This High-Carb Food Can Drop Diabetics’ Blood Sugar

For decades, type-2 diabetics have been told to avoid high-carbohydrate foods. After all, it’s been proven to spike blood sugar levels.

Scientists even made an index called the glycemic index to rank foods you should eat and avoid.

But a new study in the journal Clinical Nutrition now challenges this view. In fact, it found that one of the highest glycemic index foods actually lowered blood sugar if the blood sugar was tested properly.

The research team, led by scientists from the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne, noticed three things about the glycemic index that made them suspicious and caused them to question its use as a guide to food consumption for diabetics.

1. Most previous studies that place food on the glycemic index were performed in the morning, when blood glucose tends to be at its lowest after a night without food.

2. Most such studies had tested foods consumed in isolation from other foods, but that’s not the way people typically eat. We eat mixed meals composed of various foods.

3. Most studies had used nonclinical cohorts, meaning that nothing was known about the subjects’ typical blood glucose responses and medical histories. Many subjects were tested on only one food type, leaving nothing or no one to compare them with.

To remedy these three flaws, the scientists recruited 25 subjects with an average age of 58.3 years. They had all been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, and they had an average body mass index of 31.7 kg/m2. All of the subjects had their diabetes under control.

The researchers divided the participants into four groups that were all given the same breakfast and lunch (25 and 35% of daily energy intake, respectively). The participants then received a supper with 50% carbohydrates, 30% fat, and 20% proteins.

But the suppers differed in one respect. It included either one boiled potato, one roasted potato, one boiled potato cooled for 24 hours, or basmati rice. All of the potatoes were skinless.

If you know your glycemic index, you know that rice is low on the index, while potatoes are high.

The scientists collected their subjects’ blood before the meal, immediately after the meal, and four more times every 30 minutes.

They also asked them to wear a continuous glucose monitor to check their glucose throughout the night.

They reached two interesting conclusions:

1. The subjects’ blood glucose did not differ just after the meal, regardless of whether they had the low-GI basmati rice or the high-GI potatoes.

2. The blood glucose of the subjects who ate the potatoes as part of their evening meal was lower during the night than the glucose of those who ate the basmati rice.

If this finding can be confirmed by future research, it is incredibly important, because it shows that a high-GI food is perfectly safe for type-2 diabetics if it is consumed as part of a healthy meal.

It would mean that the glycemic index is not the right tool to advise diabetics or others on what to eat as components of mixed-food meals. It is only appropriate to tell them what to eat or avoid in isolation.

1) Refined Sugars and High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup is even worse. Not just because of its chemical structure but also because it’s so cheap that it’s snuck into almost everything. If you look at a graph for increase in high fructose corn syrup consumption and new type 2 diabetes cases since 1980, you’ll see two almost parallel lines.

However, just because HFCS is getting really bad press, don’t forget that sugar is sugar; and sugar is one of the main causes of inflammation no matter what form it’s in (white, brown, raw, organic, fruit sugars etc.).

If you want something sweet, go for whole fruits. Even dry fruits that are high in calories are much better for you because of the amount of fiber that slows down digestion. Organic honey in moderation is also very healthy.

2) Dairy Products

Contrary to what we’ve been told since toddlerhood, milk is NOT healthy for most people. Studies have shown that up to 60% of people cannot digest cow’s milk properly. A milk allergy is one of the most common, but least recognized allergies. Eating food that you can’t digest triggers inflammation.

Many studies, including one from China by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, have revealed dairy as one of the biggest contributors to almost all modern health issues, including cancer. They’ve also shown there are no calcium benefits to drinking milk. To the contrary; milk can rob your bones of calcium. Many of these studies have, however, been buried using billions of dollars from the dairy industry.

Due to increased awareness of milk allergies and popularity of vegan diets, there are now several great alternatives to milk available in supermarkets. These include organic soy milk, almond milk, rice milk and more. Different people like different things, so try them all out and see what you like.

3) Common Cooking Oils

One of the biggest triggers of inflammation is imbalance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 fat in your diet. Consuming fish, flax seed and other oil high in Omega 3 is not only recommended because Omega 3 is healthier than Omega 6; it’s more because Omega 6 is more available and we tend to consume more Omega 6.

So you can either eat a whole lot of Omega 3 fats or try to avoid some of the Omega 6. And one of the biggest sources of Omega 6 fats comes from common cooking oils such as grape seed, cottonseed, safflower, corn, and sunflower oils.

