brains reversed, and that the progressive physical brain damage halted and even reversed.

 

Study 2: Vascular Dementia Reversed.

 

In the second study, published in the journal Current Neurovascular Research, scientists targeted vascular dementia, the second most common form of dementia, behind Alzheimer’s disease.

 

They tried to attack the chronic cerebral hypoperfusion that gives rise to vascular dementia. Vascular dementia occurs when there is an insufficient blood supply to the brain, and chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is a condition wherein blood supply to the brain is inadequate.

 

Once again, the researchers induced chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in rats to cut off the blood supply to their brains. This was soon followed by vascular dementia, which they again verified through maze memory tests and executive function, or decision-making, tests, which the rats predictably failed.

 

The researchers then injected the rats with 1-phenylisatin to stimulate their cannabinoid receptors. As with the Alzheimer’s disease sufferers in the first study, the rat’s memories and executive function improved, and there was also a significant reduction in the physical and chemical brain damage brought about by the disease.

 

Study 3: Advanced Alzheimer’s Reversed.

 

Researchers in the third study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, actually administered THC and CBD, the two main components of cannabis, to mice with dementia. They expected that it would reverse memory loss for mice with early dementia but possibly not for mice with advanced dementia.

 

They were pleasantly surprised to find that it did improve the memory of the mice with advanced dementia too, even though it could not reverse as much of the physical brain damage as it could for the mice with early-stage dementia.

 

There are just two problems:

 

1) Cannabis is illegal in most places in the world.

2) You may not want to get high on cannabis.

They collected health information from participants in the “90+” study, a study initiated in 2003 to investigate the “oldest-old” with the aim of improving the quality of life of those over the age of 90.

 

Scientists were able to determine which seniors over 90 were the most likely to develop dementia.

 

They discovered that those who developed high blood pressure in their 60s or before were likely to suffer from dementia later on. That should not be surprising.

 

But they also found that, compared to those with normal blood pressure:

– Those whose blood pressure increased during their 80s were 42% less likely to develop dementia during their 90s.

 

– Those whose blood pressure increased when they were over the age of 90 were 63% less likely to develop dementia.

 

So the conclusion is: if you’re in your eighties, and your blood pressure has been normal till now but is rising, this is probably a good thing. And you should not be put on hypertensive drugs.

Researchers from all over Canada came together and published an article in the prestigious British Journal, Lancet, revealing that a surprising environmental factor significantly increases your risk of developing dementia.

 

They concluded that an alarming 7-11% of all dementia cases could be attributed to this specific nuisance.

 

Can it be that eliminating this environmental factor could drop your risk of developing dementia by 7-11%? The authors of the study have found evidence to suggest just that.

 

The Canadian researchers started from the evidence of previous studies that show that living near traffic noise can have a seriously detrimental effect on our cognition.

 

For example, in 2005 researchers found that British, Dutch, and Spanish kids whose schools were close to airports and busy roads performed worse on reading comprehension and recognition memory than other children. This study also appeared in the Lancet.

 

Another study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health in 2016 concluded that increases in traffic noise volume led to a decline in people’s ability to complete tasks that required memory and executive function.

 

Executive function is scientist’s term for reasoning, memory, problem solving, planning, and other cognitive processes that help you plan and control your behavior.

 

Motivated by these studies, the Canadian researchers wondered whether people who lived near traffic noise were more likely to develop dementia, since dementia is essentially a deterioration in cognitive function.

 

Studying medical records of over 6 million people, they looked at incidence of dementia spectrum diseases and also proximity to busy roads.

 

Over these 11 years, 243,611 people were diagnosed with dementia, with those residing near traffic noise being more likely than those further away.

 

Compared to those living the furthest from major roads (at least one kilometer away), those who lived within 50 meters had a seven percent larger risk of developing dementia, a number that decreased to four percent for those between 50 and 100 meters, and two percent for those between 101 and 200 meters.

Simply put, if your brain doesn’t receive enough blood, then it doesn’t work as well.

 

Exercise is one of the best ways to increase cerebral blood flow—which is why there’s a new study about it in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise—but which sort is best?

 

Previous research seems to show that continuous exercise is better than interval exercise at increasing cerebral blood flow.

 

But what if you’re older and can’t manage a continuous 30 or 40 minutes of exercise anymore?

 

Does that mean you have to do just give up on the benefits of increased cerebral blood flow?

 

There is another approach called interval training, where you alternate between bouts of exercise and bouts of rest. But there isn’t much research available at the moment to say if it increases cerebral blood flow in the elderly to help them avoid dementia, so this is a gap in the research that the authors of the new study decided to fill.