These oils are used in high amounts in almost all take out and prepared foods. If it’s oily (and even if it’s not) assume it was cooked in oil that is high in Omega 6, low Omega 3 fatty acids.

To balance our Omega 6/Omega 3 consumption, we want to avoid most cheap vegetable oils mentioned before and use instead macadamia oil, extra virgin olive oil, or other oils with more favorable Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids ratio.

You should also be aware of both Saturated and Trans-fats in high doses. Here again, the name of the fat is not as important as where it comes from.

Organic grass-fed beef can be high in both trans- and saturated fat. However, I’ve not seen a single study indicating that fat from this source is in any way bad for you. Consume, however, fats with the same name from fast food sources and processed, prepared food… and be ready to call the ambulance.

4) Refined Grains

Highly refined grains such as white flour and white rice are little better than refined sugars. They spike your blood sugar levels and play with your hormones and enzymes. Because of how quickly these refined grains are metabolized into the body, they’re also a highway to obesity.

Your body transfers refined grains into blood sugar 15 times faster than whole grain. That means that a 300 calorie bowl of white pasta will be in your blood stream in 10 minutes spiking your blood sugar level, transferring into fat and causing inflammation all over the body. The same calorie bowl of whole grain pasta takes more than two hours to settle into our blood stream, gently energizing every cell in your body.

So instead of white flour and rice I suggest you try various, delicious types of whole grains and whole rice. Not only are they healthier, they also taste much better. Be wary when you buy bread, cereal and other premade food. The package and ads may say “whole grain bread” or “made with whole grain,” but when you read the label, often the first ingredient is white flour or sugar.

5) Flavorings and Other Chemicals

I hesitated on whether or not I should actually include this last section. After all, we’re not really talking about foods. However, all kinds of chemicals are so widely used as ingredients and food processing that I couldn’t leave it out.

Your immune system is skeptical of anything it doesn’t recognize or can’t digest. Most flavorings, preservatives and other chemicals used in food can’t be digested. Therefore, when those chemicals reach the bloodstream, they trigger inflammation responses in the immune system. This inflammation response transfers all over the body, causing chronic inflammation.

The best line of defense is to avoid processed foods as much as you can. Almost any type of food that has five or more ingredients includes some kind of chemicals. Don’t be fooled by products including “natural flavorings,” as these can be just as bad as artificial flavors.

Unfortunately, many whole foods today are treated in one way or another with chemicals. Almost all apples and many other fruits sold in supermarkets are, for example, treated with chemicals that inhibit the natural hormone that ripens the fruits. Animals are loaded with drugs and chemicals before slaughtering.

The only way you can (almost) know for sure you’re getting a chemical-free product is if it’s 100% organic.

They were then followed for an average of 9.4 years so the researchers could compare the health consequences for those who felt job insecure with those who did not.

19 percent more of those with poor job security developed diabetes in subsequent years than their job secure peers did.

When the scientists excluded the studies that did not properly eliminate socioeconomic status, age, sex, weight, physical activity levels, alcohol use, and smoking as possible contributing factors, they still found that those who worried about losing their jobs were 12 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who had no such concerns.

While the cells injected with a complete cocoa extract and with oligomeric or polymeric procyanidin-rich extract showed no improvement in function, those treated with a monomeric catechin-rich extract immediately started producing more insulin.

To verify their findings, they fed this monomeric catechin compound to rats on a high-fat diet and compared them with rats not given this substance.

The treated rats had lower blood sugar levels and were less obese than the untreated ones… despite the bad diet.

There are a few problems with simply eating cocoa, however.

1. When they used a complete cocoa extract, it failed to work, which probably means that the amount required to stimulate your beta cells is higher than you can obtain when eating cocoa or cocoa chocolate. It was only one component of cocoa (monomeric catechin) that improved diabetes.

2. Cocoa is bitter and normally becomes appetizing only once you mix it with a lot of sugar. Sugar obviously increases blood sugar and compromises insulin secretion the most, which is then completely self-defeating for a diabetic to consume.

So, if you’re going to consume cocoa, try to get very dark (preferable over 90%) chocolate.

Then, combine that chocolate with other foods high in monomeric catechin, such as green tea, apples, pears, red wine, guavas, blackberries, raspberries, and cherries.

There is one ingredient that is almost single-handedly responsible for the rise in Type 2 Diabetes cases in the world.

It’s hidden in the most unlikely foods and drinks and causes your blood sugar to immediately spike out of control.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which your body becomes resistant to insulin. Since insulin is meant to regulate the amount of glucose in your blood, your glucose levels rise when your body no longer responds properly to insulin.

When you eat sugar, your liver converts it to glucose. This glucose is then available for your body to use as energy.

In a study published in a recent edition of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, scientists demonstrate how sugar, or to be more precise fructose, causes insulin resistance.

Mammals have a protein called carbohydrate-responsive element-binding protein, or simply ChREBP, in the metabolic tissue throughout their bodies.

In a study on a large group of mice, the scientists discovered that this protein is activated in the liver the moment fructose is eaten or injected.

This ChREBP then stimulates the liver to produce glucose, regardless of the amount of insulin that the pancreas produces to regulate it.

In other words, the insulin tries to regulate the amount of glucose your liver produces, but the ChREBP causes your liver to produce huge amounts of glucose, a bit like the Grimm brothers’ magic pot that kept on cooking porridge until it filled the whole house, and the whole street, and the whole town.

The pancreas then responds by making more and more insulin, a process that eventually causes the rest of the body’s metabolic tissue to become resistant to insulin.

The scientists first discovered this process in mice, and then verified it by taking autopsy samples from human livers.

Incredibly, even when they genetically modified the mice to activate their livers’ insulin signalling pathways to the maximum, thereby creating mice whose livers should not have been able to produce glucose, fructose still triggered excessive glucose production by their livers.

Interestingly, according to the research, the ChREBP triggers this process only when we eat fructose, not glucose itself.

So what contains fructose?

The only healthy forms in which to consume fructose are in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. It is healthy in these forms because it is not the main ingredient.

Fruit, vegetables, and whole grains also contain plenty of fiber that stops your body from absorbing the fructose too quickly. As a result, your liver is not drowned in huge quantities of it.

Other sweeteners like beet and cane sugar contain combinations of glucose and fructose without any fiber to slow down their absorption by your body. Even honey, which many people consider a healthy option, is packed with glucose and fructose.

Most commercial sweeteners that are added to food contain almost pure fructose, as manufacturers have discovered that pure fructose is significantly sweeter than mixed fructose and glucose.

Worst of all is added high-fructose-corn syrup.

This means that you should cut down on sodas, many commercially available fruit juices, ice cream, desserts, sandwich spreads, bottled and packaged sauces, pickled products, and a wide variety of other processed foods.

Stop the Progression of Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms – This Spice Defeats Diabetes

Once type 2 diabetes starts raising its ugly head, a vicious downward slide begins.

Traditionally, the only way to slow it down has been using strict diet changes, exercise, and losing weight. And often, even that’s not enough.

But a study published in the latest Journal of the Endocrine Society reveals a common spice that can put type 2 diabetes progression to a quick stop.

What’s more, this spice is dirt cheap and can be found in all supermarkets.

Prediabetes involves many of the same symptoms that diabetes does, including high blood glucose and glucose tolerance. But it is not as out-of-control and is still easier to treat than diabetes. For this reason, it is important to find ways to prevent prediabetes from progressing to diabetes.

To confirm or possibly disprove the findings of previous studies, researchers decided to test the effectiveness of cinnamon on prediabetes sufferers. They recruited 39 participants from the Kyung Hee University Medical Center in Seoul and another 12 from the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

All of the participants were adults with high fasting glucose, defined as between 100 and 125 mg/dL, and impaired glucose tolerance, defined as a 2-hour plasma glucose level of 140-199 mg/dL.

The subjects were divided into two groups: one that received a 500 mg capsule of cinnamon powder three times a day, and one that received a placebo consisting of a capsule with cellulose and cinnamon coloring and flavor.

The subjects took the capsules for 12 weeks and their prediabetes parameters were tested at the beginning of the study and again after six and 12 weeks.

Over the 12 weeks, fasting glucose increased by approximately five mg/dL in the placebo group but remained constant in the cinnamon treatment group.

Compared with the placebo group, the cinnamon group also displayed a smaller area under the curve for plasma glucose following the two-hour oral glucose tolerance test: 19,946 compared with 21,389 mg/dL, to be precise.

Regarding glucose tolerance, the cinnamon also did a good job. Two hours after the oral glucose tolerance test, the cinnamon group had blood glucose levels between 20 and 27 mg/dL lower than those of the placebo group, showing that glucose cleared better and faster from their blood because of the cinnamon.

There were no significant differences between the two groups after six weeks, suggesting that the effects of cinnamon probably only last while taking the supplement.