 

They recruited 11 young volunteers with an average age of 25 and 10 older participants with an average age of 69.

 

All the subjects were male. They asked them to do some continuous cycling and some interval cycling.

 

The continuous training consisted of 10 minute’s cycling followed by 10 minute’s rest.

 

The interval training consisted of 10 separate one-minute bouts of cycling, interspersed with 10 separate one-minute periods of rest.

 

Both groups had to exercise at around 60 percent of their maximum intensity, making it a reasonable program that wouldn’t be too strenuous for older people.

 

During the exercise periods, they found that cerebral blood flow was higher during continuous than during interval exercise, but only in the younger participants.

 

When they included both the exercise and rest periods in their analysis, they discovered that cerebral blood flow was actually higher for the interval than for the continuous exercise group, for both young and old volunteers.

 

In other words, interval training is better than continuous exercise at promoting cerebral blood flow for all ages.

 

But there is one exercise the scientists didn’t test, because it isn’t really an exercise. This (non) exercises is specifically designed to load your brain with oxygen and prevent – even reverse – dementia…

According to a new study presented at the American Physiological Society annual meeting at Experimental Biology 2018 in San Diego, one common ingredient can drastically improve your cognitive function.

 

And unlike drugs, it has no side effects and is completely free in most places.

 

In the study, recreational cyclists with an average age of 55 who had entered a large cycling event on a hot day with temperatures between 78 and 86°F were used.

 

They asked these cyclists to complete a trail-making executive function test as quickly and accurately as possible before and after the event.

 

The test involved the linking of numbered dots using a pencil and served as a measure of executive function, a psychological term for the ability to focus, retrieve needed information accurately from memory, and to plan and carry out steps to fulfil a goal.

 

Before the vent began, the scientists tested the cyclist’s urine to be able to categorize them into a group that was normally hydrated and one that was dehydrated.

 

Compared to their pre-cycling test, the normally hydrated group completed the post-cycling test a lot faster.

 

The dehydrated group, on the other hand, showed no improvement.

This shows that the elderly and those in their upper middle ages can reap cognitive benefits from exercise, but only if they are hydrated properly.

 

Older studies have found that, if you are dehydrated by only 2%, you will do poorer than usual on tasks that require attention, psychomotor abilities, short-term memory and fast retrieval.

 

In addition, you will struggle to form an accurate assessment of your own physical and emotional environment.

 

According to the literature, long-term memory, working memory, and executive function start deteriorating only when we are more than 2% dehydrated.

 

In other words, to stave off dementia and keep your brain functioning at optimal levels, drink a glass of water at least every two hours and drink more while you exercise.

Traditional Alzheimer’s research is mostly focused on genetic factors. Little notice is unfortunately paid to diet and other lifestyle choices.

Scientists from University of Bath and King’s College in London recently discovered one specific ingredient that plants the seeds for Alzheimer’s. They also mapped the exact process by which this bad diet choice helps the disease grow.

 

Even more urgently, cutting out this ingredient may eliminate Alzheimer’s for good.

 

Researchers examined samples of brain matter from people with and without Alzheimer’s via a technique (fluorescent phenylboronate gel electrophoresis) that is sensitive enough to reveal the damage high blood sugar causes to proteins and immune cells.

 

When sugar (or glucose) riches your bloodstream, many of its molecules bind to protein molecules in a process called glycation.

 

Not only can glycation damage proteins in this way, but the by-products of the glycation process are often harmful to our bodies as well.

Some previous studies, such as one published by German and Australian researchers in the journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta in 1997, have found that beta-amyloid, one of the proteins that seem to form plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease sufferers, are mostly a by-product created during the process of glycation.

 

That already suggests that an excess of dietary sugar can contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, as it makes glycation more likely.

 

But the London and Bath researchers discovered another extremely harmful effect of glycation.

 

At the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, glycation damages an enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor (or MIF).

 

MIF enzymes are a part of your immune system. When abnormal proteins start to build up in your brain, these MIF enzymes are supposed to be part of the response to remove them and/or to limit the potential damage.

 

This is how Alzheimer’s disease manages to get going. Glycation damages your MIF enzymes, and your damaged MIF enzymes are then incapable of playing their role of preventing abnormal protein plaques to form all over your brain.

 

In other words, if you eat too many simple sugars that build up as glucose in your bloodstream, glycation becomes more likely.

When glycation occurs in your brain, you are at serious risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