It is a pity the study did not continue for longer to see whether the benefits of the cinnamon supplements increased even further after 12 weeks of use.

Well, that may not be the right advice if researchers from Maastricht University Medical Centre are right. They published their findings in the December 2017 edition of the journal Diabetologia.

Yes, you must move, but in a very specific way.

Some medical specialists believe diseases result from a lack of vigorous exercise, while others believe diseases stem from too much sedentary time.

If the latter is the case, medical authorities can prescribe regular walking, instead of a heavy exercise routine to stay healthy.

The Dutch researchers recruited 19 patients with type 2 diabetes, gave them all the same diet, and assigned them to one of three groups:

1. A sitting group that sat for 14 hours, stood up for one hour, and leisurely walked around for one hour per day (4,415 steps.)

2. An exercise group that leisurely walked 4,823 steps, moderately to vigorously cycled 1.1 hours, and sat for the rest of the day (also approximately 14 hours.)

3. A sit less group that stood up for three hours and walked leisurely for two hours (17,502 steps) by breaking up their sitting bouts every 30 minutes.

The exercise and sit less programs were designed to burn the same number of calories.

After four days of this, the groups swapped, until all three groups had done all three programs.

While both the exercise and sit less programs reduced their average glucose levels over a 24-hour period, the sit less program was more effective at countering their resistance to insulin.

As such, the sit less program may even be better than the exercise program.

They then made a fermented berry drink with 70 percent of blackberries and 30 percent of blueberries by first fermenting the berries in low temperatures, and then replacing the alcohol with water.

They divided the diabetic mice into five groups:

– The first received pure water to drink
– The second received the diabetes drug sitagliptin.
– The other three received the fermented berry drink with three different

concentrations of anthocyanins: high, medium, and low.

They found that the mice given the fermented drinks had lower blood glucose levels than those given the water, and that they put on no weight, even while they were on a seriously unhealthy diet.

In addition, their bodies managed to deposit glucose in their muscles and organs where it was used as energy.

Finally, they showed less oxidative stress and less systemic inflammation, two of the main contributing factors not only to diabetes, but also to heart disease.

The mice that were given the fermented drink with the highest concentration anthocyanins benefited as much as those on the diabetes drug.

Unfortunately, this berry drink is not available in the shops, and fermenting berries at home will probably produce products with too much sugar to match these effects.

Mentioning alcohol-free grape wine that is already produced for diabetics, the authors recommend that wine makers use this research to produce an alcohol-free berry wine. Hopefully we’ll see more varieties on the market soon.

Type 2 diabetes is well known for causing blindness, kidney disease, and nerve damage to the legs.

But there is another common complication, one that you might not realize is caused by type 2 diabetes. But it can be even more serious than the once better understood.

A new study in the journal Bone investigated the strange connection between type 2 diabetes and bone health.

The scientific literature on the relationship between type 2 diabetes and bone health is complex. Some studies find that the bones of people with diabetes have a lower mineral density, but most studies seem to have concluded that the bone density of diabetes sufferers is actually higher.

But bone density does not necessarily mean bone strength, as this new study now advises. The authors wanted to find out whether people with diabetes were more likely than the general population was to suffer from hip and other non-vertebral fractures. They were also interested in the recovery rates of the two populations after fractures.

They searched journal databases for previously published studies on the relationship between diabetes and these fractures, finding 42 studies on hip fractures and 17 studies on non-vertebral bone fractures. Some studies investigated both types of fractures, so the total of studies analyzed was 48.

The hip fracture analysis included 319,652 fractures out of 17,571,738 participants. Altogether, people with type 2 diabetes were 33 percent more likely than the general population was to suffer hip fractures, a risk that increased to five times that of the general population for type 1 diabetes sufferers.

The non-vertebral fracture analysis included 181,228 fractures out of 2,978,487 participants. Those with type 2 diabetes were 19 percent more likely than their nondiabetic peers were to break non-vertebral bones, while type 1 diabetes sufferers had a 92 percent increased risk.

When the researchers looked at subgroups, the risk was especially high for younger diabetics than for older ones, for women than for men, for people who took insulin than for those who did not, and for people with a diabetes duration of 10 years or longer.

Even worse, the researchers found that diabetics had a higher mortality rate than healthy people had after a hip fracture and that diabetics’ average recovery rate was lower.

This analysis is concerning because hip fractures are serious. According to previous research, up to 20 percent of people who suffer hip fractures die in the first year after the event, and fewer than half of all hip fracture victims regain full function afterwards.

The authors did not know why diabetics suffered more fractures than nondiabetics did. They speculated that this trend could have had something to do with the composition or strength of their bones compared to healthy people’s bones.

Another possibility that the researchers offered is that diabetics are more likely to fall than healthy people are because of periods of low blood sugar, leg weakness, or hormonal changes.

But the solution that scientists and food manufacturers have devised for this problem is no healthier.

In fact, according to a new study out of Sweden, the ingredient you think you’re consuming, especially to manage your Type 2 Diabetes, may be exactly what is causing it.

The beverage industry produces diet drinks that contain artificial sweeteners and zero calories to avoid the negative consequences of sugar. But do these actually reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes?

Researchers analyzed the data obtained by ESTRID, an epidemiological study of risk factors for type 2 diabetes, a Swedish population-based study started in 2010.

After excluding people for whom complete information was unavailable, they were left with 1,136 people with type 2 diabetes, and 1,371 without diabetes.

From their analysis, two facts emerged:

1) Those with type 2 diabetes were more likely to drink both sugary and artificially sweetened drinks than their non-diabetic peers.

2) Sugary and artificial sweetened had the same negative effects on Type 2 Diabetes.

People who consumed more than two 200 mL sweetened (sugar or artificial) drinks per day were twice as likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes as those who drank none.

But why do artificial sweeteners cause diabetes? They don’t spike your blood sugar level.

You see, they stimulate appetite and lead you to eat more, resulting in weight gain.

In addition, previous studies have linked them with increased levels of abdominal fat, the fat most likely to be present in diabetics.

So if you suffer type 2 diabetes, it’s not enough to go for a diet cola. Simply skip the sodas altogether and opt for water, lemon or fruit-infused water (mixed at home, not bought), coconut water, nut milk, dairy milk, unsweetened coffee, or unsweetened tea.

New research from the University of Utah College of Health now explains why this might be the case. And reveals the one “hidden” type of fat that’s the underlying cause of Type 2 Diabetes.

What triggered this study was a discovery made from gastric bypass surgery patients in Singapore.

They were all obese, but those with type 2 diabetes had substantially more ceramide in their fat tissue than those without this metabolic disorder.

This made the scientists wonder whether ceramide, rather than just fat or sugar, played a role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

So what precisely is ceramide?

It is one of the main components of the outer layer of your skin and is responsible for preventing excessive water loss through your skin and for blocking the entry of bacteria and viruses. You may also notice it as an ingredient in some of your cosmetic products.

It is one of the main ingredients in your cell membranes and keeps your cells structurally together.

Without it, you would be dead. But the new research from Utah now suggests that, with too much of it, you are in serious health trouble too.

They published the results of their investigations in the November 2016 edition of the journal Cell Metabolism.

When you eat a lot, your body stores the food as fat or burns it for energy when you need it. But some people’s bodies unfortunately convert it to ceramide, and that is the process the Utah scientists decided to study.

They first added excess ceramide to the fat cells of humans and mice in the laboratory. These fat cells immediately became unresponsive to insulin and resistant to fat burning for energy.

When they added excess ceramide to the fat cells of mice and implanted them in the mice, a large number of the animals developed diabetes and/or fatty liver disease.

Remember that one of the first signs and main symptoms of diabetes is insulin resistance. But ceramide in your cells makes them unresponsive to insulin so they cannot accept glucose.

To confirm their theory, the researchers worked out the pathway whereby mice converted saturated fat to ceramide. They genetically engineered the mice and deleted the gene responsible for this conversion.

These mice then became resistant to diabetes.

The researchers hope that, with time, medical science can develop away to delete this ceramide conversion gene in humans too, to prevent insulin resistance and diabetes from developing.

There are not many strategies you can adopt to prevent your body from converting fats to ceramide, but the one that is available to you is big.

In a literature review in a 2008 edition of the journal Atherosclerosis, researchers found that large amounts of ceramide are produced in bodies high in reactive oxygen species.

These reactive oxygen species are what we commonly call free radicals.

Therefore, to prevent some of the conversion of fat to ceramide, simply eat plenty of antioxidants like fruits and vegetables that contain vitamins C and E, dark-colored grapes for resveratrol, capers and onions for quercetin, cucumber and artichoke for salicylic acid, and green tea for catechins.

This is no surprise to me. For years I have preached that the main cause of Type 2 Diabetes is oxidization and even more its brother, inflammation.

Blood Sugar Spike What to Do – This “No-No Food” Heals Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome

This food was considered very healthy.

Then it was put on the no-no list and was pitched as the cause of almost all modern diseases.

Lately, however, this food is experiencing something of a comeback in the scientific community.

And a new study in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care contributes to this debate by revealing that it can prevent type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome.

Previous studies had already linked this come-back food, dairy, and reduced risk of metabolic diseases, but the authors of the new study thought that these were too focused on people in North America and Europe.

As a result, they thought they would collect information already obtained by the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study, which includes people from Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, India, Iran, Malaysia, Palestine, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, the UAE, and Zimbabwe. The subjects were all between 35 and 70 years old and they were followed for approximately 9.1 years.

Complete medical information to diagnose metabolic syndrome was available for 112,922 people, who served as the subjects in the investigation of the relationship between dairy intake and metabolic syndrome.

The researchers also investigated the relationship between dairy intake and type 2 diabetes in 131,481 people who were free of this metabolic disorder at the beginning of the study.

They lastly analyzed the association between dairy intake and hypertension in 57,547 people whose blood pressure was also approximately normal at the beginning.

These were their findings:

1. People who consumed two daily servings of dairy were 24% less likely than people who consumed no dairy to have metabolic syndrome. Those who consumed full-fat dairy were 28% less likely to have metabolic syndrome, meaning that full-fat dairy is better than low-fat dairy.

2. Low-fat dairy consumed alone was not associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome, but people who mixed low fat and full-fat dairy had an 11% smaller risk than those who consumed no dairy.

3. Compared with people who consumed no dairy, those who consumed two daily servings had a 12% smaller risk of developing diabetes. Once again, full-fat dairy was healthier.

4. Compared with people who consumed no dairy, those who consumed at least two servings per day had an 11% smaller risk of high blood pressure, with full-fat dairy being healthier.

5. For all conditions, three daily dairy servings were healthier than two were.

They defined low-fat dairy as products containing one to two percent fat, and their analysis included milk, cheese, yogurt, yogurt drinks, and dishes that contained dairy products. Butter and cream were analyzed separately, as they were not widely consumed in some of the analyzed countries.

It is worth remembering that pouring three glasses of milk down your throat after consuming four slices of white bread is not going to save you from diabetes.

The conclusion simply means that, between two people who both eat four slices of white bread, the one who also drinks the milk will have a lower risk of diabetes, but not necessarily a low risk.

Therefore, so long as you don’t use this as an excuse for an unhealthy diet, at least two servings of dairy per day can be healthy.

But drinking full-fat milk is not going to cure type 2 diabetes; to do that, you need to follow the three easy steps explained here…

Their medical records included their HBA1c levels as a measurement of the severity of their diabetes and infrared eyelid photos to examine their tear glands.

On average, each diabetic patient had lost 51.54 percent of their tear glands, while the nondiabetic control patients had lost 11.29 percent each.

People with poorly controlled diabetes, as indicated by high HBA1c levels, exhibited a larger loss in tear glands than those whose conditions were better controlled.

The researchers found that 35 of the 37 patients with HbA1c scores higher than 6.6 percent had lost more than 40 percent of their tear glands, while only 12 of 23 patients with HbA1c scores lower than 6.6 percent had done so.

The role of high or low blood sugar could also be seen in the nondiabetic subjects.

The researchers found that 41 out of 50 nondiabetic subjects with HBA1c levels lower than 5.5 percent had almost no loss of tear glands. However, 7 of the 10 nondiabetic subjects with HBA1c levels higher than 5.6 percent had significant loss of tear glands.

Dry eyes are, of course, not a sure-fire way to diagnose diabetes. However, they indicate that a doctor’s visit is needed to check for the condition before it becomes full-blown diabetes.

Moreover, because most smartphones can take pretty good pictures of your eyelids, you may be able to see the lack of tear glands yourself, which can help you decide whether to seek advice for the treatment of diabetes.

The higher the statin dose, the higher the risk – those on the highest doses were more than 50% as likely to develop diabetes.

Doctors were found to start patients on low doses and moved them to high doses over time.

This is not the first time medical scientists have issued this warning. The Queensland study was on women, but men are equally at risk; evidenced by a Finnish research on middle age men, published in the journal Diabetologia.

The growing body of evidence worldwide suggests statins are not a magic bullet for cholesterol. They are dangerous drugs that exacerbates an already epidemic-level diabetes problem.
